Hello from your friendly neighbor lotr enthusiast who has been stuck in thilbo hell for the past five months! I’ve finally given into the urge and decided that or our fandom needs more organization… so voila! One account, one anon, and lots of fics to help appease you guys as well as myself.

To be honest I don’t have a whole bucket load of experience with tumblr so I’ll be learning from trial and error for a quick minute here, so bear with me.

First and foremost however, it does seem prudent to lay some ground rules for what I will and will not rec.

1. Durincest… or like any incest between any of the dwarves that are closely related (I might be willing to do Dwailin/Thorin if you ask nicely)

2. Pippin/Merry…. Sorry guys but it’s similar to above. They’re related in Tolkien canon so I’m just not comfortable with that.

3. Pure smut. I just-no. Just no- it’s not my cup of tea, it’s fine if it’s yours, but it’s not mine. I will rec fics *including* smut. But not fics that are purely smut.

4. Fem!BilboxThorin. Something about this really irks me. Will I rec gender bent versions of ships? Absolutely, if they’re both gender bent. Just not a genderbend to make a ship straight. I just don’t like it.

Notes: I love this fic with all my heart. While the context of determanfidd's epic of a fic (sanskuh) definitely enhances the story and adds to the worldbuilding you absolutely do not have to read it to enjoy this story. Bottom line: Gimli's nephew falls in love with a hobbit. It's awesome.

Flowering Stars and Dragon Fire by Prince_Ofluff

But as Bilbo slowly becomes part of the company he realizes there's more about dragons that he's ever known, and when he see's how far Bilbo is willing to go for them it changes everything.

Time itself will bend to see these two together.

With guilt eating him up and worry of the future gnawing at his bones, Bilbo sets off for the March of Erebor. He can only hope he won't fall for a certain dwarven king on his way there... again.

Aragorn is running for County Sheriff on a platform of community policing - but he's running against his boss. Eowyn feels trapped in the family business, and thinks the handsome young motorcycle cop is her ticket out. And Gandalf is selling his fireworks, like he always has, even though there's no way they should be legal.

The story of a town, and the people who want to make it better, and what happens in one tourist season.

Notes: This fic is so unique in my opinion. Like it's a modern AU, but the setting is so...different? It's a special fic, but I will say that I have to be in a certain frame of mind to read it.

Mates, Marks, Souls and Such by Lumeleo

Series! Part one summary:

Hobbits, Bilbo finds, have an exceedingly simple way of finding their soulmates: You fall in love with who you will, and once you both feel the same, you'll get your marks. Dwarves, in typical dwarven fashion, do everything backwards, getting their marks first and then trying to find the matching one. Really, he's quite content to be courted by Thorin, who has no mark at all.

Kíli has no mark, either, until they come to Mirkwood, and things get needlessly complicated. Because of course elves do things yet another way, as though Bilbo didn't have enough of a headache already.

Of course, there's also the ultimate question: how to tell about your pregnancy to a partner who is not only gold-mad, but also doesn't believe in the existence of illegitimate children?

Notes: AHHH! Classic! And a classic for a reason. Soulmates at its best. Read. It.

The Long Way Around by hope91

Along the way, Gimli is reminded of the finality of separation from his dearest friend – and eventually realizes he can deny his heart no longer.

Notes: Awwwww. Although the Barduil is more setting than plot it is still so sweet and the gigolas is top tier.

Beneath the Mountains Music Woke by EmilianaDarling

Rarepairs for When You Wanna Switch it Up

Woah, it's been a while since I posted, but I still haven't stopped reading tolkienverse fics, so I have a large backlog of fics to recommend. It's just the matter of getting them on a list and to you guys that's the trick...For your sanity I encourage you to consider this blog all but retired, even though I am going to try to get out the lists that I've had in the works for a while.

This list is basically what it says: rarepairs. Except, rarepair doesn't actually mean that the pairings are all that rare, just that the central pairing isn't Thilbo, Gigolas, or Barduil, since that's what I recommend the most of!

Spaces Between Us by Linguistic Jubilee

Thorin pauses. “You have to understand that what I am about to say is so uncomfortable for me that I would almost rather fight the white orc again than continue, but. Dis. You must be blind if you cannot see that Dwalin stares at you the way you stare at him.”

