Because I know I saw the pattern on a vintage site and it's driving me nuts tbh :D
My bio parents are both middle children, and relatively speaking, they got off to a late start having kids. When I was born, I was the youngest cousin on both sides by about ten years. One of my grandmas had a dedicated playroom: most of the toys I remember in there have since proven to be 70s and 80s icons. I'm a 90s icon myself; QED.
Anyway, one of these was a handmade turtle rattle, and I'd swear I saw the pattern for it in a 70s (I think) Women's Day. As a somewhat seasoned connoisseur of crochet designs, it could not possibly have been more timestamped. Recycling was in and so was crunchy living: you began with a cleaned-out margarine tub (no, seriously) and filled it with dried beans. From there, you crocheted a cover for it and added stuffed limbs and a head and there you had it. Not machine washable but soft and teething-proof.
In the meantime I've gained a nephew and have been gnawing on this concept for a while. This started off as a bucket hat but I think this is the better use of the pattern:
My cat says this one is hers (possibly because that used to be a jar of bouillon). I'll add better photos when I remake his.
I'll tell you where you can cheat, but as pictured, you need:
a plastic jar or container with a lid
scant amounts of 4 ply yarn in 4 different colors of your choice
a G hook or a size that will get your gauge as tight as possible
this kandi pattern to follow for intarsia section
Wash and dry your jar. Fill it with the beads.
With the color you would like for the background behind the alien, create a circle that will tightly fit the butt end of the jar. As pictured, this is:
Round 1: ch 2, hdc 6 in 2nd ch from hook, join
Round 2: 2hdc in each hdc around (12 hdc).
Round 3: hdc in each (2hdc) space, 2hdc in each (hdc) around (18 hdc).
Round 4: (Hdc into 2hdc space, hdc 2 times) around (24 hdc).
Round 5: (Hdc into 2hdc space, hdc 3 times) around (30 hdc).
Continue to fphdc, referring to the attached link for intarsia pattern, the 3rd through the 14th lines. I did not include the white outline or the "glass"'. Attach and carry extra colors as they appear - they should not be visible behind this stitch. Center your alien head as best you can. As pictured, that first row is
Round 8: Fphdc 13 times (do not cut), join green, fpdhc 3 times (do not cut), rejoin blue, fphdc around.
Continue until you've added the alien's hands. Detach all colors at the end of this row.
Round 20: Join the color you'd like for the saucer part of the ship. Fphdc around.
Round 22: continue expanding your original circle as wide as you'd like. Pick up right where you left off. As pictured: (2hdc, hdc 4 times) around (36 hdc).
Round 23: (Hdc into 2 hdc space, hdc 5 times) around (42 hdc).
Round 24: (Hdc into 2 hdc space, hdc 6 times) around (48 hdc).
Round 25: (Hdc into 2 hdc space, hdc 7 times) around (54 hdc). Sl into next st and fasten off. Fit snugly over jar.
Cast on a second piece in the saucer color. Repeat rounds 1-7, then continue to expand to 7 hdc as in round 22-25. Sl into final hdc, do not detach.
Sl st bottom circle to the finished top piece. Weave in ends.
Visual for the circle. Man but that was hard to write without a reference:
