The SCREEN Act - An explicit age verification bill for the entire internet - and the senate version of KOSA with the duty of care portion are the most notable, amongst the others. This is not a package, but individual bills.
The list of harms in KOSA’s “duty of care” provision is so broad and vague that no platform will know what to do regarding any given piece of content. Forums won’t be able to host posts with messages like “love your body,” “please don’t do drugs,” or “here’s how I got through depression” without fearing that an attorney general or FTC lawyer might later decide the content was harmful. Support groups and anti-harm communities, which can’t do their work without talking about difficult subjects like eating disorders, mental health, and drug abuse, will get caught in the dragnet.

Hello I am calling to talk about the Internet bills up for voting on August 5.
The SCREEN would enable constant surveillance of American citizens, and put the sensitive data of everyone - especially children - at risk. it would pressure websites to contract with shady third-party verification companies to collect and store incredibly sensitive identifying info, like our drivers’ licenses and passports, in insecure databases. The UK's disastrous rollout of the Online Safety Act is a perfect example of how unpopular, dangerous, and ineffective these laws are. Age verification bills mandate or incentivize that personal data be collected all in one place, making it easy for hackers gather, endangering children' s information and safety.
KOSA not only has similar problems, but gives state attorney generals too much power to sue any website for any reason. The last thing we need is a nanny state telling adults what we can and cannot see online.
Please spread the word to vote against these two bills this wednesday. And also look carefully for similar problems in any other bills.

Sorry about the almost 2 year-long bout of radio silence! A lot has happened since December of 2024 and now. Like, a lot a lot. To put it simply: finally finished college, graduated with an associate's degree in creative writing, dealt with some writer's block, got into a bunch of new fandoms while also reigniting my interest in older ones, and got a job at a bookstore. In other words, got life in the way and I haven't made as much progress on Midnight Thief as I would've liked 🙃

Don't be fooled by bullshit like Turbotax. If you make less than $89,000 a year (I'd say confidently that's 99% of Tumblr), you are entitled to use the IRS free file tool for your taxes. This page from the IRS lists all the software providers they have partnered with to provide this service. I have only used one on the list, but it was as good as or maybe better than Turbotax, and I repeat, free for the federal tax return. You MIGHT still have to pay a fee to file a state tax return, but it should be nominal. If you don't want to do it online, you can also go to the IRS to print out the forms directly and turn them in.
DO NOT let Turbotax trick you out of money. Drop them like a hot potato. This is a "fuck Turbotax" account.

if you are in a country like the UK or australia with recent age verification laws, this changes nothing. if you are NOT in any of those countries, this will work the same way their age verification does.
on discord, this DOES NOT outright block access to the app. it will prevent you from accessing channels marked as age-restricted, and it will prevent you from viewing images that the automatic image detection software deems as "adult content". which is annoying, but that software doesn't pick up on too much. also, it doesn't stop you from sharing images with third party hosting services lol
again, you DO NOT NEED TO VERIFY TO CONTINUE USING DISCORD. DMs will work fine. most servers will work fine.

TO ANYONE WHO USES DISCORD- FOUR AI SCRAPING BOTS HAVE BEEN SECRETLY ADDED TO YOUR SERVERS WITHOUT YOUR CONSENT
Saw this going around and tested it myself, and I can confirm that this is unfortunately legit. Four hidden bots have been placed in any existing or newly created Discord server that are harvesting data, images, and most concerningly, one seems to be a face swap bot.
Due to them being invisible, banning them from your servers isn't possible without their ID's, which I've typed out for easy access.
Banning is done with the /ban command with each string pasted in one at a time. Four ban commands in total.
Image proof below and further information. This was in my PERSONAL server that has existed for +5 years. Discord is harvesting your shit without your consent, fight back.
Hey so in case you're like me and wondered: Can you ban members without them being in the server?
The answer is yes, you absolutely can! It'll look like this - the numbers you paste will be what's "banned"
However my sibling tried this in her servers and found that One of them was NOT a string of numbers, like so:

So if you ban these numbers and the message shows the actual username? Pretty sure that means they were in there.
Very unpleasant way to check the veracity of this post but hopefully this is a helpful tip for anyone who was concerned - my sib would have No Reason to add these in herself and didn't have any clue it was in there.
Personally, I'd say even if you are still worried about misinfo/fearmongering/etc from this post, think of it this way - worst case scenario is you're banning a bot you'll never use or need. Not a person, a bot. There's no real damage done playing it safe and running the ban commands through, aside from maybe losing some time doing so.
