batgurls, batgurls....whatchu gonna do
It’s kind of annoying seeing all these posts criticizing Birds of Prey as ableist for changing Cassandra Cain’s speech while jumping right over the racism in the way that she’s written as a mostly silent young Asian woman and also ignoring why Cathy Yan and Christina Hodson, two Asian female creatives, might desire to make such a change.
It’s kind of annoying seeing the same excuse over and over that you can’t have a disabled Asian character because it’d definitely be a stereotype. By this reasoning, real-life disabled Asian women can never hope to see themselves properly represented as fleshed out characters because their very existence is racist. Having an Asian female character who doesn’t speak much due to Orientalist exoticism like the Submissive China Doll or Mysterious Dragon Lady tropes is bad. Having an Asian female character who doesn’t speak much due to her struggle with language linked to her disability isn’t inherently bad; you can portray that respectfully. You gotta put in the effort.
The key isn’t to erase Cass’ disability. The key is to incorporate her disability – her dyslexia, her non-verbalness, her autistic traits – and still make her a complex character who also happens to be (E/SE)Asian without resorting to tired, one-dimensional tropes. It can be done. It has already been done.
Not to mention, if you’re looking for an ableist argument about BoP, the lack of inclusion of the woman who started it all is right there too.
Crimes Of Passion
Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon.
They need each other all the time, even if they're not in a romantic relationship. As a partner, or as a friend, whatever.
They always there for each other for no matter what. This is why I love Dickbabs, and why they are the best couple.💙💛

That's a cute pic, Commissioner

Just saw a casting rumour with Timothee Chalamet as Dick and Sophia ilis as babs and I have to say....NO THANK YOU
I mean..... it’s definitely not the *worst* casting rumor I’ve heard, especially if they’re going for making them younger. Both are competent actors and have a pretty wide range. Plus, they mostly look the part. If Sophia Ilis grew her hair out I think she’d actually be a pretty decent choice for young Babs.
