The Mermaid Chronicles

I'm a mermaid. Not in reality, but in theory.

I dream of the impossible. I face surmounting obstacles. I even have trouble steadying my (perpetual) sea legs. Plus it doesn't hurt my case that Ariel is my name.

I'm a mermaid. Attempting to navigate the daily disappointments, unexpected surprises and humbling experiences that smack me in the face daily.

I'm writing to remember why I loved it so much a few years ago. I'm writing to draw a source of strength, to find a place to vent, and to create a space for thought and self-reflection.

I'm a mermaid. There are no tears for us, only tall tales and these chronicles.

I was looking for an interesting photo to insert into a blog post about the the state of  education in the United States and I stumbled across this. In addition to going to school, children in inner-city schools have so much to worry about besides Math and Social Studies.

And once again we tolerate the absentminded and supposedly "unintentional" use of homophobic slurs. It just is baffling to me that Kobe Bryant purports that, "The words expressed do not reflect my feelings towards the gay and lesbian communities and were not meant to offend anyone". Regardless of whether the slur represents your sentiments towards the LGBTQ communities, you should always be conscious of your words especially when you're such an admired public figure. Kobe do better.

Maybe you should be participating in the day of silence tomorrow.
