From about ninth grade though my early twenties I was madly in love with guitar. Before I knew how to talk to girls ( it's arguable if I do even now), guitar was my deepest love. I remember playing for 8 hours a day some weekends. I would look forward to playing when I was done with school and anytime I was alone. I would often play myself to sleep. When I didn't know what to do with myself after a breakup I would lose myself in guitar and compose a piece that sounded like I felt.... Nowadays I don't even think about playing and it feels foreign and unfamiliar when I do. My hands have forgotten many things that used to feel like breathing. I'm happy being a visual artist and not having to worry about performing in front of anyone but I shouldn't keep neglecting such a huge facet of myself. I had a helpful realization this week about my art. While I've been frustrated with my lack of time to work on it, I've not been taking inventory of what is missing when I'm not happy with what I'm creating. What I realized with BearFather specifically is that I broke a very simple rule of design far too early in it's conception - I skipped way to early into detail work. I've been chasing my tail for months and months in my off time obsessing over the flow and technique of his fur when what was truly missing was a solid foundation. I was never happy with the overall structure in the back of my mind but I always got side tracked on the detailed lines of his fur and hair and trying to preserve them. So what's the solution? ... I'm starting from scratch. Inside thirty minutes I sketched up a much more believable block out for a Bear which will not only be a better base to build fur on, but can also be the starting point for other pieces like The Kinship of the Bear, which has been requested many times. I may also push straight into making this into a ring design as well. One of the best insights I ever got on this subject was in a workshop with @tswittelsbach (who pioneered and made this type of workflow possible)... "Don't be afraid to throw your work away.
