365 Days of Art
It started with Inktober, in 2017. I was enthusiastic because I could see the improvement in my art, in just 30 days. I worked as a digital artist for more than 10 years before, but this was just the beginning of my watercolor journey. I've been always too scared to begin. I felt the paper was too expensive for a beginner like me, I would ruin all my paintings and it would be a waste of money. I used to create watercolor effects in my digital vector artworks, just so that I could see some texture that would remind me of painting, but that was not real. And then one day I decided, I will pursue my passion for watercolor.
I gave myself a year to learn, I took 2 short courses in January 2018, but because I was painting on a daily basis, I didn't feel the need to learn anymore. I felt like practice did its wonders. There were no rules, as long as I painted in watercolors, and because I didn't want to feel pressure, I decided I will paint whatever I want. I've been wanting to paint whatever I wanted for a long time, but working with clients was always a priority and I kept neglecting my passion for art. I was surprised of how this project became a part of my life, a new skill that made me excited. It was a real challenge, which means it was by no means easy. Sometimes I had no inspiration, or I didn't like the way the paintings turned out, but almost 99% times I kept the painting and uploaded it. This project was teaching me not just to paint, but to understand life better. I often caught myself feeling disappointed about the outcome of the whole project, because I had a bad day and I didn't like the painting I created. Or, I was enthusiastic and I thought all my paintings will be successful from that point, only because I had a great day painting. I always surprised myself, because when I thought I couldn't go on, I somehow did. This was a great lesson, isn't it the same in life? Whenever you get disappointed by a bad day, there's always a new blank page on the next day. The pressure of coming up with something new every day, helped me to dive deep into my soul and find things that I didn't even know were there. I've learnt so much about myself, I became aware of who I am, what my style is and how I communicate visually. I realised I love nature, animals and people, and I found my color palette as well.
Though it didn't turn out the way I've planned, because I always set the bar too high, I started to have migraines and health problems, unfortunately. But I kept painting, just with a slower pace and took some days off when I needed. People started to recognise my new style and I have received many requests to work on amazing projects. Lot of things happened, but what is important now, is that in the present I am working as a full-time illustrator for an awesome company. While this experience and all the work I've invested in my career helped me to get where I am today, the project still goes on, but only when I have the time for it.
The 365 days of art project is the best thing that happened in my life. I could write a whole book about it, there's so much more to share, but maybe some other time.
I invite you to visit my online shop, prints and stationery items with selected artworks I've specifically created for the 365 days project:

365 Days Of Art Challenge + Updates
It’s been a while since I shared with you any updates of my artistic journey. So it was TIME to write a new blog post, because there is so much to talk about!
I started this year with a huge challenge, or project that would last hopefully a whole year, if not more. It’s the #365daysofartchallenge ! I have seen lot of artists doing this challenge and I was quite interested to see how much they have grown each day, week or month. I loved to see every day what do they come up with. I am always easily inspired and I always had too many ideas for illustrations that I’ve been holding back for years, that it was time to give in and jump into the unknown.
If you know me, you’ve probably heard me talking often about how I want to just create illustrations for myself, or how I love independence in art etc. I always looked at doing art for myself as something too egoistic or guilty, because some people didn’t get the motivation and passion behind my words, and I often felt discouraged. It’s nothing wrong with that, because the dreams planted in us are only for us to understand and reveal fully, because it’s our passion, it’s very personal. I’ve been doing anything but what I love for years, and I had several burnouts, and I didn’t know why. I was doing graphic design, animations, etc. I barely worked on illustrations, and sometimes became a bit scared, what if I lose this? It’s the only thing I can do and I have no backup plans. And after a couple of breakdowns my thoughts went back again to the same thing, that it occasionally did for years. I always had this idea of doing art just for the sake of art, no client based work, no limitations, not marketing anything, doing art without any purpose. It’s funny how art, which initially was intended to be a form of self expression, became a service for businesses and we automatically think it’s foolish to create art to just express ourselves, as if it doesn’t have any value anymore. Don’t get me wrong! I really believe creating art for clients is just as awesome as independently, because they challenge us and see things we don’t see and together we can create great art. I’ve worked on really amazing projects and I am very happy for the whole relationship, the process and the outcome. But, as an artist I feel that art is just another way to channel and process my thoughts, it’s another way I express myself. I am quite a rational person, with a huge dose of freedom in creativity, which is a very weird combination. And I wanted for so long to let my creativity come out and to work on something that I am very passionate about, something that is very personal.
Why am I doing this challenge?
1. When I was young I was very shy about my art, I kept drawing in my notebook and whenever someone came closer, I just closed it and didn’t ever wanted to show it to anyone. At the university this wasn’t possible, because I had to pass and there were no notebooks I could close, there were huge sheets of paper and teachers/students came behind my back talking about what they think about my art. I don’t want to create art for myself only, I want to create art and share it with people, to make my and their days more colorful.
