SWTOR Update 7.9 Is Finally Here!!!
The final story patch of Legacy of the Mandos Sith is here!
It's been 4 and a half years since Legacy of the Sith released... and i think we had a decent ending to it. Granted I think due to the unfortunate release schedule of story patches I've forgotten a lot of the story beats and some decisions my character has made (it didn't help that my main is the only one who's at the current stage of the storyline) didn't help things but I'm going to judge this patch mostly stand-alone.
Starting with my player character returning from the last story mission after losing Nul's MacGuffin-- er, Nul's Holocron to explain himself to a very pissed off Empress Acina. She basically wants to have me killed, I get to rant about how i have player character power and have saved them so many times it isnt funny, Lana looks very proud (ngl I think it's the closest Lana's ever been to smiling) and we put a pin in that to deal with Malgus/Jadus/Shae/Heta Kol's plans.
This patch we have a unique gameplay system where the story is told from the perspectives of the different characters in the story arch instead of the player character only. I found this refreshing and some of the sequences were definitely fun! Flying a Fury-class Interceptor as Darth Krovos to break through a blockade, even if it was just an on-the-rails space shooter kind of like regular space missions, was enjoyable, if a little slow. Piloting Basilisk droids as Rass and Jekiah Ordo was one of the highlights for me. The sequence where you're playing as Lana (my beloved) and T7-01 was fun too, though not a much as the others, sadly. Completely wrecking shit as Malgus near the end was super enjoyable.
I think we got a decent, if kind of sappy, conclusion to Shae's story. The Mando drama should finally be over with, and it kind of makes sense how they ended it as idk what else they could have done with Shae Viszla in the future.
The final sequence with the player character (in my case, Sith Inquisitor Darth Joeguarclaw) and Malgus trying to escape the visions in Nul's machine and foil Darth Jadus' plans was alright. The cutscenes with all the visions/ghosts of Malgus' past was cool for character progression. Him going slightly crazy thinking you're an old rival and attacking you, again, and you promptly beating his sith ass again and being able to impatiently mock him for having temper tantrums was fun and the kind of sass i love Inquisitor so much for.
The ending being a cliff hanger left me a little disappointed. You can either let Malgus use the machine to awaken Force Sensitivity across the galaxy or try to stop him. I, personally, went the route of letting him do it. The whole story arch of Inquisitor is about gaining power and freedom (more or less). Freedom from slavery, from masters, from force beings wanting to pilot you like a puppet, from Valkorion and his Eternal Empire. Given the opportunity to grant that freedom to any Force sensitives and stick it to the Jedi and Sith (both of which just want you dead at this point, at least in my case, even though I've done nothing but save the Empire countless times and only went against them a couple times recently) it seemed like my Inquisitor would let Malgus use Nul's machine.
Anyway, my variation of the story ended with the Empire bombarding the planet/Nul's machine to destroy it, I let Malgus use the machine and project his "break free!" monologue across the galaxy, then I got hit with a rock and knocked unconscious, Jadus escaped and end credits rolled. The only proper conclusion is that the Mandalorian drama should be done now that Heta Kol and Shae are dead, but I assume that the next expansion will begin roughly with Lana finding the unconscious player character right before we find out Malgus has escaped, the Empire wants me dead for screwing up twice in a row and Force sensitives are causing an uprising across the galaxy.
I also got this mail after finishing the mission:
A Galactic Emergency Alert of a security threat in all sectors of the galaxy. Yea, shit's gonna hit the fan. XD I always like the little world building or extra dialogue you get after doing certain missions via the in-game mail. I can just imagine the player character hearing the emergency broadcast alert tone and trying to act like they didn't just severely f*ck up the timeline.
I'm betting how this would have gone for a non-Force sensitive character would be You try to stop Malgus or let him use the machine (but without using the Force to block falling rocks above Malgus, ofc), and still getting knocked out. I think the story ends the same way no matter what, but whether you agree to let Malgus do his thing and whether your faction is royally pissed at you are the only variables.
Overall, I enjoyed this patch's story from a gameplay point of view, and it was ok story-wise. I'm just glad this story arch/expansion is over.
I gotta continue working on Captain Valy Nhumour's storyline so I know how republic/non-Force sides work for the story.
May the Force be with you all.
Let's hope 8.0 is more enjoyable (and finally free of the unfortunate issues that affected it's pacing)
