And I just think Mary is extra avoidant with Dean because deep down she's extra afraid of his disappointment in her.

Like. She's already very avoidant. About her grief and loss when she was young. About her own death. About the deal. About her decision to become a parent (twice!). About her choice to pick the nuclear family mask. About the way it fit her so poorly. About how her death led to a childhood of abuse and neglect at her beloved John's hands for her kids. About how she couldn't save any of her loved ones successfully. (She doesn't yet know about the demons and angels' manipulation. I wonder if she would want to avoid that too). Alll of it. Always.

But Dean was her first kid. She named him after her dead mother. She was already kinda parentifying him before she died. She loved him. He loved her soooo much. She wanted to protect him. She only knows that he looks upto her and adores her and that she doesn't feel like she's able to keep up the mask of what she thinks motherhood is like. And she's so repressed in her core that she doesn't know how to express her care at all. And she's not even sure if she wants to, always.

So ya. I think she's really afraid of the emotional fallout of her failures as a mother. I think she's terrified that Dean will be disappointed in her and resent her and hate her. And so she avoids and side steps.

And ironically, her avoidance of her accountability is what makes Dean disappointed in her.