2. I am very obsessed about getting better and better, and I think this instinct is very common at creatives. I just love to explore and learn more. So since watercolor was a new medium for me, as scared as I was, I thought I’d give it a try, in fact 365 tries.
3. It benefits even client based works, because I have more knowledge about how to approach a specific topic or project.
4. I also look at this as a journey, each day I have to come up with a new idea for a painting and I believe that this whole project it’s not pointless at all, it has the beauty of evolving and turning into something no one could see on day 1. So while I am not really sure what this will be, I also know that something great will definitely come out of it!
When am I doing this challenge?
One of the greatest advantage of such huge challenges, is that it teaches us to be disciplined and work hard. I noticed the best is if I wake up very early and even if I am very sleepy, I can create a better piece of art, than later that day. So I try to manage my day like this whenever I can. I also want to rest, so this is why I sometimes don’t work on weekends or on days when I am very busy. But at the same time I am trying my best to create at least one piece of art per day.
What tools am I using?
I invested in professional watercolor paints, I am using Schmincke Horadam watercolor tube paints. I am really in love with them and I am thinking of creating a blogpost with all the tools I use for this project! I also became a student and I am taking courses from #schoolism teachers. I’ve taken one course so far, and I feel much more confident using this medium.
These were my thoughts on this exciting new project, and I kindly welcome you to follow me on this journey. I post every piece of art on MY INSTAGRAM. If you have any questions or any piece of advice, feel free to share it with me on my Instagram or my Facebook.
I hope you like my 365 days of art project, and I wish you all the best possible.
With love, Jean.
My #Inktober2017 Experience + End Of 2017
It’s been a long time since I posted anything here, lot of things happened and even though I had a very productive and busy October I still couldn’t finish Inktober on time. November and December came ... yes, I was still busy. But I am very optimistic and happy that I managed to actually finish it! This is the first year I actively took part in this awesome challenge and completed it. Wow, I am so happy!
So, since this is soo not actual anymore I will not write what I intended to write when I finish it (the ink, paper, art tools etc.). Instead of that, I’d love to tell you my experience and my hopes and wishes for next year!
I’d love to start with the fact that Inktober was a great challenge and it inspired me a lot! While working on these paintings, I realized how important it is to match colors. It might sound funny, but it’s true! I love how the monochrome illustrations turned out, but I was thinking that I have to focus more on my color palette. I usually choose colors intuitively, but I want to study colors more deeply. I’d love to step outside my comfort zone and create more art! So the challenge never ends, you will see it everything on my Instagram!
Looking back at 2017, it was a tough year! I experienced lot of things and I have quite mixed feelings about it, but I am grateful for the knowledge and wisdom I gained even through the bad parts. I look at 2017 as the year that prepared me for something greater and I am grateful for all the lovely people who were and are with me on this awesome journey!
With all that said, I have lot of dreams and hopes that are about to come true hopefully next year! I hope you had a lovely Christmas and I wish you a wonderful next year!
With love, Jean.

#Septembersketch Is Over - Thank You For Participating!
I love to draw portraits, to challenge myself and learn new things. #Septembersketch was one of those projects that allowed me to learn, give and have fun at the same time. I’d love to write about my experience during this drawing challenge! I earlier shared a blog post in which I talked about my initial thoughts about this project, about how I got the idea and what I expected from this project. If you are curious, please read this blog post.
I planned to create a series of 100 portrait sketches, it was what I wanted a couple of years ago and this year too, but due to lack of time and #inktober I decided to keep it only in September. Starting with the first announcement of this project I slowly started to get tags and messages and I am very happy for them. We reached 18 portraits in only a couple of days!
One of the reasons I created this project was to get better at drawing and as always the more you practice the better you get at almost anything. This is what happened, the last sketches turned out more accurate and I could create them faster. I also learned to be less of a perfectionist, and I had to just let it go and focus on the next one. I had days on which I created a maximum of 3 or 4 sketches and I had to be really fast. What I noticed while creating them, even if I had to hurry, was that I sometimes felt like I get to know the person. It might be intuition but I think that it’s also the fact that I learn the features and the characteristics of a person during this process. What I find very fascinating about this project is that I didn’t get to draw people based on staged photographs, I didn’t draw celebrities. I had the amazing opportunity to draw real authentic people, people who are on social media and were brave enough to join this project! I am also feeling good because I could give something to complete strangers (and to some friends, because some of my wonderful friends joined too), and I got to know them a little.
