What would you do if you were scrolling through recommended tumblr posts and one was from someone you don't know and it was just a picture of your dad captioned "fucking hate this guy" and it had hundreds of notes
reblog it
It would depend which dad.... 🧐🫡

You are a deity newly ascended. Your predecessor has perished, and their domain (now yours) is in shambles. Instead of repairing it first, you went down to the world and did the dirty practical work instead of the grandiose, aloof things other deities do.
"Listen, LISTEN LINDA, i understand you really wanna storm into work and fire off a whole speech, i'm telling you its not worth it. Use your Common Sense."
I'm the god of common sense and there's only one of me and people wonder why i'm so rare a find....

Sucks how many people were taught that "horses put their ears back when they're mad" but then never taught the difference between "angry backwards ears," "mildly annoyed backwards ears," "pain backwards ears," "concentrated backwards ears," "sleepy backwards ears" and "just happens to be listening to something behind it."
"Horses put their ears back when they're mad" idk man i think it depends
These are all completely different expressions in completely different scenarios, and only two of them are decidedly negative.
Actually, I wanna talk about the third horse, the one putting its ears back in pain. Over the last 15 years veterinarians and animal scientists have worked out pain scales for most domestic animals by taking photos of the during routine procedures.
We know vaccines painful, and by comparing horses at rest with horses getting vaccinated, we've been able to determine how they express pain visually. By looking at horses with disorders like colic, broken bones, wounds, and so on, we can determine their facial expressions during more severe pain.
At zookeeper school we were drilled through the pain faces of the most common lab animals and livestock. Nowadays I believe this has become a routine lesson in all animal related fields, but the general public still doesn't know that this is a thing that exists.
Here are all the pain face/grimace scales I've been able to find. Please study them if you interact with any of these animals on a regular basis:

The woods at night are dark- perhaps too dark at times, what with all of the brush and overgrowth that dangles between the trees, both in the canopies and on the ground.
It isn't often that people will choose to venture so deep into such unknown territory at this time, and yet? There are those brave souls who can't help but let curiosity get the better of them.
For one brave soul who might find themselves wandering this late, the sound of clicking and the cracking of branches follows softly in the distance; not close enough to be alarming, but certainly not far enough to just be coincidence.
And yet, should the late-night traveler decide to turn around, the only indication of any other presence is a dim violet glow climbing between the trees.
She fluffed and her ears flapped as she stammered looking like a freshly airdried and washed sheep, "i-its no-just forget about it it'd be weird."
She had fancied some notion of shifting forms and wrapping herself around the larger man. He had gone to such lengths, a near stranger at first, to make her feel safe and welcome and she wanted to return that feeling even if she was not a fighter.
But the idea of being so intimately entangled with someone was also deeply startling. She hadn't wanted such with anyone before. "Ma-maybe i should have you do the markings tho; i don't have anything specific like Andal for titles or claimant achievements so it might as well be decorative. I am mostly just... white with bit of purple..."
Istala didn't fancy herself as particularly pretty or even pleasing to the eye. She was very graceful, sure, and even by her own measure a delightful personality and company. But that did not equate to beauty even if andal and aunt ardy had claimed otherwise. Everyone she'd know had wanted her for money or for social investment to some idea of a higher standing... she was nice, educated, and a deeply skilled empath, nothing but a pearl among many such back home.
---
Andal for his part had spent the last days working hard on toning his muscles and had gotten several good kills of deer and had traded the meats and rendered fat for other goods to make himself a leather vest to tuck over his crest and mane.
He wanted to go to the party, but was worried about brushing his crest constantly; istala had given him one of the panels of plain silk to thread along the inside of the vest and it had made it bearable.
When they left to make the final adjustments for tonight's excursion he went and found a spot to bathe himself. He winced, hissing between clenched teeth as the cold felt sharp on the blunted nerve fibers in his mane. Maybe one day he'd be used to it but every time seemed a fresh new pang of pain for some reason.
"Ah, well... I suppose there's always another time, then?" Grim said. His expression remained the same, though there was just a faint hint of disappointment in his words.
He had to acknowledge that no matter how curious he might be, he wasn't going to force someone to do something they didn't want to do... even if the concept of altering ones form intrigued him. To push someone to do something they weren't comfortable with? It would be practically unforgivable for Grim to do such a thing, he thought.
