How To Survive Being Overwhelmed: A Guide

We all have those weeks where we look at our planner and think, “Four exams, two papers, and three group presentations?! That’s gonna be the worst week of my life.” Before you start panicking, remember that everyone has these weeks and we all survive them. Here are a few tricks I’ve learned to prepare for workload-heavy weeks.

1. Start preparing early. No, seriously. Make a study schedule for the week BEFORE your week from hell, so that you’re actually prepared for it. If you review material for an exam the week before and feel comfortable with it, you won’t need to cram for your exam. Block out half an hour/an hour at a time to work on each thing you have to study so that you’ve made progress on everything.

2. Finish assignments that take the least time FIRST. If you have a 3 page paper due the night before you have two exams, don’t wait until right before the deadline to submit it, or you’ll be losing valuable review time. Finish that paper the weekend before and submit it early so that it’s off your plate. Prioritize your work and finish anything quick in advance so you won’t forget about it or be scrambling to do it at the last minute.

3. Test yourself on material. When you’re short on time for studying and torn between multiple subjects, remember that one of the most effective ways to study is by testing yourself. Make flashcards, do a practice exam, or just have a friend quiz you on the reading. This is a great way to study when you can’t devote as much time as you want to each subject!

4. Don’t forget to take care of yourself. It can be tempting during a busy week to blow off all your workouts and take shortcuts in your self-care, but don’t give in. No matter how much you have to do, remember that YOU should always be your number one priority, and no one can study every second of every day. Remember to take time for yourself.

5. Use the resources you have available. Go to your library and ask a librarian for help if you’re doing research, go to your professor’s office hours and ask for help with a tricky assignment, ask your TA questions, go to a help room if it’s available. If you can, try to make a study group with other people in your class as well, and have them explain to you concepts you don’t understand.

Despite having studied Latin and Greek for years, I always find linguistic terminology, which is  mostly derived from Classical languages, really hard to understand. Bizarrely, seeing the Korean version, which is derived from Chinese, actually helps understand the English!
