“I am all for immigration, but I draw the line at midwestern transplants” is one hell of a take.
“I hate how they don’t incorporate into the beautiful tapestry of my city. They have different social norms and I expect them to assimilate immediately and completely.” Do you hear yourself?
“This is not the same as anti-immigration sentiment I swear.” Uh well you’re wrong.
I want to fucking scream.
I was working on an essay about how states within the US have open borders with each other, and how this makes us an economic powerhouse, but apparently I was thinking of directing my essay at the wrong fucking group. God damn.
To summarize: Immigrants are good. “Transplants” (e.g. immigrants from another jurisdiction who have no legal barriers to said migration because they’re from the same country) are good. People being able to move to new places and live their lives there is good. I fully support people being able to move house wherever they damn well please. Always and absolutely. (Caveat: as in, buy a house in an existing settlement, not build a house in whatever random ass place they choose. Just in case anyone was misunderstanding.)
you know one thing people really dont appreciate about the movie hancock? it introduces the concept of soulmates. it explains that there are these immortal gods with superpowers who were made in pairs, meant for each other, but when they find each other they loose their immortality and become regular people without powers so that they can love and grow old together.
and then the movie concludes that actually no, they are much better staying far away from each other, actually having superpowers and being immortal is awesome, she already had a husband and a child anyway and she is not going to throw them away just for some guy who was supposedly “made for her”. and thats the happy ending!
tell me any other movie ever who had the balls to do that with the premise.
The issue with Hancock was the fact that it was two good movies smashed together;
The first half is a realistic portrail of how America would react to a Black Superman. Often cynical interpretations of White Superman cast it as a function of political institutions (Justice League Cartoon) or worshipping deification (Sack Snyder), Hancock says if Superman was Black then he would be treated like dirt. He did not grow up in a white (ashkenazi) idyllic farm, his memory starts with him exiting a hospital with no family or support and into homeless.
The second half of the movie is a beautiful sci-fiction piece about rejecting pre-determined paths that lead to self-destruction. In a world about finding purpose, the second half of Hancock says that the predetermined purpose is not always the best, and that the lives and purpose we forge are just as valid, if not more so, than the lives laid out for us.
I would love to see a Hancock remake where they split these two ideas into a first movie and a second movie to give both the time to explore. Preferably with young, up and coming black actors.
you can just say "person with ovaries." "an AFAB" makes literally no sense here, in addition to being grammatically nonsensical. sorry but this bleet has been pissing me off all day but i feel like if i reply to it i'll get it trouble.
a trans man who hasn't had any ovaries for 25 years isn't going to experience perimenopause in his mid-40s, so why include him based on a gender assigned to him as a baby? like... he was a baby.
like why bother acting like you want to be trans-inclusive if you're too lazy to recognize that sometimes, trans bodies aren't going to be the same as they were at birth when they got handed their baby gender
Hi I've been exhausted lately but I finally finished some Middle-Earth cane designs for Disability Pride Month and they make me very happy.
Click for better quality, zoom in please I spent way too long on these.
I'm a cane user, and most fictional or antique canes really annoy me, because they're rarely actually usable or practical. So this is my attempt to design usable but still interesting canes for characters I have somewhat arbitrarily projected disability onto. For example, they all have padded handles and most have wrist straps.
Individual design ramblings below!
Nerdanel has some type of genetic chronic illness, I haven't decided exactly what yet. Her cane has metalwork decoration, and a locking hinge mechanism to allow it to fold, because one of my canes is folding and it's super useful. Those parts were made by Mahtan. The Fëanorian star carving and crystal section were later modifications, and I think Nerdanel would continue modifying it throughout her life.
I've drawn Idril with prosthetic legs post-Helcaraxë, and some people with prosthetics use canes or other mobility aids for extra balance. I also headcanon that her silver legs were made by Celebrimbor once he ended up in Gondolin, so before that she may have had lower quality prosthetics and relied more on a cane. Hers has an eagle carved into it (Thorondor maybe), as well as eagle feathers, ribbons, and her heraldry for decoration. Elenwë's name is also carved closer to the base as a memorial (hopefully I did the tengwar right).
Celebrían uses a cane in Valinor due to her injuries. Hers is mallorn wood with metal decorations. Specifically the snake and flowers reference the House of Finarfin. The snake is made of mithril, which i think would be popular for mobility aid details due to its light weight. Also, she got Celebrimbor to help her make it after she dragged him out of Mandos.
Elros' is the only one without a wrist strap because I unfortunately couldn't work it into the design well. He uses it due to a leg injury from the War of Wrath, mostly because I wanted Elrond to encourage him about it in a fic I never finished. The handle is a carved and painted seagull, the column shows fish, and the base has Eärendil's star.