I am very thankful and happy for all the tags and follows and messages I have received through these days. I plan to re-open the sketch season, I don’t know exactly when, probably in December! So if you wanted to join this project but you didn’t - for some reason - or if this is the first time you read about it and you’d love me to include you in these 100 portraits, don’t you worry, you’ll be able to join in the future.
If you are here for the first time and you probably don’t know what I am talking about, I welcome you to visit my INSTAGRAM. For a couple of days I created free and fast sketches of random people. I plan on creating more fun projects like this, so if you feel like you’d love to follow my works, please do it!
I hope you liked my project, the #septembersketch of random faces and portraits and I am looking forward to #inktober! I hope I’ll catch up soon and can share with you my Inktober works!
With love, Jean.
Want To Get A Free Sketch? Join #Septembersketch On My Instagram
I am very excited to share with you this fun project! So this September as I found my old sketchbook (I think it’s around 7 years old) I discovered my old sketches and started to publish them on my instagram. I love looking at my old drawings, and while most of the time I am aware of the many steps I made since then, I rarely find some art that I really like. So I loved looking at the sketches of random people that I created a couple of years ago for various reasons. I love to capture people’s expressions and I just had a good feeling about this project. It started with an idea, why not drawing 100 random sketches of people? I would get better at drawing and they would get a free sketch. I would have to focus on creating the sketch for a person who has to like it, and hopefully will, and I also have to work fast. It would be just like those drawing classes at the uni, when we had only a few minutes or even seconds to capture someone’s character, to draw, and STOP! I haven’t drawn these sketches with a timer, but I made sure I don’t try to be so perfectionist (as I tend to be) and I would capture/understand the character early when I just look at the photo. It’s so fascinating to me! Sadly, I haven’t created all the 100 sketches that I wanted, I made around 30.
So while I made sure I am active on social media and put up some of my old drawings that I loved and kept as a secret until now, I just had a brilliant idea! I am eagerly waiting for #inktober - God knows if I can make it until the end of the month - but I also want to do something in September. In fact I’d love to keep this as a habit, each month has a surprise/project for me and possibly more activity on social media. I don’t want to be passive, when I can learn and have fun learning!
This is why I had to rethink this project and I came up with a few new rules. Why those rules? First of all I know how time consuming it was for me to talk to each person when I was working on this project a couple of years ago. It is quite time consuming to draw, and I love it, but looking for messages and searching for photos, downloading them is quite a lot. Tags are also important, so people can find the project easily and join.
So if you were wondering what are the details and very simple rules of this project, please take a look at:
The #Septembersketch Project
This project runs on my instagram only!
I don’t know if I will ever make the 100 sketches, but we can have as much as possible!
I invite you to JOIN, without you it won’t be possible to achieve this goal!

Drawing Outdoors Challenge
Being a freelance or independent artist shouldn’t mean one has to spend their whole life in an office, in fact sketching/drawing used to be and is still a quite fun way to study buildings, people, animals, landscapes etc. While the internet offers lot of tutorials and reference photos there are some things that it can never give: real life experience. It’s great to watch a video and learn the way a character walks, talks laughs etc. and create sketches, but capturing everyday life means so much more than that. It is about being there, out there, where the character or the subject is present. Plus drawing outside doesn’t mean one has to study anything, it can be a fun doodling time while catching some fresh air too! I believe many people who read this are probably not artists so you can replace the drawing part with reading, writing, brainstorming or anything similar!
So I’ve seen a couple of youtube artists stepping outside of their comfort zones and going to different places to sketch or paint. I see it a bold and fun activity and I have to admit I haven’t really done any of these, except when in fifth grade we all went to a park with our art teacher and drew, but it was mostly playing around and having fun. Still, it’s not a bad idea, and it’s quite tempting to me lately, I might give it a try someday and share my experience on this blog!
I’d love to share some tips in a form of a list of where I believe it’s a great idea to go when it comes about drawing, painting, reading, writing or brainstorming etc. Depending on where you live it can be urban or rural area, less or more closer to nature!
Peaceful Coffee Shop Or Restaurant
I believe this is one of the most challenging thing, because if there’s one thing I don’t like when I draw it’s when someone is looking. But it’s not the end of the world, it can be relaxing! It’s not really outdoors, but it’s outside the door of the office. I believe if it becomes uncomfortable it’s easy to just leave and continue somewhere else!
Park
Parks can be more relaxing when it comes about reading or drawing. It’s a lovely way to clear our minds and let go of the business of everyday life, focusing on just being. It can be a great place to go to write, read or even draw!
Airport
Being at the airport can be very boring sometimes, it can take hours to finally get to the plane. But it’s also lovely because there are lot of people, characters great for sketching. A great source of inspiration of fashion sense and personalities!
Streets With Beautiful Buildings
Buildings, architecture are perfect subject for learning when it comes about backgrounds. Drawing backgrounds from memory can only work if we study different kinds of buildings, places etc. It’s an awesome way to observe vehicles and people too!