Notes: Ok. So. I love Dis/Dwalin so much. Like I'm not even sure entirely why, but I adore it. This fic especially kinda like encapsulates all the lovely feels of the two of them and I think does really well by both characters and is just so worth reading. Even if you're initially iffy on the ship idea, give it a shot, you won't regret it. Also, mayhaps be looking at a whole Dis/Dwalin post in the future.

In Loving You With My Whole Heart by Lapin

Notes: This fic guys. It's just. So cute. And I love the Ori centric POV. It's desperately romantic and angsty all at the same time. I want more.

Fear and Family (Or, the One Where Kíli Is the Sensible One) by Lumeleo

After the Battle of Five Armies, Bilbo isn't sure of his welcome in the mountain, and thus returns to the Shire as soon as he can. Somewhat to his surprise, Ori goes with him -- but it turns out Ori has his own reasons for leaving Erebor behind. Well, Bilbo's quite used to being the talk of the Shire.

The line of Durin might suffer of thick skulls, but fortunately Kíli is less stubborn than his uncle and brother, and decides to fix things, even if that means taking his newlywed wife for a ride all the way to the Shire and beyond. Of course, he doesn't yet know what he'll see there -- but he does know how to fix things. Even if it means giving up his claim to the throne.

(Let's not kid ourselves -- that's his favourite part.)

Notes: This is a bit of a fandom classic, tbh. I think that Kili is, tbh, the best part of this fic. He's so fun to read and I love the relationship between him and Tauriel (ofc) but also between him and Ori and Bilbo. The bond between Bilbo and Ori is also perfection.

One Hit by littlebrownshoe (Wolfy_Tales)

Dwalin was so busy making sure Thorin understood the gifts Bilbo graced the king with that he did not give much time to think over the items Ori gave him. It took the scribe giving Dawlin a punch to get him to finally realize.

Notes: Awww, Dwalin. That's how I felt for most of the fic, though sometimes it became an arghhh Dwalin instead. Definitely worth reading.

Notes: DORI!! He's so cool. So protective. So traumatized. I love him. And how much he cares for his brothers. Their relationship is explored and discussed in such a lovely way in this fic and I <333333 it.

I’ve Been Looking for You by Resacon1990

It starts on the wrist when you're young. The first words your soulmate will ever say to you are tattooed in a colour, red, green, yellow, blue, any colour each with their own meaning, and the day they're said and the moment you touch your soulmate is the moment they travel up to settle on your forearm.

Five stories, five different bonds, five endings.

Notes: This fic I read a long time ago, but I remember enjoying. I believe that it follows each pair in it's own chapter which is cool. But it also has a lot of interesting discussions about soulmates and almost the impracticality (???) of it, or the ways in which the system is imperfect.

A Perfect Match by Chamelaucium

Notes: This is a classic trope. Almost the reverse of the Dwalin trying to get Bilbo and Thorin together fic from above. Def worth your time, a sweet little thing that just makes you feel fluffy.

In Carven Oak by bubbysbub

It's Yule time when Bilbo arrives back in the Shire- with a host of Dwarrow at his back, the sentimental lugs. Except now the assorted Aunts and Uncles have gotten quite the wrong idea in their excited interrogation, and he's stuck pretending that he's married a few of the hairy fellows.

If he could just get through the assorted required Baggins and Took social events without outing himself as a complete fibber or drunkenly attempting to kiss Dwalin and Thorin under the mistletoe, it may just be a Yule miracle.

Another attempt at writing a common trope fic that went completely off the rails.

Notes: Ok so I know this is still technically Thilbo, but it also includes Dwalin who is epic. I really love how casually the polyamory is treated in this and I think that it is a great introduction to polyamorous ships in fanfiction if you're curious about it.

Heavy with Many Burdens by moonbeam (luvsbitca)

Bilbo leaves Thorin and the company following Thorin’s words before the BoTFA unaware that he is taking more from their relationship than a broken heart. Months later Dwalin finds Bilbo in need of help in the Shire when he is delivering Bilbo’s share of the treasure. He remains in the Shire unaware that he is leaving Ori behind in a precarious situation.

Notes: This is such a sweet fic with Dwalin and Bilbo's relationship especially feeling particularly special. Poor Ori and Thorin, though. It all ends well in the end, though!

