Another reason Aaron despises Neil is that he probably thought that they were becoming "friendly"
Due to his and Andrew's deal, Aaron could only have family, no friends. That was Andrew and Nicky, then expanded to include Kevin, and then the next year included Neil (even added to the family phone plan).
Neil hangs out with the monsters; sits with them, goes shopping with them, goes to Eden's with them, etc. Aaron got a list of single Vixen's for Neil to try to help this odd kid out socially. They looked out for Andrew together; Neil kicked down the door and Aaron killed Drake. Neil didn't tell Andrew about Katelyn like Aaron asked. They bonded a little over not telling Dobson anything.
Aaron, who had a lifetime of bad friends who used him to then no friends only family, thought he and Neil were becoming buddies or something.
And then Neil used him. He meddled with Aaron's relationship with Katelyn for his own gain. Yes, Neil's meddling got Andrew and Aaron in therapy together and started talking to each other, but Neil still used him.
That betrayal had to hurt.

And that's in the EXTREMELY UNLIKELY event he doesn't insist on going with in the first place.

And not try as a threat, but as the cockiest challenge ever: try to hold Neil's attention for 5 minutes, try to ease his Andrew-obsession, try make Neil look away from Andrew when they are in the same room, try to make Neil stop taking a picture of every single thing that Andrew does because he will want to look at it later. try.

actually so upset we didn't get to see andrew's reaction to neil going "oh he's gay? so i guess him and kevin..." like andrew who has been ruthlessly attracted to neil the whole time and trying to ignore it only to find out neil immediately thought he was with kevin...the crash out would've been memorable...
i know it's not canon even though neil has his father's temper but imagine a neil with anger attacks. a neil that runs from the burning under his skin, from the fury that threatens to take him apart. a neil that has to smile for cameras after a hard loss, but is digging crescent moons into his palms the whole time and then slamming his locker a little too hard in the locker room and snapping at anyone who tries to talk to him and feeling so fucking guilty about the way they flinch away when he glares at them (does it make him another version of his father?) but not being able to do anything about it because the anger is under his skin and he can't get it out. a neil that breaks down quietly, fists falling on a pillow instead of someone he cares about, letting the anger burn him up and empty him out alone instead of letting it eat up anyone else the way his father did. a neil who hides it better than he's hid anything else because he has friends and a family and he cannot lose them to this last remnant of his father, but god, he cannot contain this much rage. a neil that, perhaps, contains the same infinite rage that andrew does, but shaped into a very different image.
personally I like to headcanon neil kissing andrew's knuckles and fingers with the love of a devoted knight and andrew pretending not to notice/care but it makes his heart flutter every time

Neil ending up with the Trojans instead is so funny to think about. He’d last half a day before texting his dad like, “This is worse than running. They keep asking how I feel. Come get me. I’m scared and I miss you.”
