Can you remember the 90s?
Yes
No
As in, do any of your memories take place during the 90s (yes, a single memory from 1999 counts).
I can remember about half of them. My earliest memory was probably 1995 and they go from there.

“Snow White? That’s her name? Even I think that’s precious, and mine’s Tinkerbell.”
I’m 38 on Thursday and I still don’t know what to make of my life.
Ok now I've had a bit longer to think, here's a slightly more detailed 'first thoughts' on The Vampire Lestat first episode.
It wasn't what i expected... but I'm glad to be wrong. Ok, I knew the tone shift was happening, the narration, Rolin Jones' quippy dialogue being cranked up to 11 - but I thought we would start exploring Lestat's backstory via flashbacks in the first episode. Not full-on Interview-style linear flashbacks but I kept waiting for and dreading something like the Magnus stuff. But that isn't what happened. But that's not a complaint! I think having us wait a bit longer, only teasing us with trauma-induced quick-cut flashback montages was such a great idea.
I also think that, even though the timeline is all over the place (and it is just so nice to watch a show with an intentionally messy timeline and actually have that be the point!) this episode does a fantastic job at establishing Lestat's emotional state of mind. And that state of mind is... well, he's not doing well. At all.
And that's basically how the book starts too! "Oh hey there, I'm the Vampire Lestat, here's how I describe myself, oh and by the way, I'm a rockstar now!" - so I think the show throwing us straight into this rockstar storyline (sans that opening auction scene), going back and forth between times and feeding us little pieces of context was the perfect way to start this season.
So, in summary, I'm glad we did have this flashback-less episode to properly set-up where this story is going in this season. Lestat is a rockstar now, it's already been a chaotic mess, and now that his traumatic past keeps getting brought up, it's about to get a lot messier.
Again, bravo, Rolin and co.!
I quite enjoyed it.
Very different in tone from Interview but that makes sense since this is Lestat’s POV. There were so many things thrown at you all at once and in different time periods, aspect ratios.. it was a lot to take in! (although I also agree that I liked that they did this, shows the writers trust their fanbase and audience.)
I'm glad to hear that! :)
Oh yeah, they absolutely trust us. One thing that is so great about showrunner Rolin Jones is that he has a clear plan, he will not pander to any aspect of the fandom to deviate from that plan (good on him for listening to his actors, though! I mean, they do have to compromise at times, but he also takes their words into consideration and adjusts when needed) but with that plan, he trusts us to follow along with it. So it is very much his show, but he's not a "I don't give a shit about the audience" showrunner. He's like "ok guys, we're making this change, but we hope you stay with us on this. Because we are still making this for you. We're just doing our plan."
You might need to answer our questions. My sister was asking a lot and I was like I don’t know we need Emma here with us. :P :)
