đˇđDionysus ; Bacchusđđˇ
Well known as the God of Wine, Dionysus is actually the God of:
His sacred animals and plants include:
Leopards - of which his chariot was pulled
Literally every giant cat tbh
And his other symbols include:
His Thyrsos (pine cone tipped staff)
Now⌠random facts time!
Dionysus actually has some pretty interesting origins depending on which myths you believe. Iâll tell you a couple. He has the nickname âtwice-bornâ for a reason, and there are a couple myths to explain this nickname. In an Orphic myth, itâs stated that Dionysus was originally Zagreus, a son of Zeus and Persephone. In this myth, Hera actually had the Titans kill Zagreus, but Athena saved his heart, and Zeus used his heart to have him reborn via Semele. â In another myth, Hera tricked Semele into getting Zeus to reveal his true godly form to her - killing her in the process, but sparing the still growing baby Dionysus. And in some cases Zeus then sewed him on to his calf to save him, and somehow had him grow and be born that way. Weird stuff.
Itâs also interestingly stated in the Zagreus myth that, the reason Hera had him killed wasnât just because she was jealous of the affair Zeus has, but also because Zeus apparently planned on Zagreus ruling the cosmos after him. Which makes sense when you think about it, given he is the youngest as was Zeus and Kronos.
Dionysus also had alot of caretakers in myths. Some myths say Zeus gave him to the second youngest, Hermes, to take care of him. Hermes then gave him to the Lamides, but Hera drove them mad and Hermes had to save him again. He then brought her to Ino and her attendant Mystis - but then Hera discovered him yet again so Hermes saved him again. Then according to myth, Hermes had had enough and tricked Hera by disguising himself as Phanes â ya know, Chaosâ twin, that powerful light deity â so Hera backed off and let Hermes take Dionysus to be raised by Rhea.
Dionysus is usually described as being fairly feminine, and this is because in some myths when Hermes had Ino & Mystis hide him, he instructed them to raise him like a girl as to avoid Heraâs suspicions. Obviously it didnât work, but it was a thing.
Thereâs a myth that states Dionysus was once captured by Tyrehenian pirates. He enveloped the ship in vines and summoned phantom beasts, and when the pirates jumped overboard and tried to flee he turned them into dolphins. I think thatâs pretty neat.