Still, once the topic changed back to the paint, they snapped back as though they hadn't been silently pondering Istala's words.
"Ah, umm.... well, luckily... markings are just natural to us... think like... a fingerprint in their uniqueness... I'd be honored to help you... come up with something! Although... I may have you pick out the colors you wish to use... I'm sure whatever the result, you'll be quite... lovely," Grim said, the corners of his wide mouth turning upward slightly. "I worry any work... I do would be insufficient in... doing you justice."
---
The day of the festivities was always quite lively, a day that Grim even preferred starting the day early, but it knew that the night was really going to be the more exciting part, at least in its opinion.
Carefully holding a brush in hand, Grim delicately dipped it into a small bowl of paint that had been painstakingly labeled "indigo". He had made the mistake of grabbing the wrong bowl far too many times in the past, so he had gotten Mordred and an artist friend to help distinguish everything.
As they awkwardly drew the brush around the black markings on their arms, they sighed. Painting markings on themselves was one thing, but they would soon have to treat another person as their canvas, which was far from an easy task.
"[Agh...]," He muttered in his native tongue. "[Is this really going to be as fun as I think it is...? What if they're simply... bored by everything? Or maybe everyone was simply playing along? Ugh, I don't know...]"
Still, he almost perfectly corrected himself when hearing movement from a few rooms over.
"Ah- is everything... going alright?"
"Well... i mean i'm not the same as any of you so?... so there isn't exactly a standard is there?" She pointed out cautiously, she was having a hard time sitting still for the paint to dry as it tickled greatly as it settled into her fur.
---
Andal grunted before making a proper reply "water was chillier than i expected is all. Nothing bad" he called back as he got to scrubbing. Istala had offered to help and he regretted not taking her up on the offer; if nothing else the water would've been warner for having another body in it.
"Nope... no such thing as... standards on our markings..." Grim replied, delicately dipping his brush once more and carefully painting some more lines, adding some occasional extra shapes here and there for some extra flair. "Well... that's not entirely true... symmetry is... favored in many regards... and simpler patterns tend to be more... overlooked compared to more intricate ones... but for outsiders...? Painted patterns are simply that. Nothing more, nothing less."
Grim spoke from experience. Their own markings, aesthetically speaking, were not one of the features others mentioned when speaking about their appearance. The jarring asymmetry of stripes along an opposing arm and leg, as well as the simple patterning was nothing special, really, compared to most of their other features.
---
"Should you need heat... I might be able to bring some coals...?" Grim offered, though it made no attempts to move right away, continuing to draw the brush gently along its arms. The bristles tingled along the sensitive skin, which only made the experience all the more unpleasant.
"Otherwise... I should leave you to it... but if you wish to join us, then you can find me..."
Istala managed to sit still for the rest of it and around the time she was done andal came out drying his hair still.
He gave his sister a once over, looked at Grim and raised an eyebrow with a smirk but said nothing. "You look good sis. I think you'll enjoy yourself tonight."
Grim simply nodded, satisfied with his work. He had done his best to be delicate with the markings he had painted on Istala, making them not too simplistic, but not so overly extravagant as to make her stick out too much. Careful swirls along her arms were painted with the utmost precision, a feat that he was quite honestly giddy about himself - Grim never saw himself as someone good at creating or going over patterns.
This was only further exemplified as he watched the other two speaking, grumbling unintelligible obscenities under his breath while he fudged another line along his arm.
"I do hope that... everything will be to both of your likings... it's not often outsiders come to take part, so... I believe everyone will try to go all out. Just... make sure to do as you feel fit, really..." He said, giving up on the single stripe he was having issues with and moving on to the next one.
Istala stopped fussing with he brother and looked at Grim. "Would you like a hand?" She was more than willing and he seemed frustrated with the time he was having which made sense with so many lanky limbs.

Nighttime was a lonely, quiet time for many. The world winds down to a stop, people leave the streets in favor of the comfort of their homes, even the animals quiet themselves to settle in for slumber.
Unfortunately, for someone like Erik Gordon, the silence was deafening and the darkness was suffocating. He never liked the night - it only meant he had to be alone with his thoughts, dark as they were most of the time.
