This is an absolute religious experience that I was not prepared for
Whoever did the caps for this deserves an award
Can never not reblog this, a Scottish national treasure 😂
So I looked this up and the whole story is wild.
Basically, market research for japanese bakeries determined that a) they sell more breads and pastries the more different varieties they have, and b) japanese bakery customers prefer items which are not wrapped, because individually wrapped things give the impression of being like, preserved or something instead of fresh and good I guess? So the obvious solution is to sell as many different kinds of unwrapped breads and pastries as you can.
But! In actual practice, that’s a nightmare. No packaging means no barcodes to scan, so the cashier needs to know all like 200 different (often very similar) items by heart and add them up manually, which means training new employees is a slow and painful process and customer service in general suffers badly. And having a person handle all those un-packaged foodstuffs to count them or examine them, in addition to being slow and clumsy, is unsanitary as fuck.
So one bakery chain owner approached this computer guy in 2007 asking for a system to automate the checkout process. It took five years and the company barely survived a financial crisis in the middle, but long story short they developed a highly specialized AI that will look at the pile of bread a customer picked out and automatically identify everything, tally it up, and charge them correctly, while the live cashier is free to make small talk or help people out or whatever. The whole process is simple, fast, sanitary, and pleasant for customers and employees alike, and to an outsider it looks like fucking magical bullshit.
But then in 2017 a doctor saw an ad for this bakery scanning system and it occurred to him that cells under a microscope don’t look all that different from weird loaves of bread. And it turns out that yeah, you can use almost all of the same code to analyze a tissue sample and pick out any potentially cancerous cells in it. Other people have started buying the same program for everything from analyzing the readout from big physics experiments to labeling charms and amulets for sale at shrines to detecting problems in the wiring on jet engines.
THIS.

Newly Released Police Body Cam Footage Shows Moments Before Rayshard Brooks Was Murdered by Police
For those who don’t know, Rayshard Brooks, 27 yr old father of, was shot and killed by an Atlanta police officer at a Wendy’s parking lot in Atlanta Friday night.
In the video, Mr. Brooks is seen calmly and politely speaking with Officers after falling asleep at a Wendys parking lot because he said he was “Too intoxicated to drive.” The officers could have done the right thing and stayed with him until someone picked him up, allowed him to walk to his home (which he offered to do) or even offered him a ride home, but instead they decided to escalate the situation and kill him.

Mobs of angry white people, protesting for their right to [checks notes] get a haircut—in the middle of a pandemic—yelled at cops, shoved them, threw things at them, and were nowhere near being respectful or peaceful, but for some reason, police officers didn’t mace them, didn’t shoot rubber bullets at them, didn’t tear gas them, and didn’t kneel on their necks and choke them to death. Qwhite interesting how differently white people are treated even when they disrespect the police and even when they riot over things like [checks notes again] their sports team losing or hell, even winning a game.

I’ve barely seen anything on tumblr about the blackout in Washington DC
There’s been radio silence from the city since 1am local time, tweets about it are being deleting and suppressed
[edit to add: there’s now reports coming out that the blackout was fake, I can’t confirm either way, be vigilant]
It’s not even about actual white supremacists. We know what to expect from them. It’s about my fellow “nice white people” tolerating or approving of both behaviors.
There’s an update 😊
“It was not my intent to clean a shelf that was not going to be refilled. That’s not who I am.” But that’s exactly who he is. He regrets it now because of the repercussions but this man really was trying to capitalize on people’s health concerns. He really tried to, and did, make it harder for people to get essential hygiene products during a national emergency. This man put people in danger to make a quick buck. This was evil. They really shouldn’t have brought his wife and kids into it but him? Fuck him.
Saying he donated the hoard is a complete misrepresentation. First of all, what Matt Colvin had done and was doing was illegal. The KY AG opened an investigation for illegal price gouging.
Matt wouldn’t answer the AG”s calls, so the AG located the storage unit where he had been keeping it all. It was at this point that the AG ‘facilitated the donation’.
It is very clear that Matt Colvin was not intending to cooperate with the AG until he had no other choice (and likely faced arrest).
Everyone: Price gouging limited supplies during a state of emergency is illegal. That includes individuals and businesses. If someone is charging 10x the normal cost of hand sanitizer, soap, toilet paper, anything that’s currently hard to find: you can report that to your state attorney general’s offices.
Well that was unexpected
this is like the 10th time I’ve seen a sex toy-seeming thing turn out to be a magical girl transformation device

Hello, college grad that actually wrote an award winning paper on this topic! Here’s some knowledge I’d like to share: There’s actually been studies as to why it’s usually white kids, a large conclusion amongst the criminology community is that those that often have more privileged lives (white kids in our society’s case) are less adept to dealing with stress and denial. Whereas minorities and others are more likely to cope and function normally despite stressors because of the constant stressors that come from systematic racism and/or other platforms of more limited priviledge.
TL;DR: It’s usually a white kid because their privilege incacipated their ability to learn how to handle stress/ denial/ whatever without acting out. The less privileged are done used to the bs and thus typically dont turn to extreme measures as coping mechanisms.
EDIT: I had reblogged this and added a link to the paper (which I should’ve done to begin with,) but it’s probably best I just edit my original reblog and add the link (which I also should’ve just done already.)
Anyway, it can be found fully sourced here.
