Nervous.
I’m gonna try to tell my parents this weekend that I want to baptized into the church. Yikes. Pray for me 🙃
I’m happy for you!
Ok so I’m going to make some points, and you may decide that these things aren’t a big deal to you. That’s great! I am merely pointing out somethings that I think you could keep in mind. Seriously if these don’t bother you then just like, go have fun! Enjoy the activities and the people and all of it! Being Mormon for me did come with fun memories!
However, as someone who was super devout, and was heartbroken when I left, I just have a few questions for you, not to answer but to think about.
1. The leaders are going to talk to you about sex, and if you are doing it. They will ask you in explicit detail, like are you masturbating, when are you doing it, how long, is it with someone else, what do you think about when you are doing it? I was asked these questions from about 13 on up. When you’re married these don’t happen, but even then you’re supposed to stay away from porn and all that. It might not matter so much to you, but I wanted to give you a heads up. Note: this will also happen to your children, and it’s looking like they are pushing to start the interviews at age 8 now.
2. They don’t accept any form of gayness. I know they act like it’s all cool, but when I came out as bi (I’m afab), I was told by my bishop that the lord was going to strip me of my sexuality in heaven, and I would be alone without my husband and basically become an empty shell. Another bishop threatened to put me in front of the council, which is basically a bunch of men deciding whether or not you need to be excommunicated. This is a big deal. My father was one, and he also told me that my bisexuality is basically me being a pervert and that he hates it cause it means I’m thinking about sex all the time. Note: this all happened after I did the “right” thing and got married in the temple to my best friend. I haven’t even told them that I’m trans cause I’m afraid if I do my dad is going to cut me away forever.
3. If you are a woman expect to deal with a lot of pressure to be a house wife. Also expect a lot of pressure to get married young. I wasn’t going to get married, I was going to wait until I was 26, but there was a lot of social pressure to get married, and do it fast. I love my husband, but looking back, I wish we had longer just dating. I got married at 19. I knew him for 6 months. We were engaged 2 months into knowing each other. This isn’t uncommon. Both of our parents were like this as well.
4. Make sure you look into tithing use. What are you really donating your money towards?
5. Last but not least, look into Mormon history. I was going to be a missionary, and I studied for it (literally I took classes in BYU-I for prepping me for a mission) they don’t tell you SHIT. just, look into it ok? It’s funny cause they had me do seminary, and I learned a lot there, but NONE of it was true to history. It’s really weird.
If all of these things aren’t a big deal to you, that’s ok! My husband loves the church very much, and he really feels like it’s the best place for him! Like honestly if it doesn’t bother you then I really do want you to enjoy your church experience! There’s a lot of fun things for youth and there’s a solid community and all that.
Just expect it to become cold when you become something they don’t “agree” with.
This gay’s out! Peace my friend!
Hey thanks for all this! You brought up some super rad points. Although I will admit this post is a year old now. I’m not in a place to be baptized soon because I am struggling with some personal life issues right now.
Also I am a woman but have NEVER felt the pressure to be a housewife (or to have children, although I very much want children), but I also don’t see an issue with wanting to be a housewife or deciding to be one. I am married and got married very young at 20. Unrelated to religion 🤷♀️ but I also knew my husband prior to getting married for 3 years. We have known each other for 6 years now and have been married for half of them. I am currently in school for Fisheries and Wildlife and everyone in the church that I have met have been wonderfully excited and supportive of me!
Maybe it’s been the area we live in Oregon. Maybe people are a little but more progressive. But I *knock on wood* have not run into these issues.
Also, I would like to say I am 110% an ally to the LGBTQIA+ and welcome anyone as they are, and want to be identified. I am supportive of them whether or not they want to be a part of the church. I know my husband feels this way, my bishop feels this way and anyone whose opinion truly matters to me, feels this way.
I am so sorry you have faced hurt in the church. That truly freaking sucks. And people who have treated you that way. Suck.
The bottom line is. Religion and church, God and faith are all essential to my life existence. I have been verbally and emotionally hurt by my previous church leaders, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the only church that I have felt like I truly belong to. The only church that has never hurt me and only showed me and my family kindness. Even if I haven’t returned that favor.
Friendly reminder for people asking how things went (and people wishing me luck) this post is over a year old now. I managed to tell my parents that I was meeting with missionaries, but never managed to tell them I was wanting to get baptized. Which is probably for the best lol since I ended up not getting baptized. I am not in a great place personally to decide on baptism or conversion. I’m not really even actively investigating the church as of right now. Just kind of hanging out and doing my thing. Thanks for the support and interest though!
Nervous.

Charles Spurgeon
Today I just realized again that all I need is God. No matter what happens, he is there to catch me. He is there - with his love, strength, peace, faithfulness, holiness - I can’t describe how beautiful it is to live in his presence. I can’t describe how thankful I am to have him and to belong to him. The moment I step out of his presence I am lost. But thank God, my shepherd always knows where to find me. I love you Jesus.
Have you read the CES letter?
Yes I sure have!
Also this has been asked like 4 times already 😂 no worries though.
Ok so uh I saw your blog in my recommended and so I investigated a wee bit and I am happy you are on your journey to find your faith!! I’m a member born and raised, and I really admire those with conversion stories. Converts’ testimonies really outshine everyone else’s, lol! Lots of love and support from a “pure-bred” member!! ❤️❤️
Thanks! I have met so many converts and they all have very unique and wonderful stories. That means the world!
Hi! I’m interested in learning more about the LDS faith and you’re investigating it too so I thought you’d be a good person to ask a question if that’s ok! How do you know the Book of Mormon is true and not made up by Joseph Smith? He used to tell his family stories of ancient Americans when he was younger so he could have worked on the story for years before dictating it as the BoM. Sorry if this causes offence - I really don’t mean it to and I just want to learn more about the faith 😊
Questions don't cause me any offense! I welcome all questions and all opinions!