Forest
I think one of the best places is simply being in a quiet and safe forest, listening to the birds and drawing all the different trees, plants leaves etc. All the green and calm stuff, who doesn’t love that?
Mountains
Another peaceful place: the mountains. All these different places have their different kind of peace and landscapes. I think it’s absolutely amazing to be able to combine the relaxing effect of just being in the nature and the relaxing feeling of just sketching/drawing, even writing or reading.
At A Pond/Lake/River
It’s also inspiring and relaxing to be near water. Going to a pond, lake or river could be really refreshing and awesome subject of studies. It can be a lovely place to spend some quality time!
Village
The perfect way to study nature, animals and beautiful landscapes is to go to a lovely village. I believe it has its own world and vibe and it can be captured beautifully!
These are some places I believe are great for relaxing and studying! Most of them are simply places you visit when you travel, but I believe it should be a habit to occasionally just leave the office and relax. Whether going to draw, write or relax is great to have a friend or two along with you!
I hope you found some inspiration in this blog post or maybe it can work as a lovely reminder to spend more time outside, because we tend to spend so much time inside! There’s lot of inspiration and beauty outside, and by visiting awesome places we truly become rich of beautiful memories!
With love, Jean.
Illustrated Posters
Today I decided to share with you two very dear projects that I worked on a couple of years ago. The client was Scoala De Muzica Logos, a non-profit music school in Romania. They contacted me to create two poster illustrations for their lovely concerts organized for children’s day and mother’s day. I really loved their ideas and vision and I had lot of fun working on these illustrations. I’d love to share with you some more information about these posters.
Children’s Day Concert - Poster Illustration:
This poster was an invitation to their concert held on the 1st of June, children’s day in Romania. The idea was to create an illustration with friendly animals playing instruments in the forest. The animals in real life would be the children/students and their teachers that will get on stage and sing or play the instruments. As always I created some sketches on paper with the characters, I then scanned and imported them in Adobe Illustrator where I created the vector illustration for the poster. I added nature elements and created the background, and finally I added all the information about this lovely event.
Mother’s Day Concert - Poster Illustration:
The second poster that I was asked to create was for Mother’s day, the 8th of March in Romania. Since this celebration is held in spring when nature is in bloom I was asked to include this along with a mother and children, showing love. This was also a vector illustration so the process was the same as the one I mentioned above. The idea was to showcase who the concert was dedicated for and to create a lovely friendly inviting poster for people to come.
I was honored to be invited to these events and went to both concerts, I listened to beautiful songs and saw many talented and hardworking artists, I really enjoyed it! I am glad I was able to work on fun projects like this and I hope you like the posters I created for these concerts! Let me know what you think?

BOOKS I LOVE #1 - Discover The 4 Seasons By Susanne Riha
I’ve been thinking lately and wanted to post more about what inspires me, so I decided to create a series of blog posts titled “Books I Love“. I think it will be very easy for me to write about something I really love and am passionate about: books, illustrated books.
I’ve already shared one of my favorite books here and I believe this blog should share more inspiration so I am sharing with you another favorite book of mine.
I have purchased this lovely book one year ago at a book fair organized in my hometown, in Romania. I just couldn’t walk by with empty hands after seeing this beauty. The author is Susanne Riha and the book shares beautiful images about seasons. If you don’t know me, I have to tell you that I am deeply in love with this topic: nature, animals, seasons ... So I truly felt Susanne Riha created this book really just for me! The hand drawn illustrations speak more than what words can say, and I really love the fact that this book is 90% illustrations and 10% text.
It somehow reminds me of my childhood, when I spent lot of time outdoors, before the internet really took over. I truly feel lucky I was one of those people who spent their childhood without internet and that I can cherish those memories, when all I had was: school, spring breaks, summer holidays, winter holidays, free time, a big garden and my dreamy thoughts. It also reminds me of my first attempts of creating landscape illustrations more seriously, when I was little. I feel these memories are deep inside of us and they will always be. Even if we live in this era of high technology and social media, I know that some of us still feel deep appreciation for our lovely nature, for what it can give us and we still remember those sweet memories from our childhood, being kids and just playing freely.
The book shares interesting facts about nature and animals - how they behave and live while seasons change. It’s very lovely!
I love to see books like this, with so much work and attention to details. Having a book so lovely like this on your shelf makes you feel like you own a treasure!
I hope you love this book as much as I do! If you have any books in mind, ones you love and would share them with me, feel free to let me know!
With love, Jean.
