Art of growing Succulents🌵
Hey eXplorers, how's it going!
This week I thought of sharing a few tips on growing cactus based on my experience. Just so you know I have a very short life of attention span for anything , I guess that's what made me grow cactus in the first place. XD
If you're a newbie plant owner or just started the interest in growing , Cactus can be a great starter plant because it has the ability to survive in the times of your NEGLECT XD. Just kidding!
Even though we know Cactus 🌵 can be grown under direct sunlight, when we grow them domestically the conditions can be different.
They need to get enough sunlight but not too much. You can leave the plants in your patio, Shady place with a medium amount of sunlight, or if you're keeping them indoors, you need to keep them near a window where you can get enough direct sunlight.
Also remember when they get too much sunlight there is a possibility of getting sunburns. Yes you heard right! they get sunburns too. Check this picture right here on what happened when I move my plant to a direct sunlight for a long time.
Since the cactus have the ability to store moist in them you just have to water them twice a week. once would be fine too but if it's on sunny days, try watering it twice a week. Try to control watering during rainy days or do not water at all. :)
If you water them too much just like too much sunlight there is a tendency for the roots to rot.
Make sure the soil is dry before watering. Underwatering will also dry out the plant which will give out a pale look to the plant. So be mindful when you water them.
Check if the soil is dry just like the picture on the left before watering.
3. Potting , Repotting, Soil & Fertilizer. ♻️
Try not to repot them frequently. They do not need constant repotting. Let it establish before moving it to a new pot. For full grown cactuses it is advisable to move it every 2-4 years or as you see fit.
I would recommend plastic pots than the cement pots as they hold the perfect habitat for these plants according to our climate. Terra Cotta pots are recommended too.
According to my personal experience I specifically do not use any fertilizer, just the organic soil collected from my garden. According to my reading research it is favorable to use organic fertilizer with more phosphorus than nitrogen.
DO NOT USE CHEMICAL FERTILIZER.
❗ When planting Remember to use protective gloves because the spikes can cause unnecessary pricks. And you can use kitchen tongs to hold the plant if necessary. I use my garden scissors.❗
Even though you don't have everything figured out as a beginner do not worry, above tips should help to get started. ❤️️
If you have any tips or questions other than these do comment or send me a chat I will add them in the next post :D
