<Caution - this review contains spoilers>
Firstly, to everyone who suggested I read this series, thank you.
I was sceptical about it at first since I'm not really one to really like fae-stories. Up until I finished this series, my idea of fae was basically Tinkerbell and similar things. This, of course made me think that ACOTAR wasn't a series I would enjoy.
I was wrong.
The world is so vibrant and beautifully described, with believable characters I feel I can talk to if they were real. The plot (especially ACOMAF and ACOWAR) had me left in awe, the twists were mind-blowing, and I really didn't see them coming.
For ACOTAR - I started it thinking in the later chapters it was a Beauty and The Beast retelling, with Tamlin's beast form and so on. But the last 3rd of the book had me so hooked and invested I couldn't put it down. I finished around 2 am on a Saturday night and immediately started ACOMAF afterwards. I loved the way Tamlin and Lucien was written, Feyre started out to me as a usual-female lead, but then grew into an unstoppable force that brought hope back to Prythian. When reading the rest of the series, you can see how many of the events of ACOTAR was a catalyst for Feyre to discover her true self, and even set into her role as High Lady.
ACOMAF was amazing. The shift that happened from backing Tamlin and loving him to seeing the truth behind him and seeing the truth behind Rhysand. Sarah J Maas captured the true meaning of "rose coloured glasses" where Tamlin, in book one, was the beautiful caring man and turned into a horrible, possessive beast once everything was over. I know a few relationships that were like that, and that added to the personal realism I felt. Chapters 55 and 54 were beautifully written, I don't often cry but Rhysand baring it all to her, really touched some nerve. The found family theme came through strong here. The ending of the book, of course had me cussing at Tamlin for a good hour.
ACOWAR was unlike the first two books. We learned more about Prythians politics and got to see more of the other courts and their High Lords. I loved the political aspect, it for me added a sense of reality to the story, where war isn't simply about fighting and armies, but also about building alliances with unlikely friends. Elain's pain and sorrow were so beautifully written, I truly felt sorry for her. Then with chapter 76 and 77... The most heart-breaking thing I've ever read. Tamlin did redeem himself a little in the novel, however he still gave off "I'll get her back" vibes - which we know won't happen. I loved the battle strategies and the vivid descriptions of the battle scenes; however, they were nothing as vivid as for example in Game OF Thrones, but I enjoyed it, nonetheless.
I didn't really enjoy ACOFAS - it felt like a filler. I finished it in a day, and I felt like it didn't add much to the story. There were some interesting parts, and fun bits but overall, I thought it could've been absorbed into ACOSF, with ACOSF being split at part 2.
ACOSF, I enjoyed reading from Nesta and Cassian's point of view. Cassian's role within the Night Court is explored more as well as his relationship with Rhys. Nesta and Cassian’s relationship is also a rough one at first, but when they finally give into their feelings, it was beautiful. Her character development was also done well, I went from hating her to understanding and eventually liking her. Elain also growing into her own role and finding her own bold nature was refreshing. However, in this book, I didn't really like the "spice" - I don't read books for the spice of it - but the last few spicey scenes had me feeling quite queasy. To each their own, but definitely not for me. I also felt, at the end of the book with Cassian being forced to do the old crone's bidding, that there should've been more internal conflict, I would've liked to see more from his perspective.
All and all Sarah J Maas solidifies her stance as Queen of Fantasy amongst the others, she's completely in control of her narrative and knows where she wants her characters to go.
ACOTAR - 4 stars
ACOMAF - 5 stars
ACOWAR - 5 stars
ACOFAS - 3 stars
ACOSF - 4 stars
Red & Blue
Red and blue, contrasting as always but never with you.
Fiery beauty, the crimson goddess swaying to the beat of the drums. Flames dancing around you, guided by your commands. The moments drew me in, further that I’d like to admit. But where someone isn’t watching, I knew you were it.
The cold is all I have, yet I can feel your heat thawing me out. Every move, every sway, every playful glance, you draw me in and keep me focused. Red has always been your colour, but blue never mine. I’ll always be six feet from you, no matter how close you get. I didn't want to fall in love, I didn't want to dream of you. But here I am, and there are you.