9 Tips On How To Stay Motivated As An Artist
Being an artist is not just a simple job or a career, it’s a lifestyle. At first it started with a passion, then it became a hunger, it grew and it grew while it became a vision. It then became a different direction, a journey and then a dream career = lonely working hours spent in a cozy decorated room (if you’re a freelancer). While we are caught up in our crazy schedule and obsessed with getting better and better - life is going on.
Sometimes it works, and it’s wonderful. You are full of ideas, energy, passion and hope. Everything is just flowing and you feel like you’re on the top of a hill. And then there are some days when nothing really works out. Why is it like that? If you have the passion and everything, why is it that sometimes the very thing you enjoyed becomes a pain in the neck? You just loose your motivation, you don’t even feel passionate at all. You’re simply stuck.
I am not an expert, but in my opinion there are a lot of things that can cause this. First of all, you are working and focusing on learning and creating something new. Constantly challenging your mind to come up with something new can get really exhausting. Even if it is supposed to be fun, it isn’t always. Second of all, as I said before being an artist is a lifestyle, so many artists, including me even if the working hours are over we are still brainstorming like crazy. This is also something extremely tiring. And of course there is the fact that while you work you need silence, but that is the very thing that frustrates you because you don’t want to live your whole life in loneliness.
In this blog post I am sharing some tips on how to stay motivated as an artist. Not every artist is working as a freelancer, but is very healthy to everyone to once in a while do something to avoid losing motivation. Here are my tips:
1. Pause
If you can allow yourself to take a break, that would help tremendously. I used to have months with no free weekends and I was so caught up with work that I barely took a break. These periods didn’t last long, but I then found a great advice to take small breaks and I implemented it in my work schedule. It really helped a lot! If you find yourself really stuck and burnt out, it’s the sign to take a longer break. Go on a vacation, visit cities, collect memories or just simply relax.
2. Work outdoors
It’s not healthy to spend our life indoors all the time. If your job allows you to work from anywhere, just simply do it. It can be very frustrating and challenging at first to draw in public, but if you have artist friends you can go together and create some sketches in a park, or in a coffee shop. If you feel uncomfortable, just leave, and find a new place to continue.
3. Collect inspiring stuff
Having a folder full of inspiring stuff can really boost our motivation if we look at them the right way. Don’t look at them and then compare yourself to them. Just collect inspiring stuff. The internet is full of inspiration: Youtube, Instagram, Pinterest etc. are the perfect source to find inspiration. You can also go to a museum or almost to any places that you feel would inspire you.
4. Set goals
Sometimes the very reason why we feel unmotivated can be the fact that we don’t have a direction. We feel lost, because we don’t know what do we want. It’s good to take some time and sit back and create some realistic goals which we actually work for to achieve them.
5. Have a new hobby
Doing something different than what we do on a daily basis can calm our thoughts and switch off our focus from work. A new hobby would be a great way to do this. It can be a new sport, taking photos etc.
6. Change something
I once read somewhere that monotony can be overwhelming until we change things and then after too many changes we need monotony again. I believe even placing our desk the opposite side of the office can break the circle of monotony. The feeling of something new in general can be really refreshing.
7. Experiment
I think the lack of self expression is actually the main reason we sometimes feel burnt out or stuck. I believe experimenting is very important to find our voice or style. Take some time to just experiment, let go of perfectionism, express yourself, be bold and let creativity flow.
8. Clean your thoughts
Our thoughts are always aligned with our mood, or our mood reflects our thoughts. So if we lack of inspiration and motivation our thoughts need some examination and we need to fix them, change them. Don’t bring yourself down, it takes lot of energy and no one wants that.
9. Have fun
We often forget to relax and have fun. Do something that makes you smile, every day.
These are some tips to stay motivated and inspired mostly for artists, but not only. I believe many of these tips are relevant to anyone who works indoors or have a crazy schedule. I personally look at these tips as ‘homework’ for me! I hope you enjoyed this post and if you have any more tips on how to stay motivated you are welcome to share them!
Feel free to reblog this blog post to share these tips with your friends!
I wish you a wonderful week!

GAME DESIGN: Illustrations For An Application For Kids
I am very excited to share with you a lovely project I worked on a couple of years ago. I had lot of fun creating these illustrations for a mobile application for kids! The project was for a developer who wanted to teach kids different things through this application: mostly math and teamwork.
As usually I created some sketches on paper, I scanned them and created the illustrations in Adobe Illustrator based on the sketches that I made. I created the characters, all the elements and the background. The process was a few weeks and I am very happy with the result! This was the second project that I created for an app, and while I was working on it I became even more passionate about illustration! It reminded me why I wanted to be an artist, why I pursued this as a career and I felt really happy being one.
The images I am sharing with you in this blog post are just for one app, I created tons of illustrations for 5 apps (of one big game), but this one is my favorite so that’s why I am sharing it with you!