So when he wound up in a quiet bar, a drink in one hand and a basket of fries in front of him, he was grateful for the dull chatter of the few inhabitants and the echoing of the television. It wasn't company (god knew his roommate was fast asleep and wouldn't go with him), but... it was something. Though, he didn't really think he wanted company in the first place.
The universe always had a funny way of messing with him, though, and his eyebrow twitched as he noticed the person staring at him from the end of his booth.
"... 's there something I can help you with, or are you just here to gawk?"
Ouros stared back, unblinking green reptilian eyes, then spoke quietly with only a light lisp. "I'm waiting on my sssssteak, you came after and got sssservvved fffirssst... I think i will quesstion the waiter..."
Those clear lids that naga all had slid over in a slow blink. He must be one of the more tropical varities if he was acting so sluggish in this tepid weather.
Erik simply shrugged, turning back to his table.
"Who knows? God knows I'm not a regular here, more like... an occasional if anything," he shrugged. "Could just be that one of these things takes a lot less time to do than the other, but sure. Whatever makes you feel better."
He didn't really mean to be dismissive (or at least, he didn't mean to be so passive aggressive), but the nights like these usually left Erik feeling nothing more than drained, bored, and maybe vaguely resentful towards a vast majority of the population.
"Izzat it, though? Or you just gonna stand here til the waitstaff decides to start doing the rounds again?" He asked, the slight edge to his tone not dulling in the least.
The naga cocked its head at him for the first bit, then hissed softly, low "consssidering mosst would avoid me by choiccce yess... yesss i do think itss neccesssary. Poor sssserviccce isss one thing... I do not care to trussst my temper much longer."
His coils shifted under him, bunching and looping over themselves, shifting to a more comfortable arrangement. That was when his stomach growled and the noise was somehow more startling than anything else. One long gurgling popping, whining noises that seemed to just rumble loose of his coils as they moved.
The next waitress to pass by him he did catch by the shoulder, the gesture utterly unpredatory, with an air of 'hey please notice me' that still made the girl jump and almost slap him. He seemed used to the treatment but did draw himself to height and asked in his best speech. "How much longer on my steaks? I know it was a large order, but they only really have to be toast-roassted?"
She stammered something barely comprehensible about food code safety and he sighed and let her go, reaching up to rub the heat pits along his lips with annoyance. Great, just great, so this was another one of those areas thats wouldn't give predatory customer reasonable requests. If he wanted to settle in around here he'd have to find a farmer, or maybe a butcher.
And then see if he was allowed to barbecue or not at his little shack-hovel he was renting.
Observing the exchange with almost... bored silence, Erik's eyebrow did raise slightly when he noticed the way the waitress seemed to... hesitate? Jolt? He wasn't quite sure...
Then again, most people weren't already accustomed to living with reptilian folk of ANY variety, so perhaps he was an exception to the rule.
"Sheesh... talk about customer service, huh?" He smirked, though his voice lacked any real humor. "I'd say i knew this place was bad about any real dietary accommodations, but this one's news to me..."
He stared again at the plate of fries and sighed. No, yeah, he definitely knew. Perhaps a bit too well. Granted... it was quite different when the dietary need included actual honest-to-god raw meat compared to just a bit of grain but...
He slid the plate over with a half-hearted shrug.
"I have a feeling you aren't gonna leave that easy, so here. Sides are bottomless in this place anyways so if ya want, take a snack."
He made a hissing rumble through his pits and gave a shrug. "Perhapss, maybe jusssst... off kilter... not many large naga here... not much chance for- mmm... adjusssstment." He seemed more disappointed by the waitress's reaction than hurt.
"Apprecciated, but too many grainsss will bugger the gut. A sssshaame... i do love the ssssssalt, but not worth the painsssss... and thiss hungry i might give them reasssson to find a bottom." A hissing chuckle as his tail tip slapped the floor a few times. "Do you know any cattle or meat farmerss in town? Would be cheaper; haven't had a chance to look m'self."
"Still, can't be easy having folks acting like that because you just have a specific need."
Erik may not have been able to perfectly relate - he was first and foremost a generic human. Most things by default catered to him. Still, he did at least have a passing familiarity with the struggles that having a tail alone brought, let alone it being half the body of a person.