Back in My Right Place by frodomybeloved (rosequartzstars)

Hello! I'm looking for this bagginshield/thilbo fic, where they still went to do the quest to reclaim Erebor, but then Bilbo and Thorin already have a history because they had a one night stand in Bree long ago? I'm so sorry I've opened to many bagginshield/thilbo fics that I want to read, and at this point im not sure if this was a premise I've read in the summaries/fic rec posts or sumth my head conjured up T__T

If Bilbo had spent less time ogling Thorin in the forge, and more time watching his footing, this would never have happened. _____ Bilbo nodded, backing away. He still felt a little flustered, and he was sure his face was red as a beet. 

‘Try not to get lost again,’ Thorin smiled.

‘I’ll try my chest – best! I’ll try my best!’ Bilbo could have kicked himself over the blunder, but as it turned out he didn’t have to.

Thorin’s face transformed from an infuriatingly knowing smirk into a look of panic. He reached out with a hand, stepping forward quickly, ‘Bilbo, look out!’

Especially if you’re into thilbo, gigolas, and the like. It’s truly one of my favorites.

I feel like a lot of authors struggle with writing dwarves, Fili and Kili specifically, because they’re not sure how far to take their childishness. For this environment I think Fili was done particularly well, even if it’s not how I would view him in other situations. Btw gigolas.

It’s thilbo centric and modern day au with secretive Thorin, and Smaug has already been taken care of so that’s not a second hand stresser. It’s just lovely overall with the way it present all of the company and Frerin is alive, which is always nice. And mini Fili and Kili. Bro I’m in so deep with this fic, but that’s how it goes ig, lmao.

Notes: Nwalin focused, with a side of Fiori and Thilbo. I can't ever decide if I like Dwalin/Nori or Dwalin/Ori more. Maybe we should have a vote... But either way, I love this fic, especially since it highlights two characters that don't typically get the limelight (also baby dwarrow).

The hobbit doesn’t look at Thorin, too busy thumping Balin on the back. Once the dwarf seems able to breathe again, he looks up, to find thirteen wide pairs of eyes fixed on him. 

“What?” he says defensively, though he’s not sure what he’s defending.

“You’re how old?” Kíli squeaks. 

Bilbo frowns at the young dwarf. “I’m fifty years old. Well, fifty-one, come springtime. Though it is not very polite to ask someone their age so bluntly,” he tells him primly. 

Fíli makes a choked sound, and Nori lets out a vicious string of swears in Khuzdul.

Notes: CLASSIC ALERT. All I can really say about this fic is that if you haven't read it, that's a crime, and you must. This fic is a gen-you-ine staple, and I adore it. Thilbo.

Thorin had to choose a consort. He knew that, and he also knew he didn't want a consort that was not the Hobbit. He doesn't, and instead stubbornly waits for a sign that the Hobbit himself would be willing to be such. Bilbo in turn, knew he was more than a little envious of those that got the chance to present themselves in front of the Dwarven King, and that he was more than a little relieved when time after time, they were kindly rejected. He also knew that if he was being really honest, he really wanted to take on the spot himself.

Notes: This one's another classic and I love it too much to handle sometimes. The pining is lovely and it ends up so happily, and I just love it so much.

The Fine Print by airebellah

Ultimate Gigolas

Long time no see, ey? Well, I'm back... at least for now, but I'm very excited to deliver this rec list! You all know that I'm a sucker for Barduil and Thilbo, but gigolas just hits different ya know? I tried to assemble a list of fandom classics as well as some lesser known ones that you really need to check out.

I Walked with You (Once Upon a Dream) by The_Dwelf

He is Gimli's reicarnation, he has been dreaming of his past life since he was a child, and now that he's old enough to leave Erebor, he's certain of his condition. With unexpected help from a very shocked Elvenking, he will find a way to rejoin Legolas, at any costs. Angst, fluff, porn and (spoiler?) a happy ending. 

Notes: I would call this fic a lesser known classic. I've read it more than once (I've read most of these more than once) and it never fails to entertain. Maybe it's not my absolute favorite, but it's definitely a must read.

On the Origin of Half-Elves by Lumeleo

Legolas has found his mate, but that doesn't always guarantee happiness. Especially not when his dwarf still holds a grudge over old insults.