Unfortunately I haven’t heard back from the client since then and I can’t give you a link to get this app, but if I will ever hear anything I will let you know, definitely!
This is a very dear project to me, because I worked really hard on it and it was the biggest project I worked on back then. I hope you like it! Let me know?
I wish you a wonderful Friday!

Where did I get my passion for illustration from?
This is going to be a very personal blog post, I am going to expose the deepest secret behind my passion for illustration, haha! In fact, I already shared a little about this here in this project.
I am feeling quite nostalgic and I am happy to look at these illustrations that I once was and still am excited about. I feel quite weird of being obsessed about this manual, but here I am. I have a very strong respect for the artist/artists: Simion Morărescu and Elvira Morărescu.
I once shared in an infographic that I was about 7 years old when I got this book full of illustrations at school. I was in first grade and because when you are in first grade you don’t know how to write or read yet, the book had to be full of illustrations. Which is amazing! So this manual is nothing but illustrations and is from the communist era of Romania. I am a Hungarian and the book is for the Hungarian minority living in Romania. The topics are quite lovely, the book has a sweet feeling that I can’t really explain. When I look at this book with these illustrations I do nothing but smile, it brings me back to that time and somehow it doesn’t bring back the memories, it brings back a tiny little piece of that feeling I had back in time. Have you ever experienced such thing?
When I was in first grade, everything was new to me, school was very new to me! The building, the kids, the schoolmarm, the books, the notebooks, the pencils, the erasers, the markers, the blackboards and the lessons. The numbers, the letters, the pen and ink, the inky stains, the homework, the bell, the breaks, the smell of the classroom mixed with nervous feelings, the smell of books and the smell of chalks, the perfume of the schoolmarm, the snack we ate at 10 o’clock. The most intense was September, the first days of autumn and the school year. It always rained. I remember the feeling of being lost in the crowd of kids on the first day of the school year, being happy and anxious at the same time. Years later on these days I was wondering how my classmates changed, they had longer hair and they spent the holidays in different places. We all had to talk about what we did in those 3 months of the summer. I remember of being nervous each day waking up and learning to put everything in my schoolbag. I didn’t want to miss a thing, I was disciplined to always do what they say. And there was this book full of illustrations, and our schoolmarm was a great one! We had to draw the illustrations we saw in the book in our notebook and this way we would learn the words in Romanian. I don’t know how to explain this, I felt like this was the best thing to do!
So I really believe this is the reason I am so passionate today about illustration, in fact I always was.
Let me tell you what I like about these illustrations: all the topics, everything that we experience is illustrated in a beautiful way. Lot of elements, objects, animals, plants, school, family, food, and seasons. All of these illustrated in a lovely vintage style!
If you want to check out the whole manual, follow this link.
I hope you enjoyed this blog post about a book that is very dear to me and I am curious of your favorite books, feel free to share them with me!

Can I Be An Artist If I Haven’t Gone To Art School/University?
This is a very often asked question that I read on the internet nowadays. I believe as someone who HAVE finished art university and has several years of experience in art career I can share with you my personal opinion on this question.
I really believe going to an university of arts helped me to understand more art and develop my skills. I truly believe art school and university are very important when it comes about studying art.
As I said I believe it’s very important, but NOT necessary to become an artist. In my life I have advanced a lot while I studied art in the university, but I have advanced even more after I finished it. Because it was my choice. Because studying doesn’t stop at graduation or getting a diploma.
I am very happy and proud of my years at the university, but I feel very inspired when I see lot of artists out there, and I am shocked to find out they are fully self-taught and haven’t gone to art school.
I think it depends on someone’s style and direction in art whether or not they want to take art lessons, if someone wants something that requires basic knowledge that you can pick up at a university or art school. I would have said it depends on the personality you have, some people learn better if they are on their own, other when they face deadlines and exams, but what I truly believe is that beyond all these things, one thing matters: your choice.
Getting better at something requires lot of willpower and perseverance, and that doesn’t depend on a teacher. After university we all must learn on our own to discipline ourselves to learn more, get even better and work hard. So it’s all our choice.
Something that I want to add to this is that getting into an university of arts already requires a portfolio and hard work. So if you feel like you have to go to university to learn more and get better, do it as you feel. But if you feel like there’s enough tutorials out there and you have enough passion and motivation to do it on your own, again I believe you are free to do that!
I don’t want to persuade anyone of anything, but if you feel this is hopeless, feel free to search for self-taught artists on google, you’ll be shocked and I guarantee it will boost your motivation.
With all that said, whether you go to university or not, it’s important to enjoy the process of creating art and never lose our passion. For this the best is to keep practicing and creating art for fun for yourself!
I hope I helped you with this tiny bit of information and my honest opinion and I wish you good luck and all the best!

