The Frame ¡ Zurich 2024
from Summer Places by Brendan Gill and Dudley Witney (1978)
I feel like advertising is probably the funniest place anyone can choose to predicate their moral arguments against AI on the basis of environmental impact because like. The advertising industry is already probably the most wasteful i dustry in terms of environmental costs vs. actual value it provides, to the point that adding AI to it amounts to a very small drop in the world's biggest bucket. Like.
"Using AI to design flyers looks cheap and tacky" đ I completely agree.
"Using AI to design flyers is bad for the environment" I can tell you with 100% absolute certainty that the environmental impact of printing hundreds of paper flyers which will be looked at exactly once and then thrown in the garbage is like. Several orders of magnitude bigger than the environmental impact of generating the picture that will go on said flyers.
Like I find it hard to think of a position that more succinctly communicates "I never think about where anything comes from or how it's produced or how it's disposed of or the environmental costs of any steps in that process unless there's some sort of moral panic telling me to be concerned about it" than thinking that the "AI" part of "ads made with AI" is the part that's bad for the environment.
the thing is threatening to institutionalize suicidal people doesn't actually scare them out of being suicidal it just means they don't tell anyone when they are getting close
it's not great that every nation in the world seems to believe that if they kill enough civilians, the enemy will give up, even though the deaths of their own civilians would simply make them fight harder
sometimes people experiencing psychosis and/or mania will come up to you on the street and talk in confusing or upsetting ways. your job is to either have a regular human-to-human conversation with that person or politely leave. your job is not to call 911. do not call 911. you might kill that person if you call 911.
I don't even have the energy to screenshot and respond to your tags- what the actual fuck is wrong with you? "the cops are scared and rightfully so" "mental health calls are the scariest for cops" OH so this isn't about the safety of psychotic & manic people this is about piggy feelings?
and no, actually, this is not USA specific and no, actually, people from other countries should not ignore this post. police violence and sanism weren't invented in the US and they are certainly not unique to here. if you (or anyone) thinks that this bullshit doesn't happen elsewhere then you are not listening.
Someome having an episode is a medical emergency, not a crime in progress; it should be handled by medical personnel and not cops.
some of us live in constant psychosis or have long term or frequent manic episodes. medical emergencies are acute problems, not chronic baseline states. the majority of people with a psychotic disorder experience psychosis regularly. for most psychotic people a psychotic episode is not a medical emergency it is an average Tuesday.
don't call an ambulance on someone who does not want one.
a psychotic episode is not inherently an emergency
CONNIE PANZARINO at a pride march in Boston circa 1990
[ID: Connie is marching along in her sip 'n' puff (SNP) wheelchair. She is wearing a patterned poncho and sporting a green felt party crown on her head. She styles a pair of wire-rimmed glasses with her slicked back hair. She is smiling. Attached to the back of her wheelchair is a large green cardboard poster that reads "Trached Dykes Eat Pussy Without Comin' Up For Air!" followed by a pink upside-down triangle with a stick figure person in a wheelchair at the centre (a symbol for disabled women)].
the cyborg & the crip by Alison Kafer
[ID: âTrached dykes eat pussy without coming up for air.â Connie Panzarino, a longtime disability activist and out lesbian, would attach this sign to her wheelchair during Pride marches in Boston in the early 1990s. Shockingly explicit, her sign refuses to cast technology as cold, distancing, or disembodied/disembodying, presenting it instead as a source and site of embodied pleasure. âTrachâ is an abbreviation of tracheotomy, a medical procedure in which a breathing tube is inserted directly into the trachea, bypassing the mouth and nose. Someone with a trach, then, can, in effect, breathe through her throat, freeing her mouth for other activities (another version of this sign is âTrached dykes french kiss without coming up for airâ). From a cyborgian perspective, this sign is brilliantly provocative and productive. It draws on the pervasive idea that adaptive technologies grant superior abilities, not merely replacing a lost capacity but enhancing it, yet it does so in a highly subversive way. The message here isnât about blending in, about passing as normal or hypernormal, but about publicly announcing the viability of a queer disabled location. Itâs disnormalizing, adamantly refusing compulsory heterosexuality, compulsory able bodiedness, and homonormativity. As Corbett OâToole argues, it challenges the perceived passivity of disabled women, presenting them as actively pleasuring their partners, thereby graphically refuting stereotypes linking physical disability with nonsexuality.]
i know iâm just in a bad mood but this push to re-categorize every kind or moral human action as inherently punk and cool is fucking cringe because youâre showing your ass about your priorities. as a visibly alt queer myself, who gives a FUCK if being nice is âpunkâ? just be nice because itâs nice. iâm not giving you special scene brownie points for it?? and you donât even listen to punk music or care about the history? so why do you care about being âpunkâ?? IM GOING CRAZY
while im reiterating posts, letâs touch this one!
so, so many well-meaning people going âwell, if feeling punk is what makes people be nice and do nice things, let them say theyâre punk!â to which, yeah, i canât stop them
my objection isn't "being nice isn't punk, therefore don't be niceâ
my objection is that we've reached a point where every positive human behavior gets reframed as an aesthetic identity instead of just being a positive human behavior
if you think helping people is good, then help people because it's good!
if you think kindness is good, be kind because it's good!
i don't understand the need to run every moral action through a "but is it punk?" filter first, especially when a lot of the people doing this have no actual interest in punk as a culture, music scene, history, or political tradition (for better or for worse)
at a certain point "punk" just becomes shorthand for "thing i personally approve of," and then the word stops meaning anything at all
ANYWAY! hereâs some punk bands you could check out if youâre interested in punk music that might reflect the values you hold dear but youâre not sure where to start: Against Me!, Crass, The Dicks, MDC, X-Ray Spex, The Muslims, G.L.O.S.S., Big Joanie, Los Crudos, Pansy Division! give them a try! happy thrashing!
but do you play shorter games with worse graphics made by people who are paid more to work less đ¤¨
the thing about "I want shorter games with worse graphics made by people who are paid more to work less and I'm not kidding" is that these games exist and are out there and you have to make the conscious choice to seek them out instead of just expecting the big companies to deliver this, because they will not
everyone get more pretentious in 2026. especially if youâve been taught and coached societally to be silent. i am being so fucking serious abt this. i have never been more serious abt anything in my life.
there are a hundreds people out there who have never been taught shame, who will place themselves on a pedestal in front of millions and spout bullshit they donât even think TWICE about. they are NOT going to hog, of all things, the simple pleasure of pretentiousness. they canât even be pretentious and right. I can be pretentious and right.

I think overall there will probably be devastating long term effects on the movie industry from a horror movie based on a youtube video based on a 4chan post making 7 times it's budget on opening weekend but I think the movie itself is probably preddy good
what studios are going to take away from this, unfortunately, is not that building practical sets instead of green screen stages and taking a risk on a 20 year old first time director can sometimes pay off and elevate a really thin script into something more substantial. they are going to start asking themselves how do we make a movie out of that one post that says notice how there was no wednesday this week
