My mom is a fourth grade teacher, and I’ll never forget after ‘Encanto’ came out, she said all of her students were obsessed with Bruno.

Drawing him, talking about him— they were just drawn to and absolutely loved Bruno! And given the context of the story I think that is actually really important and beyond precious.

When watching ‘Encanto’, I think every viewer receives a gift which is singing the parts of every member of the Madrigal family at once when We Don’t Talk About Bruno comes on.

When I was little, I quite literally couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that Nani was Lilo’s sister and not her mom— my mom had to correct me. And honestly I think that speaks volumes.

One of my favorite small details about ‘Brave’ is that the, well, brave and adventurous heroine, feels fear. We see Merida scared as a little kid, we see her feel fear on her adventure when she’s older— for example when she is quite literally about to be mauled by a giant bear (understandable).

This is so important to me. The fact Merida feels fear doesn’t negate her spirit and bravery. She’s human. As it is often said, bravery isn’t the lack of fear, but the perseverance through it.

When I was little, I used to have such an intense emotional, visceral reaction of anger to the scene where Triton destroys Ariel’s grotto it was almost physical. Now that I’m older and have both lived as a a neurodivergent individual and been diagnosed, I recognize that it was because Triton was destroying Ariel’s hyperfixation interest, the main thing that brought her comfort when she felt uncomfortable and didn’t belong.