My Watercolor Experience
A couple of months ago I decided to step out of my comfort zone and challenge myself. I love illustration, and everything visual and I always admired and felt lot of appreciation when it comes about watercolors. I used to struggle with the idea of painting with watercolors, because I found it a pretty difficult technique and I had no experience in it. But starting with February watercolor became the only technique I used to create illustrations and I have to admit that I have deeply fallen in love with it!
I really enjoyed creating vector illustrations in the past, but I realized I always wanted my illustrations have a ‘watercolorish’ look. So for this I often used various textures for my vector illustrations. And after years of working in the same medium I felt I needed a change. The other reason why I felt like longing for a change was that I catched myself admiring watercolor illustrations, always. I just looked at my favorite illustrations from very talented artists from all over the world and I realised something. Guess what? 95% were created with watercolors.
So in a fast paced freelancing world where illustrations come alive on the screens, me a fellow vector illustrator decided to go back to traditional technique. What? I remember someone asking me “Now? When technology is growing rapidly?”.
I feel traditional art is really great when it comes about experimenting, and I think it’s the best medium for me right now. It has those random “accidents” which can turn out to be awesome textures/effects, like inventing something new. Of course I can experiment more, and mix traditional with digital, but for now I am happy with painting watercolor illustrations.
I am looking forward to write more about my journey with watercolors, and other experiences in art!
These are some of my works, I hope you like them! I wish you a lovely Friday,
Lots of love, Jean

How I Found My Style In Art?
Hi, I am Jean and I am an illustrator. I have around 10 years of experience and I am one of those people who would never be able to imagine themselves doing anything else, but art.
I am a very visual person and I like to experiment in art. To me art is like a place where “I can make mistakes” in order to create something that I really like.
One of the things that I am grateful for today is that after a lot of years of incredible struggle I finally feel comfortable with my work, it feels natural to draw and I feel it’s my style. Don’t get me wrong I am not bragging, but this is something very important in this business, to enjoy what you are doing. Still, I don’t think my style is complete and “finished”, I believe one’s style is always changing, evolving. Just like people change, their style changes too. Their art changes too.
I will never forget how obsessed I was a few years ago, and how I desperately wanted only one thing: to find my own style. It was all that I could think about and could not rest, because I wanted it to happen. Soon, very soon.
I was longing to find my identity in art, I wanted to define my style and my style to define me.
I was always interested in art, I remember in middle school I was accepting my classmates’ requests to draw them whatever we had to draw during class. It felt relaxing to draw, it helped me to quiet my thoughts.
As I grew I became more analytical but I still had my curiosity for art. In high school I finished maths-informatics and I can’t say I was passionate about it, although I am a rational person, but I have learn’t programming and algorithms. It was a great challenge but I have to admit that I still find these studies very helpful even if I later chose different directions (University of Arts). In my last year of the university, I started to have this huge desire, to find my style. I felt like I am at a point where I had studied anatomy, forms, colors etc. but something was missing. And even if these studies are based on observing and copying what you see, we can not say they exclude the artist’s unique gesture or style.
But I wanted something very very different, I wanted my style to be recognizable, and in illustration I had plenty options and a wide range of tools, techniques that made this possible. I like to think that the way I perceive everything is pretty scientific and to me art is like science, where I can experiment and discover new things. Probably this complexity and freedom in illustration triggered my curiosity and passion. I remember gazing at amazing illustrators’ works, styles and wanted to have this identity in art, to be like them.
I can’t sort all the things that I did in order to find my style, because there are a lot, but I will try. At first I want to point out some mistakes, things I believe were like obstacles in front of me, between me and my goal:
1. First of all, we should know that there are a lot of battles in our minds, and in order to achieve something, at first we need to have the right thoughts. In high-school I finished maths and informathics, so this is known as being very different from art (Warning! Labelling is very very wrong). I wasn’t very good at it, but I’ve always known that I am pretty rational and analytical. My rational background (maths-informatics) and the lack of creative studies before the university kept haunting me limiting my abilities in my mind. I always thought, “art is not really for me, I am too rational, I am not really an artist because I’ve studied programming before”. This was a huge barrier, and a huge mistake. You should never ever believe that you can’t do something that you put your mind, heart, and effort in it.
2. The second mistake I had was that I wanted to hurry the process, I think I was considering more important what I showcase to people than what gratifies my curiosity. I slowly learnt, that artists don’t have to showcase every little piece of art, sketches, anything that they make. Because we are not in the university anymore, and the sketching, learning process is behind our finished piece, and is very personal. In order to create a masterpiece you have to build things up. Just like when you go to the cinema you don’t even think of watching the whole storyboard and alternate scenes, you only want to see a movie. You don’t have to show everything, just what you find worthy to show to the public. Even though I was and I am a pretty patient person, I know now that I didn’t have much patience then; I wanted my first sketch to be perfect, to instantly scan it and to turn it into an illustration. And to show it to the whole world.
