Rambles :
I've kind of always headcanoned them both as ✨️ambiguously brown ✨️ in my head and it wasn't until like 3 days ago that it occured to me that like I Can literally just be self indulgent and make Arthur Anglo-Burmese (aka wasian aka mixed British Burmese which was actually common during the British colonialism of Myanmar from 1885 to 1948 <- but Anglo-Burmese people have been recorded as early as the 1820s) BUT THEN I WAS LIKE "?? am I REALLY? going to give my main fandoms protag an ethnic headcanon that's like. One step away from my actual irl ethnicity?? Isn't that a little TOO indulgent??"
And then I remembered Burmese Days by George Orwell came out in 1934 (year Malevolent Blackstone takes place in) and the idea of John reading it to Arthur endeared me so hard I folded. Bella being Filipina occured to me when I was looking into Asian American history
Anyways Arthur's Anglo-Burmese and has like zero material ties to Myanmar because his parents killed themselves when he was 7 and his family was pretty assimilated (I actually have been debating if he has one British parent and one Burmese parent or if they're both mixed themselves <- I COULD GENUINELY SEE EITHER OR TBH) but maybe he knows like a few words of burmese from his childhood even if he feels disconnected from it
I do think he kind of latches onto any and all pieces of writing and literature about Myanmar whenever he stumbles across it though (because it makes him think of his parents) <- cue John being like "OURTHUR!! I FOUND THIS BOOK!!!"
I actually would not be surprised if him and Parker had probably encountered some Burmese American immigrants while doing their detective work but I feel like Arthur would feel too disconnected from that part of identity (and yknow language barrier😭) to try to establish any connection with them
He probably has a medium spice tolerance. Bella's spice tolerance is a bit higher
I feel like Bella's a tad more in touch with her culture, on account of growing up with living parents, but I feel like her family's almost equally as assimilated (actually debated if she's also mixed and am still low-key debating but I'm leaning more towards the idea that both her parents are Filipino and they just assimilated like crazy and have also just been in America for a while)
Honestly, since racism in Malevolent is canonically in a weird grey area where it functionally doesn't exist, EXCEPT for Irish people specifically/hj, I'm like. Soooo curious about how assimilation and colonialism factor into things <- I do think it probably does to some extent but Harlan doesn't feel qualified to acknowledge (which valid to a degree but also eh?) so it's basically up to personal interpretation
I am already in the process of monster draws, but I feel like queuing up something for after I'm done with that. The finale happened and I dunno, I'm kinda itching to do something with other fans of the show, SO.