"But no, I don't know of any farmers in particular," Erik said, shaking his head. "Or at least, not personally... I spend too much time in the inner part of things here to know about that sorta thing..."
He paused, a brief and rare moment of a probably good idea pinging in his brain.
"I do know a few guys though who might be able to give me some names. My roommate is a huge gym bro who also happens to cook so... theres that preference. Also know a guy who seems to know a guy for everything so..."
He snorted softly through his pits "aye, no, but cooked it just meansss more chugging water... i... hate ssslossshing around." It was hard for reptilian faces to pull an expression but he definitely seemed to make one of ardent disgust at the notion, lips pinching up along the pits before relaxing.
"I will, unfortunately, likely be back here in a week or sssso mm, here." He turned and slowly pulled out a buisness card from a pocket and slid it over. "I do barter tradesss as well." The card announced him as a licensed and proven rune mage with a mastery in something called 'life progressions' and an adept rating for generalized skills as well as elemental/naturalistic things.
"Fair enough... I more meant along the lines of he likes finding the quality shit, but it answers some questions all the same," Erik remarked, shrugging.
He picked up the card, regarding it with intrigue. He wasn't really well versed in anything mystical or magical, aside from what he picked up from various games or stories in his free time. But at least it was a number to call - avoided the awkwardness of having to ask for a contact.
"I don't know how much id be able to offer for a trade... maybe a free tattoo or something. But if I can get some info I'll send it your way. Whatever makes life easier, you know?"
He snorted through his pits in amusement "i'd be impressed if someone could put a tattoo to scales. That'd be a first to my knowledge. The favor of being able to plan a meal properly would be favor enough. I have a deep freeze and a butcher room set up in the garage. But the deer around here are only a 2 month hunting season and i'm not looking to break local regulations and laws, or, for that matter eat everyone out of a decent hunting season."
Erik gave a huff of laughter of his own, a low puff of air that seemed to shake his form briefly.
"Yeahhhhh, you really don't wanna fuck with the local wildlife commission here... I aint the outdoorsy type myself but I've heard some horror stories. Still, re: the tattoo thing, there's probably... some way to figure that shit out, but I'm probably the last guy who'd ever come up with it... but once I shake that info out of someone, it'll be sent to you asap. I aint gonna let another guy go hungry, ya know?"
"Itssss appreciated. Sssso, tattooing... musst be an interessting trade? Ssso many difffferent clientele?"
Finally the first platter of steaks came out. Were set down and the naga stared at them with utter distaste. They weren't even medium rare, brown the full way through.
"It sssseemsss i will be staying home thiss week. As i will be sssslosshing with damnable water weight." He sighed and started stabbing a fork into each steak and popping them much the way a normal person would eat a chicken nugget.... with significantly less chewing.
A pause here and there to go through several water glasses between each. The waitress finally caving enough to give him three glasses just so she didn't have to refill them quite as often.
Erik shrugged, not really feeling as though any answer he could give would be particularly interesting.
"I guess it's about as varied as most of your customer service type jobs... shop I work at tends to attract nerds and gamers in particular, which... honestly could be worse," He explained. His own tattoos, one of which wrapped around his arm, was a pretty good indication of his own typical audience. "Makes it a bit easier to chat with clients day to day when you share a hobby, yeah?"
Looking at the plate, he was filled with a strange sympathy (and familiar sense of exhaustion).
"Jeez dude... is every place you go as disappointing as this one seems?"
"It is a tossssss up the besst of days... this is better than being turned away." He shrugged philosophically; he was more bothered by the service itself than the quality of it. If a customer wasn't going to be harmed where WAS the harm in only *lightly* searing a steak for flavor.
"I understand food safety is different for everyone and fairly universal legally but i also know exceptions are made for reptile and amphib' folk because some of us flat can't eat cooked food. Though i am not about to go and catch a bug steak at the local frog grill..." he waved his fork a bit "not that its bad per se but it'd be almost twice the cost of this. I may splurge next time to avoid the hassle though."
He sighed hearing about the gamers "wish i could be part of such a hobby; alas they have yet to invent a screen *i* can read. Infrared is a blessing and a curse."
Erik nodded sympathetically.
