His voice sounds like that because he had firepox and he caught the disease in Ketterdam. He wears his gloves because of the trauma he experienced in Ketterdam. He is limping because of the injury during the bank robbery in Ketterdam. He had his cane crafted (by a fabricator) to help him walk but also to use as a weapon to survive in Ketterdam.
Everything people see when they look at him was birthed in Ketterdam, the myth Kaz Brekker.
Kaz Rietveld had a talent for card games and loved magic tricks but Kaz Brekker decided to take revenge and became a thief and a con-artist.
So he’s not lying or being over dramatic when he says that Ketterdam is his mother and he was indeed birthed in the harbor as he decided to live to avenge his brothers death.
