Remember when Izzy handed a hand-carved shark to Lucius and said, “Not moving on is worse,” when what he really meant is, “when you all made something for me, showed me how much you care, it saved my life. Here. I made something for you.”

Those who watch this show at a surface level come away from this scene thinking that the message is, “bury your trauma.”

I don’t think the show actually has a message about how to heal from trauma. It knows that it’s a 30 minute comedy. But I do think it suggests we should all at least try to be open to accepting love and help from our community. It’s at least a starting point.

We often think about Stede's beautiful conversation with Mary as the moment when Stede realises he loves Ed.

But I think there's more going on here. This is the moment that Stede realises that he and Ed love each other.

Mary's speech is not just about how she knows she loves Doug. It would have been easy to have Mary list off a bunch of reasons for why she loves Doug. But that is not what she does. Instead, she focuses on how she knows that Doug loves her, and how she knows that their love is shared.

Mary begins by saying that being in love is easy - it's like breathing.

But then she says 'he understands my idiosyncrasies - finds them charming, even'.

'We expose each other to new things, new ideas.'

'We laugh a lot'

'We just pass the time so well'

This speech doesn't just help Stede realise that he loves Ed. It helps him realise that Ed loves him. They they are in love with each other.

And this understanding is carried through S2. Stede often doubts himself, but after that conversation with Mary, there is never any doubt in Stede's mind that Ed loves him

we as a society do not talk enough about how ed canonically plays the piano!! in my head he's one of those ppl who's really good at playing by ear, he listens to a song once and can play it. he's probably good at other instruments too, he can sit down with a mandolin and have it figured out after a few hours of tinkering. a harp? basically just a sideways piano. woodwinds are a little bit of a different beast but once he works out the mouth stuff it's fine (and you know he's good at mouth stuff). music's the same shit once you figure out the mechanics of different instruments. ed "I can do anything" teach is a musical genius
