Reading a paper ("Beyond a Pet - contextualizing natural behaviours and welfare challenges in Domestic dogs") and this hit me like a ton of bricks
"Humans have arguably pulled on the genetic strings of dogs to such degrees in these cases that the animals are effectively involuntary canine puppets of sorts, exhibiting behaviours which not only lack adaptive benefit but may even reduce fitness as a matter of standard" (pg. 5)
Which I already knew for physical issues, like pugs for an extreme, but had never thought of for behaviour traits. The example given in the paper is the gameness of terriers who famously don't black down from fights, even when the evolutionarily smart move would be to conserve energy.
"Providing for the expression of behaviours the animal may be highly motivated to perform is beneficial in reducing distress and frustration; yet the engagement in those behaviours may assume a cost for the animal - particularly when certain rewarding activities foster vulnerability to behaviour addictions ." (5).

people who use "cat person" and "dog person" as though they are describing two opposing sides in a war are very tiresome to talk to for me. and the same for anyone who assumes a personal preference Must Necessarily be a statement of supremacy. TIRESOME!
Phenotypic Variables: observable traits of characteristics of an organism that came vary among individuals, influenced by both genetics and environmental factors (sporty)
Genotypic Variables: different genetic makeups or alleles present in individuals or species (blue eyes)
Allosteric Reconciliation: the process of restoring balance and health in the body after experiencing chronic stress (allosteric load/the wear and tear from prolonged stress exposure). It emphasizes the need for recovery and adaptation to reduce the negative health impacts associated with sustained stress responses.
Perturbation(s): a small change in a physical system, or more broadly any difinable system (such as a biologic or economic system) - other definitions specific to orbits of planets and other celestial bodies.
Syanthrope(s): a wild animal or plant that has adapted to live near humans and benefits from the environments created by human activities (house mice).

Yesterday Ianto got hurt on our evening walk.
Tl;dr: my service dog was hurt while playing followed by a bus driver who was wrong. If you have any spare change, please buy us a treat https://ko-fi.com/theleinerotraining
More details and non-graphic photos under the cut.
At about 5:30 he was jumping off some play equipment and broke his toenail. I was with my partner and Klaus, luckily my partner had his phone and wallet (where I had only some zines I'm working on in my pocket and a handkerchief)
He called the closest vet and booked me an Uber pet, got Ianto and me in the car then took Klaus home before grabbing a bike and my phone to come meet us.
I was terrified that Ianto broke his toe bones, but luckily the doctor explained it was "just" a bad toenail break - right at the base.
He had to be sedated to have it removed safely.
By the time he's situated in the vet and we can walk home with the bike it was well after 6pm. When we got the call at 7:30 that he was ready to go home (earlier than expected) I had to grab another Uber to the vet.
Ianto, silly goofy Ianto, was still quite wobbly from the meds. We were sent home with 5 days of pain meds and an appointment on Tuesday to get his bandage removed. We walked 2 blocks up to the bus which would take us 3 stops to home. I had his best on me and he was in a cone with a bandage on his paw.
We got there about 7:55-8:00pm. The bus driver then attempted to refuse us service which turned into a whole ordeal. Historically I would have just gotten off the bus and walked the 6 blocks home, but Ianto could not have made that walk. So I stood my ground. He ended up calling his supervisor and transit cops on us (about 10 minutes after I requested he call his supervisor lol, I know the laws).
That whole shitshow took another HOUR but I had no way to get home otherwise -Ianto couldn't have loaded into a car to Uber he was too out of it.
In the end, the bus driver was informed he was wrong, he wasted so much time I had to get off and on the next bus anyway. And I didn't sleep until after 2am. Poor Klaus was very distressed.
My dog emergency fund - sorely low after the last year without work - only had half the cost in it ($353.55) and the rest was put on card.
If you have $2 Canadian please think about donating to our Ko-Fi that I just set up.
I wanted to add an update on this post and give my heartfelt thanks to those who have donated.
Without your help it would have taken me months if not all year to get to the point we are at now ($350, right where we started lol). If you have anything more to give, my goal is $500 for the doggy emergency fund. But I am putting my private client's payments into it as well as my small savings from work, so we will get there.
Ianto is feeling much more himself, he doesn't have a limp or a vet wrap on anymore - though his toe looks pretty bad still. No infection and no further scaring me!
As I suspected, he's not willing to get back up on the equipment he was on at the time but isn't averse to getting on other things (bleaches other play sets).
We are keeping him out of the dog park until his toe heals some more, but he is happy to run around the baseball diamond. I have a few more photos under the read more. Again, not graphic but use your discretion anyway.
He currently only has to wear a sock if he won't leave his toe alone.

re my "read books that make you feel stupid" post: reading books you don't fully understand is probably the safest way to push yourself outside your comfort zone. you don't have to embarrass yourself in front of anyone. you can do it from your cozy bed. you can easily get help from book clubs or literary analysis online. you can go as slowly as you want. there's literally no risk.
Doing this with dog ethology papers. Google open for definition checks, someone to read to if I'm stuck moving forward, and help with understanding the math.
One of the most heartwarming things Iāve ever heard a dog trainer say āA pushy pet who makes small demands and communicates their needs to you is a safe pet. It means they trust you and arenāt afraid of your reaction if they misbehave and push your buttons a littleā

Taking a page out of @grey-and-lavender and making a post with the definition(s) of words I don't know as I progress my study on dog ethology:
Glucocorticoids - a class of corticosteroids which are in turn a class of steroid hormones. They bind together with the glucocorticoid receptor present in almost every vertebrate animal cell. The name is a portmanteau of "glucose" and "cortex" and "steroid". They are part of the feedback mechanism in the immune system.
A substance measured in the stool that reflect levels of stress hormones like cortisol produced by the body. A non-invasive research tool utilized often with wildlife.
Also known as Androstenolone is an endogenous steroid hormone precursor. Functions as a metabolic intermediate in the biosynthesis of the androgen and estrogen sex steroids
Edit: word phrase was cortisol:dehydroepiandrosterone, which is often just called cortisol in the anxious community. Cortisol spikes being an indicator of stress/anxiety.
The probability that two alleles randomly selected from a population will be different. Indicator of genetic variation (COI?) population health and used often in conservation biology.