Of course, even when they start to get along, things aren't necessarily easy when rumours from the Misty Mountains make Legolas ride out to look for his lost brother... and ends up with a party of dwarves following him, because you can't ever have just one dwarf.

Now if only he can get through the adventure without any angry relatives taking an axe to his vulnerable parts.

Notes: This story is sweet. I really like Legolas and Gimli's relationship, but if I'm being honest I typically read it for the other (if you've read it you know the one I mean) relationship. Love this fic a lot (as well as the series that it folds into).

We Who Are Forever by WerewolvesAreReal

There is an elf who has lived in Aglarond for nigh on five hundred years before Grilka's birth. He stays always near the inner caverns and the halls of dead dwarf-lords, and the younger dwarrows know him for his songs and sad stories, his queer habit of walking the caverns in twilit sleep and speaking to the ferns that grow by the inner ponds.

Grilka likes talking to the elf, despite his grief. Somehow it feels like talking to an old friend.

Notes: This one is similar to the first one, but I like how the ending feels different and unique. These sorts of fics always leave me in so much pain, but only the good kind of course.

The Pirates of Erebor by mckittericks

The pirates of Erebor have long troubled the isle of Greenwood, but when they kidnap an elven lady for ransom, they don't get exactly what, or rather who, they bargained for.

Notes: I'm an intense sucker for a good pirate fic. While the style of this fic means that I'm not constantly rereading it, it's lovely to pick up again and relearn about this different world and its twists and turns.

A Nest for Birds to Sit and Sing by plinys

My god it's been a while, several months in fact. (Also.. there are a lot more of you than there were before... wow).

This is based on an ask (@bacchaotic). They asked for baby Frodo and/or Fili and Kili bagginsheild fics, there weren't many other parameters than that, but I tried my best... even though I strayed a little from the prompt.

I think we may need to put in some tall hedges as a wind-break.” He turns to the gate that he and Thorin entered through. “Boys, come tell me what you think of this bed as a nursery for your future siblings.”

Kíli has no mark, either, until they come to Mirkwood, and things get needlessly complicated. Because of course elves do things yet another way, as though Bilbo didn't have enough of a headache already.

Of course, there's also the ultimate question: how to tell about your pregnancy to a partner who is not only gold-mad, but also doesn't believe in the existence of illegitimate children?

For a fic to qualify for this list they have to take place entirely out of the canon Tolkien universe, meaning no fix it fics or change in canon fics. Tbh, most of these are modern aus… now, on with the fics.

Idk, I just want more in this universe. Ghost!Thorin au. Definitely didn't cry at the ending...

Bard learnt quite a lot about the mysterious Thranduil Oropherion from the gossiping mothers with children at the school.

And the most interesting thing he learnt was that no one actually knew much of anything about him.

Thranduil, a legendary dancer, had opened up the Greenwood Academy of Dance, and people had flocked to it. He used to hold lessons personally, running master classes and beginners classes alike. But five years ago there had been a fire at the academy – a bad one, Bard remembered hearing about it. By some miracle there had been no fatalities and the school had been quickly rebuilt.

But no one had seen so much as a glimpse of Thranduil since.

Notes: This fic hurts so good. Like Sigrid and Legolas, just ugh, it's so good. I don't have a whole lot more to say, just go fucking read it and love it. Barduil. Modern au!

But they'll get through it, eventually. Though how many tears and broken hearts and arguments there'll in the meantime, Mahal only knows.

And maybe, just maybe, they'll be closer at the end of it.

Notes: This fic is a classic. If you've been reading thilbo for a while I'd be surprised if you haven't already read this one, but in case you haven't you should be aware that this is probably my favorite modern au. It features Sam/Frodo and is just perfect in all the ways. I adore it so much and think it's more deserving of love and adoration then I am. Just read it.

Still, this fic manages to blow me away every time I read it. This is a barduil fic and you may not be into that right now but I still recommend giving it a shot. Especially if you’re into thilbo, gigolas, and the like. It’s truly one of my favorites.

Notes: I just can’t with this fic, it hits you right in the feels and never stops. It’s so fluffy but like also angsty (like any good fic), and the endingggg. And Filiiiiii. I feel like a lot of authors struggle with writing dwarves, Fili and Kili specifically, because they’re not sure how far to take their childishness. For this environment I think Fili was done particularly well, even if it’s not how I would view him in other situations. Btw gigolas.