That being said my strongest testimony is just that. My testimony. I have had the same question about the very same thing, I have prayed about it and have felt the spirit confirm to me that he was a true prophet and that what I read at fairmormon is true. Now that being said, this is my testimony, I recommend you read this from fairmormon:
The 1853 autobiography and the 1845 manuscript upon which it was based still exist, and both confirm that the "amusing recitals" mentioned by Lucy were done during the period during which Joseph was being instructed by the angel as he waited to retrieve the gold plates. Lucy Mack Smith said the following in her 1853 autobiography:
During our evening conversations, Joseph would occasionally give us some of the most amusing recitals that could be imagined. He would describe the ancient inhabitants of this continent, their dress, mode of travelings, and the animals upon which they rode; their cities, their buildings, with every particular; their mode of warfare; and also their religious worship. This he would do with as much ease, seemingly, as if he had spent his whole life among them.[1]
The quote from Lucy Mack Smith is used by critics of the Church to show how Joseph Smith told "yarns" about Native Americans "long before any golden plates had been found." The chronology found in Lucy Mack Smith's history, however, tells just the opposite story, and puts this quotation in its proper context. Lucy says that the angel Moroni told her son (during his first appearance) about the existence of the plates and informed him where they were buried (see Lavina F. Anderson, ed., Lucy's Book: A Critical Edition of Lucy Mack Smith's Family Memoir [Salt Lake City: Signature Books, 2001], 335-36). Lucy then states that Joseph (the evening after he had seen the Nephite record in their place of deposit) told his family all about "the plates" (ibid., 343).
Lucy Mack Smith: "From this time forth Joseph continued to receive instructions from time to time and every evening we gathered our children"
Lucy Mack Smith's account of her son telling "amusing recitals" about the ancient inhabitants of the American continent occurred during the years that Joseph was being prepared to receive the plates. The stories that he was telling related to information that he was receiving from the angel Moroni: These were not "tall tales" that he fabricated for his family's amusement.
From Lucy's 1845 manuscript, we read:
Now said he[,] Father and Mother the angel of the Lord says that we must be careful not to proclaim these things or to mention them abroad For we do not any of us know the wickedness of the world which is so sinful that when we get the plates they will want to kill us for the sake of the gold if they know we had <have> them...by sunset [we] were ready to be seated and give our atten undivided attention to Josephs recitals...From this time forth Joseph continued to receive instructions from time to time and every evening we gathered our children togather [together]...In the course of our evening conversations Joseph would give us some of the most ammusing [amusing] recitals which could be immagined [imagined]. he would describe the ancient inhabitants of this continent their dress their man[n]er of traveling the animals which they rode The cities that were built by them the structure of their buildings with every particular of their mode of warfare their religious worship as particularly as though he had spent his life with them...The angel informed him at one time that he might make an effort to obtain the plates <on> the <22nd of the> ensueing september....[2]
And pray about it yourself!
Just wanted to chime in and say thank you for sharing your journey of faith and investigation for the rest of us to learn from. You're a wonderful example, and I hope everything goes wonderfully with your baptism. I'M ROOTING FOR YOU!
Thank you ❤
Guess what? I meet with missionaries again on Friday! I'm nervous and excited. I'm pretty decided on being baptized at this point and literally the only thing in my way at this point is telling my family that I am getting baptized. I'm an adult now, I can do this. Right?
Provo City Center Temple (June 21, 2019)
at the very least, please read the CES letter. its a good source written by a man who at the time believed in the church, and it outlines some of the most obvious and clear inaccuracies with the church narrative.
I have read the CES letter before! Thank you for letting know.
hi, im sorry to butt in, but please, before you get baptized, please, please, please research church history (from non-lds) sources and think critically about what you're getting involved in. i know that telling you it's literally a cult isn't going to mean much likely, but please, spare yourself from the pain. ive been raised mormon and i cannot stress how much it has harmed me. please do your research. its not a good religion, and its going to cause more harm than good. please, stay safe.
I have been researching the church for 5+ years. This is not something that I have been doing willy-nilly. I have yet to be convinced of baptism for any church yet.
That being said, I do my best to find non-biased history on the church. I must say non-biased work is few and rare. There are either people who do or don’t believe in the church and bias is going to exist in either direction. The church has also given far more good than it has harmed. Even with my back and forth of the church and my very public disapproval of some beliefs. I have yet to have people from the church not support me or look down on me.
I will continue to think critically. Thank you!
if you’re serious about converting, you should read the CES letter by jeremy runnels. just a suggestion
I have read it! Thanks for the suggestion though!
I’M SO BAD AT THIS.
I keep coming back to tumblrstake and my tumblr account and then I dip out of here for another 6 months to a year. OOPS. Sorry y’all. Also. I have a TON of messages that I have just seen and will not have time to respond to them/ I feel awkward responding to 6+ month old messages. Sorry. I swear if you really want to chat, message me again and I promise I will respond!!!
Books, Baptism and Disapproval.
Well I'm pretty much decided to be baptized. In fact the missionaries and I have picked out a date for mw to work towards. (Which I will exlude until a few details are worked out). I took the step recently to tell my parents I was meeting with missionaries and they weren't happy, but the respected my decision and and thanked me for being honest with them.
I didn't tell them though that I am ready to be baptized into the church. I still am terrified of the conflict, I can handle the dissaproval, but I am petrified of creating a rift between my current amazing relationship with them.
I just keep praying that I can tell them soon enough. As for now I will just keep working towards my date.
☺️✨