It's a foolish thing, desire and passion. You can have one but never the other.
She is the queen of fire, seductress of flames, The lady in red. Beauty unmatched, spirit unbroken.
What can a river do, other than watch her dance by herself from a distance. Never shall water and fire meet.
What a wicked game, to love fire from afar.
I can't believe that my favorite series, Shadow and Bone, is 10 years old this year! It felt like yesterday when I bought Shadow and Bone from the bargain bin at Bargain Books when I was 16! I finished the series at the ripe old age of 18 after finding a copy of Ruin and Rising in a bookstore in Stavanger, Norway. Ten years later, these three books are among my pride-and-joy, including my collector's editions of the Six Of Crows Duology and beautiful hardbacks of the King Of Scars Duology. I'm a proud heartrender and would always be grateful to @lbardugo for writing these books since they were my inspiration for my own novel. . . . . #booksbooksbooks #fantasybooks #bookaesthetic #bookobsessed #bookblog #booksofig #yabooks #bookishpost #yafantasy #booksofinsta #sixofcrows #bookdragon #thedarkling #ya #leighbardugo #booktube #bookishfeatures #grishaverse #prettybooks #booktography #yabookstagram #yalit #mybookfeatures #bibliophilelife https://www.instagram.com/p/CedVJ-bjb4a/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Explore
Exploring the world is freedom nothing can recreate.
Sailing on the ocean, the realm of Poseidon, listening to the splash of the waves against the boat’s bow, is a part of paradise no island can give.
Watching whales and dolphins swim and play, subtly wishing I could join. The faint bump of a shark fin brings back the slight fear that Jaws brought to the shore, in countless movies. The ocean is deep, and no one knows what lies within the darkness. Those of us lucky enough to escape the grasp and slowly fade into the light have tales to tell, but nothing to believe. Slowly, we wish for that darkness again, shunned by the world of our kin.
I’m not a surface dweller, nor am I a siren. I’m part of a much older, much better superstition. Not everyone knows about us, we’ve been turned into a tale to amuse the surface dwellers, like the heroes Odysseus and Achilles.
The tales are old, but on this boat time does not know, for the sea nymph I used to be, and for the sea nymph I wish to be again.
Summer Memories.
Sitting in a lifeless pool, dreaming of the sun, of the summer, we would walk around the beach, alone together with our hands entwined.
The hot summer sun cascading down on us from the cerulean blue sky, warming our skin and lighting our hearts ablaze as the cold ocean kissed our toes and caressed our bodies. Spending time on our favourite hidden part of the beach will always be my favourite memory. How we created a paradise between the crashing waves and slippery rocks.
The summer seemed to last forever, hot days and humid nights, cuddled up in our hammock, listening to the ocean sounds. But just as summer, seasons change. The warm winds turned cold and the sun’s warm rays became colder. Winter crept up on us, and we weren’t ready.
Summer took the ocean away from us, leaving only memories as we settled back in our cold reality of close knit offices and pale grey skies. By day we work and by night we reminisce about the days that we felt like sirens on the seashore, with nothing but the waves calling and crashing around us.
The Femme Fatale
“Who is she?” is the question everyone asks as soon as she enters the dark and dimly lit bar.
Discussions turn to whispers; “Ballerina,” someone mutters, “seductress,” another whispers. From the dark corner, a man guised as a drunk curses under his breath while swirling the amber liquid in his glass. “Ballerina,” he scoffs.
One cannot compare the innocence of a butterfly to the murder of a crow. The grace and poise of a ballerina to that of a goat. But as her red lips grace the rim of a martini glass, and the cigar smoke filled the air, his mind wandered to her, dancing around the curse of her curves. The slight edge of a bee tattoo stuck out from the low hanging waist of her dress.