3. I was afraid of making a mistake. This goes hand in hand with patience, because somehow I felt like I was during a test and I had to make the first sketch perfect. Whenever I didn’t make it, I started to blame myself, and I was ruining my mood, my curiosity with it.
4. Comparison. This is a tough one. While for an artist art is like food for soul, it’s simply inevitable to look at other artists’ works, achievements and success. We need to grow visually and this hunger brings us in a great error: we tend to compare ourselves with other artists. It’s something that at first I didn’t recognize, because I guess I was too driven, but it’s definitely a big “mistake” and it’s not fair to compare yourself to artists who are probably in the business for ages. Or if I put it this way: do you think it’s fair to compare the IQ of a toddler with the IQ of an adult? Another fact that I found also very important is that we are all different and we all have different journeys. We can’t compare each other’s lives and journeys because these are the things that make us unique, we are all uniquely different.
So what really helped me?
I tried to calm down and started to listen to podcasts from various artists while I was working, I understood they ALL have gone through these struggles just like me and I started to work with less hesitation and fear, with more focus and I was content
Started to ‘force’ myself to think positive and to believe that I can achieve great things
Learnt that I don’t have to showcase anything, perhaps just the final piece; I am not doing art to impress anybody, I am doing art (strictly) for MYSELF (this changes when you work with clients)
I imagined that if I was successful I would have a certain attitude, and I tried to adjust my way of thinking to that. In my mind a successful person is someone who goes through the struggles and becomes much stronger. I was thinking of what would I do differently if I was successful, what steps would I make, would I be optimistic or pessimistic? Would I be content or blaming myself for every mistake? To control our thoughts is a constant struggle but it’s necessary to pay attention to our thinking. Because the patterns of our thoughts create feelings, which then create habits, which will easily be merged into our personality and change it. The roots of a great personality are great thoughts - every single day!
I bought children’s books and studied them
I spent hours in bookstores hunting for new styles, artists, wrote down the names and made my research when I got home
Created various sketches for one single illustration, and then I picked the best one to illustrate it (this is actually the right process)
I was working for stock websites where I didn’t receive critics, earned some little money and I could follow the trends and work freely
I constantly analyzed what can I do to improve, and made a list of what to add to my “style” to be more unique
After a lot of studies of anatomy, it became more natural to draw forms from different perspectives without references
After watching a lot of cartoons, I started to understand more how characters were made, how they are turned and were drawn from different perspectives
My knowledge of anatomy and cartoons were fused together and I slowly started to create characters on my own
I studied great artists and tried to understand their way of thinking
I understood that skills are like muscles, it takes effort to get better and better and you can’t jump from one point to another, you have to go through struggles; in order to have muscles you have to make a lot of sit-ups a day, but if you don’t do them you can not expect to see visible changes
After all, I became a nerd for art!
Conclusion:
So if I had to start all over I would do the exact opposite of the first 4 mistakes that I did:
to understand DEEPLY that I am capable of doing anything, and I would “throw away” all the labels that I and others put on me
live in the present, and enjoying it; I would make sure that I don’t rush things
wouldn’t be afraid of mistakes; wouldn’t deny them, not in art; perhaps I would do a marathon day of drawing and trying to make as much mistakes as I can
I would somehow forbid myself to compare myself with others, I would find a way
With all that said, I don’t think art is an occupation, or a hobby. For me art is a lifestyle, where I absorb everything, I brainstorm, compare, analyze, compose and create things. This is how I process what I consume, this is how I process “reality”. Most of the things I said above, I am still doing them, because it’s natural for me. I find it fascinating that in art I can always learn. Someone once said, in order to be a professional you have to make 5000 artworks. I have around 2500 until now, so there’s still plenty to go.
I want to tell you that this is only my perspective, my personal experience, and this is what I’ve learnt through years, and how I got to where I am now, which is just a stage and I am working so I can go further and further.
If you just started doing art seriously, or you want to improve but can’t see visible changes yet and it’s frustrating and you are struggling - you should know that you are doing exactly the right thing. Because if you ask successful people they would all say that it was extremely difficult in the beginning, and it was a real struggle. The beauty of success and achieving things is that you have to fight for it and that is why you will value it tremendously. We have to go through the battles, fight the doubts down, defeat fear to gain real skills. The things that are hard to achieve are for stubborn people who really want to achieve them.
I truly believe everyone has talent and I wish you good luck, lot of patience, peace and finally great success on your journey of finding your style in art!
Lots of love, Jean

A tiny sketch of my favorite part from the Bible :) "10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people."