"Damn, that's rough, buddy... both the price hike fer food and the lack of screen hobbies... you have to deal with grocery prices too for half the size of the regular or what?"
Probably not, he figured, but it meant he could understand - albeit only because of his own situation.
"Can't say a bug steak sounds too thrilling, though... unless they like... fried up one of those bigass dinner plate spiders, maybe... how would that even work, actually?"
"They uh, they farm mosquitos and ants and termites cus those have the highest protein and vitamin ratios and then they uh... send them through this kinda blender ish machine? And once it dries just a touch the stuff patties up apparently as readily as fish flaked meat." He shrugged "like i said tho; at my size they're rather expensive for a meal though." He added as an afterthought "i've also gotten a lot of complaints about the smell..."
He finished the last couple steaks and another liter's worth of water. "One of these days i'll get a buisness card but i best be skedaddlin' i got stuff to do while i sit this meal out. I'll call you when i'm out and about next."

To my understanding, American history isn’t really taught while saying all the colonisation/slavery stuff, at least in schools, meanwhile in other countries there’s a whole segment on “Oh yeah we were fuckin EVIL for a while, time to learn about the atrocities!”
is that correct or am I just not looking enough into American schooling?
Not american, but mostly correct from what one of my american friends have told me
yeah no, this is right. Uh, at least I have a teacher who’s real w the class and says “we also did x, y, and z to the other countries/people” instead of glossing over facts. I didn’t know about the Trail of Tears until literally 4 weeks ago. I wanted to cry.
American who is... kinda well versed in how social studies curriculum is taught? This is kinda based on my own observation and experience though, as well as what I learned while in college for social studies ed. I just wanna add a bit more context and info as to WHY we may not necessarily discuss this stuff because idk how much people actually know about those why factors.
It kinda depends on a ton of factors, such as curriculum by state/state learning standards, what level of history class youre taking (ex: AP US History versus Honors US vs Standard US), scheduling of the school year, type of teacher you have, and more, but im just gonna briefly touch on those first three.
Different states throughout the US actually have different curriculum and are required to teach (or not teach) specific topics more or less in depth. The example I learned was a sections of California versus Texas textbooks which I will put here
The original article discussing these differences more in depth can be found here (caution: its NYT so pain in the ass), but you can find similar articles when searching for differences between state textbooks.
As you can see, depending on the overall political leanings of an area, it can SIGNIFICANTLY impact what exactly students are learning about, whether by providing them with alternate ideas about a concept or by disregarding some concepts entirely.
More "high-performing" or "higher level" courses will also potentially go more in depth in certain topics. Like prev said, it wasnt until late that I learned what the Trail of Tears was in depth (I didnt really discuss it until my Junior year of HS when I took AP US, but my Freshman and Sophomore classes were also not history courses bc of my state curriculum at the time). Woodrow Wilson, for years, was just Some President we had to learn about who played a role in WWI, but it wasnt until my freshman year of COLLEGE that I learned how he actually fucking sucked a lot. College was also when I finally learned more about Vietnam and the Cold War in the US, compared to only briefly touching upon those topics in HS*.
There's also the way our school system is just designed in general, in which teachers are forced to put what should be two weeks worth of lessons into three days of slides and you really dont have the time to go in depth on a lot of things, so it becomes a game of picking and choosing what you can afford to expand upon with students.
Idk if any of this is helpful or coherent in any way, but tldr: both prevs are insanely right that things tend to get glossed over ESPECIALLY the horrific things that happen in the US (and some more in detail examples of that is a topic for another time), and a good part of that is how fucked up schooling in the US is in the first place.
Gonna tagalong on this bandwagon
*DEEP BREATH*
So back in the days i was in high school, in this the year of our torture 2014 in US History (aka one school year core course that covered (poorly) roughly 1800-1970)
I was reading a textbook from 1968... that said we (alaskans) lived in igloos without electricity, plumbing etc.
1968 most of anchorage was on public water sewer etc.
This was also the same class i was sent to the principal over using said ancient ass textbook to smack a russian adoptee who called me a 'crazy nazi bitch' (i'm actually half jewish???) for having a bit of damn pride in myself for learning german for my step family.
So like... to say the teaching and the books were vastly behind the times is an understatement.