He remembered. He remembered it all. Her apartment in Belarus, the bee tattoo, how she stole secrets from him that only the agency knew. He heard her voice echoing in his mind, sweet and sensual, but he wished he could forget. She had made him lose it all. With a simple phrase “loose lips are a spy's best friend.”
Dangerous and seductively beautiful, was the femme fatale.
#qotd What was your favourite April read? We're heading into uni exam season so I've placed my latest read, A Court of Thorns and Roses a bit on the back burner. I'll be back soon at the end of May, but with a big special giveaway, so all the ACOTAR fans, stay tuned! I had the absolute pleasure of meeting @author.bernicefischer today at the #randshow2022 while visiting family. We had an amazing chat that inspired me to break my slump and finish chapter two! Her fantasy series is currently at three books - fourth one in progress, and as you can see, I've already got the first one! I haven't started reading it yet, but from the synopsis at the back I'm super intrigued in the concept of the "Dream Catcher" idea she brought forth in this series. I'll definitely have some updates about this book in my next posts, but for now happy reading! . . . . . #books #book #booklover #reading #bookstagrammer #bookworm #bookish #readersofinstagram #bookaddict #booknerd #bookreview #bookrecommendations #booksofinstagram #bibliophile #author #read #booksbooksbooks #bookshelf #instabook #bookcommunity #bookblogger #bookphotography #bookaholic #reader #booklove #southafricanauthor #booklovers #indieauthor https://www.instagram.com/p/CcYST2srBUE/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Resources for the experienced or aspiring writer.
There are millions of resources available on the internet. Some of them are brilliant and some will just take up your time with unnecessary spam.
Eight years ago, when I decided I wanted to be an author and proclaimed myself a writer, knowing nothing more than what I learned in high school, I took to the internet and enjoyed the rabbit hole of tips, tricks, and methods.
Sooner other than later, the resources started contradicting each other and confusion happened. Looking back at my first book I wrote, I am glad I never tried publishing it.
So, before anyone falls into the confusion I did, here are some great resources for writing and everything else in between.
ProWritingAid.
The absolute best grammar checker out there. Don’t get me wrong, Grammarly is great, but ProWritingAid is just on another level. The extension offers so much! From core elements like grammar and style to structure, readability and consistency - it’s bound to make your writing concise, easy to read and a dream for your editor to review. It also comes with a bunch of options of writing, from business to creative and more. You can check it out here. An optional extra is an online editor called Hemingway. It helps you cut down sentences, minimize adverb usage and more.
Milanote.
Milanote is a killer app perfect for any writer.
If you ever feel like you’re lost in your story or don’t really know where to collate all your concept art, Pinterest boards into a single place with character descriptions and more, look to Milanote.
You can lay out your story, make sure your story line is still on track, create mood boards and character maps and keep it all in one app. You can even invite contributors and add your research files. When you’re starting out your novel, it’s great, it keeps your kind of on track. Milanote is also free btw, but if you need more boards, it will need a subscription. But they have these referral programs that get you extra boards, so that’s dope. Check Milanote out here.
Lexico
It is extremely important to have a dictionary and thesaurus on hand when you write. There are many free ones, but personally I placed my trust in the Oxford Dictionary. Lexico, therefore, is a great site to use since it is powered by Oxford. It has a great grammar guide if you are not sure about the correct hyphen usage etc. and has an option ongoing into the etymology of a word. Should you happen to have Spanish in your story, it has a handy Spanish dictionary too.
Besides the grammar guide and Spanish Dictionary, Lexico offers the powers of a Thesaurus, and the option to choose between a UK and US dictionary (which is handy if you’re new to writing and your high school English education was atrocious.)
Some books to consult:
I mostly spend my days in bookstores looking for classic literary works that I don’t own and to look at the literary reference isle. On two occasions, I am absolutely amazed by the gems I found. The first one was “The Right Word: A Writer's Toolkit of Grammar, Vocabulary and Literary Terms” by Bloomsbury. This book not only has a grammar toolkit which is helpful to an extent, but the Vocabulary Builder and Glossary of Literary terms are brilliant. They show you commonly misused words and phrases, the difference between synonyms, or similar sounding words, so you do not use the wrong one. It really is a writer’s toolkit. I would recommend looking at it, you can always grow your vocab more!
