The Irrational Man

"Ruin is the destination toward which all men rush, each pursuing his own best interest in a society that believes in the freedom of the commons..." 1968 saw Garrett Hardin publish a paper entitled the tragedy of the commons in which he described how the inherent logic of the commons brings ruin to all. The rational man seeks to maximize his gain and is locked into a system which compels him to increase his share in the commons without limit - in a world that is limited. Therefore it is the irrational man who seeks to remove himself from the system so that he can change the destination of men.
