Every time my PC’s desktop gets too cluttered, I move all the files into a folder called “old-desktop”.

In theory, this is a temporary measure to set the files aside for later tidying up.

In practice, my “old-desktop” folder now contains a folder called “old-desktop”, which in turn contains a folder called “old-desktop”, and so forth, each layer representing successively older desktop strata I have yet to sort through.

The deepest layer I’ve inspected contains files with last-modified timestamps of April 2004. (Note: not a typo.) There’s a very high likelihood that I’ve been putting off cleaning them up for longer than some of the people reading this post have been alive.

Nah, this machine is only a couple of years old. I just copy everything over into the appropriate spots each time I upgrade. The aforementioned files are by no means the oldest ones I’ve brought over in this way – they just happen to be the oldest ones on my desktop.

For the curious, the oldest file on this computer I can confidently put a date to (i.e., because I authored it myself, rather than copying it from elsewhere and potentially carrying over a previous author’s timestamps) is what appears to be a 3D rendering of a military vehicle running over an accent chair:

This one is timestamped January 1997.

(I didn’t create the models; if I recall correctly, they’re stock assets I obtained alongside a pirated copy of Caligari trueSpace, which is also the program used to perform the rendering.)