The second one is “The Poets & Writers Complete Guide to Being a Writer.”
So far, this book is insightful on many accounts. I am currently reading it. It offers so many insightful pieces from how to market yourself to publishing your work traditionally or via self-publishing. Questions, answers, insight and more await you in this book. I will write a full summary as soon as I am done reading my copy.
Finally, do consult the Poets & Writers website, Reedsy, the Writers & Artists website or just speak to fellow writers. Writing is a skill that takes time to hone.
I hope this helps you on your writing journey!
The Song of Eirene
During the twilight hours in a small fishing village, a mysterious woman was found in the surf. It was the gossip of the town about how she barely missed the rocks and survived the terrible storm. Everyone was surprised when the wealthy fishing merchant had taken her in. His generosity spread through the village and soon the village honoured him with small gifts of praise. The gifts changed from sugar cookies to the finest wine and ales from the brewhouse. Her beauty soon became known in the village. Her sea-green eyes and long raven coloured hair stood out from the crowd of pale greys and dusty greens. The fishing merchant saw an opportunity and started to take her along to the city, hoping she would capture the eye of some wealthy merchant looking to buy the most beautiful woman in the land.
The fishing merchant dressed her in expensive silks in different hues of blue, but the woman did not want to be paraded as a prize through the streets of the city. This went on for weeks until a storm took hold of the village and destroyed the fishing merchant's fleet. The woman was never to be seen again, but legend says that Eirene, daughter of Poseidon, was sent to teach the fishing merchant that greed would be the downfall of any man. Today she’s honoured by the village of Eirene, and during some storms we can see her on the rocks, dancing in the surf.
Lazy Sundays
Slowly the sun rises, waking up the world. Birds sing their songs while most of those who wake cook breakfast, brush teeth and go about their morning routine. Not everyone follows this regime. This day is meant to be a slow one for her.
There is no movement, no sound but her soft breathing. The yellow light flows through a crack in the curtains, falling down on her silhouette covered by the pastel green coloured comforter. She turns around, eyes slowly fluttering open in the yellow glow. She glances at the clock on her wall. It's 10 am. She succeeded in laying in, dosing in a dreamland of wonders that only exist in her slow world.
She gets out of her bed and extends her arms above her into a graceful stretch, the kind that makes the sun want to fall into the curvature of her waist and orbit her forever. In her world, she is her own sun, and the outside world is just another planet orbiting her. Here she is herself, safely going about the day with no rush. Trading the big city for the peace and quiet of a small cottage far from any noise, any form of rush.
This is her peace, waking up slowly on a Sunday morning.
Aphrodite's Visit
I remember the day better than any other, the day roses started blooming and never stopped.
The skies were lined with gold and silver as Helios’ chariot brought the dawn. It was the height of spring, flowers in full bloom, and the fields in the deepest shade of green. The townsfolk went about their day until the brewing of a thunderstorm sent them all to their homes. The storm was terrifying. Lightning struck the earth, leaving black scars and burnt grass, the sound echoing through the world. Hours passed, but the aftermath was something much more frightening than the storm itself.
In the middle of the field, not too far from the village’s entrance, a woman with long, golden silk-like hair watched the storm pass. Not a drop of water had touched her porcelain skin, nor was she burned or bruised in any form. “Miss! Are you hurt?” a young boy called from the road. The woman turned to face the crowd that had slowly formed behind him, stirring the curiosity of the crowd. Her piercing, sky-blue eyes fixated on the boy. “Of course!” she spoke with a voice like a soft breeze on a warm summer's day. Her beauty was unmatched, a woman made from honey and glass, a goddess in the purest of forms. The storm brought a bloom of multicoloured roses growing from thatch roofs and the unlikeliest of places. From that day, no rose ever died, and the townspeople would forever tell the story of Aphrodite's visit.
A little bit of green has a great effect on happiness.
