On This Day In History
On January 5, 1941, Hayao Miyazaki was born. He is the creative force behind many notable masterpieces such as Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke and many, many others. Many regard him as one of the greatest animation directors in history.
Today, he turns 78 years old.
Happy Birthday to such a creative genius!

On January 1, 1963, Astro Boy premiered in Japan for the first time. Astro Boy was created by Osamu Tezuka who is known as the “father of manga and anime” and known for his pioneering techniques, his abundant creative drive and output, and for redefining a number of genres in Japan. Astro Boy is his most famous work.

On December 18, 1984, The Adventures of André and Wally B was released to the public. This would be the first CGI-animated film in history. Although it wouldn’t bring any form of popular success, this film would lay the foundation from which Toy Story and Pixar animations would be built.
Congratulations, André and Wally B! You won’t be forgotten!

On December 17, 1989, The Simpsons aired on Fox. The Simpsons would go down in history as the longest running sitcom, the longest running animation, and the longest running scripted Primetime TV series in U.S. history. All as a cartoon aimed towards adults.

Hey y’all! I guess it’s time for an update!
I just wanted to let y'all know that there will be an update soon, especially with the Death of Tumblr soon.
Finals are this week so once I get done with those I'll be off for a month. An official update will be posted and we'll have a long chat about how we're moving forward.
And then a flood of content will be coming through so buckle up motherfuckers! This is gonna be a ride!

On This Day In History
On December 5, 1901, Walt Disney was born. He is most famous for being the pioneer of modern animation and created the famous Walt Disney Studios. Through his work, animation has become a legitimate artform and seen has a viable form of entertainment throughout the world. On December 15, 1966, Walt Disney died due to complications from lung cancer.
What an inspiration...
So just this morning, I heard about Stephen Hillenburg's death after his battle with ALS.
For those of you who don't recognize, Stephen Hillenburg's is the creator of Spongebob Squarepants. He was also an animator, a cartoonist, and a marine biology teacher.
His passing is being mourned by fans all across the world.
However, in spite of this tradegy, fans are rallying together to sign this petition: https://www.change.org/p/nfl-have-sweet-victory-performed-at-the-super-bowl
If you couldn't guess by the link, it's a petition to have Sweet Victory at the Super Bowl halftime show. Yes. THAT Sweet Victory. Currently, we're a little over 20,000 signatures away from 200,000. As anyone on the internet can tell you, Change.org changes very little. But I think that in the best situation, we can at least get a statement from the NFL, and honestly that would be EPIC.
At first, this petition was just started as a joke but the fact that it has over 177,000 signatures makes this an interesting story to follow through to its conclusion.
I'm not going to ask you to sign the petition if you don't want to. That's just stupid. But I actually found an article about this on FOX NEWS of all places and I wanted to share.

On November 22, 1995, Toy Story was released to the general public in theaters across America. Toy Story is the first fully computer animated feature film as well as the first feature film of Pixar animations. Toy Story would be nominated for 3 Academy Awards and would win a Special Achievement Academy Award for its advances in technology. On December 20, 2005, the Librarians of Congress inducted Toy Story into the National Film Registry for its "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significan[ce.]"

So, I know that for me, personally, when an AMA comes up with my favorite content creators, I always get a little nervous or “camera shy” because I never know what questions to ask. I want it to be a cool and interesting question, but I can’t think of anything that hasn’t been asked before.

Holy shit I have 27 followers.
Well.
I wasn't anticipating this for another... 3 months or so.
This is a bit of a shock.
I don't know if I can scrounge up anything BIG as a celebration. But I think I can manage a small little follower thing, if you guys wanna participate! I was thinking, since I'll be off of school for Thanksgiving, maybe we could do a subscriber AMA for a hot minute or two? Of course, it’s the holidays and I want to spend time with the fam while I’m still here, but answering some questions when I’m able will be a nice, chill thing to do in the evening. I think I'll leave it open for about a week since the holidays are crazy and this community is still growing.
Luckily, I've already got a sheet of questions I've slowly been building up in case there ever came a time that we wanted to do this. I’ll post it just after I post this and then we can get this ball rolling!!

On November 19, 2013, Frozen would premiere in El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, California. Frozen would be written in the history books as the highest grossing animated film of all time.

On November 18, 1928, Steamboat Willie premiered in Universal’s Colony Theater. Important for a number of reasons, Steamboat Willie was the first Disney animated cartoon to have fully synchronized pictures and sound. It was also the first premiered cartoon to feature the iconic Mickey Mouse. The popularity of this short-film would become the foundation of the legacy of Disney movies and the Walt Disney franchise that has become famous throughout the world.
And thus, a legend was born…
I thought the first short with Mickey was Plane Crazy? It was shown to a small audience May 15th, 1928. Wouldn’t that mean that Mickey actually turned 90 in May? (Not trying to argue with anyone just confused)

Technically, you are correct. Plane Crazy is the first cartoon short to feature Mickey Mouse as it’s star and it “premiered” on May 15th, 1928. However, things get a little bit tricky when you look into it.
Plane Crazy premiered to a test audience in an unnamed theater in California. This small test audience failed produce any distributors and thus, Plane Crazy was placed on the back shelf for a while until Disney could get some company backing to disperse his cartoon in theaters across America. It wasn’t until Disney and his fellow colleagues managed to be able to sync up sounds and music to his cartoons--- as in the case of Steamboat Willie--- that he was able to get companies interested in showing his cartoons in Theaters. Once Steamboat Willie premiered in November 18, 1928 and gained a huge market success, Plane Crazy was revisited, sounded was added, and it was finally released to the general public on March 17, 1929--- 5 months after the release of Steamboat Willie.
So, “technically”, yes. You are correct. Plane Crazy was the first Mickey Mouse cartoon. It also “premiered” on May 15, 1928. But really, that’s splitting hairs when you look at it---- Does one small audience screening mean that it was actually released to the general public? I would argue that no, it doesn’t. Test screenings rarely produce the exact same product before and after the showing, and since sound was added to the cartoon afterwards, you could argue it’s a whole new product. So, while you could say that this screening means that a small number individuals outside of the company got to see a relatively finished product and thus it was technically released to the public, I maintain that Steamboat Willie is the origins of Mickey Mouse. And thus, I rest my case!
