Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
went to see shang-chi again and I’ve decided that my ONLY beef with it is that when shang-chi tells Katie that he went through with the assassination, we see nothing of what actually went down. like that’s such a crucial moment to him and his character arc, plus we had just come off of a huge flashback sequence that was building up to that revelation, and the audience gets basically nothing. imagine how poignant it would have been if after shang-chi says “I’m not who you think I am” (or somewhere thereabouts) it cuts to him as a teenager killing the man he thinks killed his mom. it could have been such a messy, emotional scene, especially for a kid who we’ve seen being fairly reserved and timid. and then the part where he yells “is this what you wanted?” at Wenwu would have hit SO much harder.
but i feel like this way we could focus more on how shang-chi feels about this now. the flashback would've shifted our attention to the kid, but this way we got to see the kid through the lense of shang-chi/simu's acting and i thought it was really beautiful and i agree that it could've been a really great flashback scene, but i actually prefer it this way because the delivery was flawless and perfect in my opinion
Shout out to Katy for being the inner me.
‘My Mandarin sucks.’
Because same Katy, same.
i’m too tired to articulate this too much but one thing i really like about shang-chi is how they showed that the way shang-chi and xialing were treated by their father and how it traumatized them also affects who they became as adults, and how they kind of became opposites. shang-chi was the favorite child, the one who got all the attention, the one who had to train obsessively and live up to his father’s expectations. it makes sense that when he runs away, he becomes directionless. shang-chi was raised to eventually take over the ten rings. when that ambition is lost, he has no idea what he wants to do with his life.
xialing, on the other hand, the unfavorite child. the one who was ignored and cast aside. her line “If my father won’t let me into his empire, I will build my own” sums her character up perfectly. unlike shang-chi, she feels like she has something to prove. while wenwu’s huge expectations of shang-chi eventually led him to grow into someone who’s adrift, his neglect of xialing gave her a huge drive. it’s kind of funny how that happened.
shang chi and katy redefined the concept of platonic affection carrying as much weight as romantic affection and i hope more mainstream screenwriters release they don’t need to include a romance arc for a relationship between two people to be emotional, committed and worthy of hype.