Caranthir inherited Nerdanel's condition, the only one of the sons who did. He didn't start using a cane until they were in Beleriand, so his is a from-memory recreation of Nerdanel's, made with Curufin's help. It also has metalwork details and a hinge. The textile wraps were his own addition, and the claw and beads were gifts from Haleth.
Faramir was born disabled with chronic health issues (again haven't decided exactly what yet), but this wasn't publicly acknowledged by Denethor as it didn't "fit the image". He had very little access to mobility aids growing up because of this. Injuries from the War of the Ring certainly didn't help, and he started using a cane after that. His was given to him by Éowyn, and was made in Rohan, hence the horse. The blue fabric band with stars is a reference to the cloak he gave her, and the lower band was made using remnants of Boromir's horn as a way for Faramir to carry his brother with him.
I tell this story all the time but I'll tell it again! When I taught kindergarten full time, we had a working bee one weekend where we did a bunch of gardening/landscaping in the outdoor area. One of the dads put up a bit of fencing, then stood back and had a look, kind of frowning like he wasn't sure. His wife then came along, and the following conversation ensued:
Wife: GETMO?
Husband: (after a moment, with a sigh) Yeah, GETMO.
Me: GETMO?
Wife and husband, in perfect unison: Good Enough To Move On
Absolutely LIFE CHANGING acronym, friends and enemies.

a ton of people have unexpectedly followed me over the last 2 days so here is my rent-lowering gunshot:
the american south is the most racially diverse and poorest region of the united states, and any political sentiment that treats the south is stupid or expendable is inherently racist and classist. a lot of y'all are racist and classist. the south is also the heart of american culture. argue with a wall. you cannot deny that everybody in the entire world does not emulate artists from atlanta. there is vested interest in keeping the south poor and uneducated BECAUSE this is the most racially diverse region in this country. if you actually give a fuck about progress, you would fight for the south, not mock us.
There’s a lot wrong with the US but watching the big evil terf lady weaponize UK libel laws so much makes me glad that it’s nearly impossible to sue someone for libel here
Watching UK people being legally forced to walk back tweets makes me glad I can say with no ambiguity that JK Rowling is an evil transphobic invader from Mars intent upon poisoning the minds of the youth with her evil brain mold laser
i find it very very telling that people immediately started going kiwifarms on gooseworx right after the final episode of tadc dropped on yt and the reveal that fan favorite character Jax has been a closeted trans woman this whole time, radically recontextualizing everything about her and her actions. everyone in the fandom has been completely fine with other queer representation in the show, even Zooble who is also trans representation, but i guess a complicated and flawed transfem is just a bridge too far.
i don't care about old social media posts that have coincidentally and mysteriously "resurfaced" following the outrage of transmisogynist fans. you clearly missed the part of this where Jax is reflective of Goose's past behavior of using edgy and harmful humor to play the bad guy and push people away in order to cover up the fact that she is a trans woman. you missed the part where Gooseworx has explicitly grown past that kind of behavior and Jax is an exercise in extending empathy to a past version of herself who was trying everything in her power to be uworthy of love and care. you fundamentally do not understand the art you are a fan of.
Gooseworx's ban by @staff is transparently due to harassment by transmisogynists attempting to turn her into a "controversial figure" for "ruining" their favorite edgy jokey rabbit "man" by revealing she's been an edgy jokey rabbit woman this whole time. i will block anyone attempting to justify this ban. i do not want those who would enable such an obvious transmisogynistic witch hunt to interact with me or my content. fuck off.
The old school lack of transparency on tumblr is amazing because you assume the people you follow must all be equivalent to you and then you see someone write “I brought my youngest to college today” and someone else write “my mom wouldn’t let me listen to Ariana Grande when I was a kid” and then your head explodes
honestly one of the best things we can do for ourselves is realize that people of different ages than us can still be the same kind of person as us. it's humbling and it gives everyone involved a sense of continuity, and it busts those stupid generational stereotypes media is so fond of.
It is useful for people to understand and experience the fact that people of all ages, from all walks of life, can be compassionate, wise, delighted with the same things you are, and also, on occasion, blisteringly stupid. Because that's humanity.
It’s amazing how trans women will experience a classic example of misogyny such as the objectification of women’s bodies and sexual organs and the violation of her privacy and personal bodily autonomy through upskirt creep shots which is a classic male misogynist act to commit against a woman and because she’s trans that level of sexual harassment will be considered acceptable because she’s “not actually a woman.”
Which is just a thin excuse because men by and large are not being subjected to strangers sharing photos of their genitals without their consent but it also wouldn’t be suddenly acceptable to sexually harass and violate someone because they are a man. Like any male misogynist, JK Rowlings is twisting facts about the woman she harassed into a justification for why it’s acceptable to harass her.
