HEATED RIVALRY SEASON ONE + hall of fame text posts
I get my media recommendations the old fashioned way: by watching someone I follow on here go on an unhinged reblog spree of media related content until I eventually decide to go "alright, what's all this then"
in 2026, remember how GOOD writing feels. remember how satsfying it is to get your characters to the point you have been dying to get to, where they will experience the love, fear, relief or whatever the feeling you want to bring to life may be. let this year be the year of writing, prgress and of satisfactory endings.
i actually cannot stop thinking about that finale itās insane
ākill the little girl inside of you to become a womanā is exactly the kind of idiotic bullshit take that a team of middle aged men would come up with for one of their lead female characters
cut your hair, change your clothes, give up your dreams because theyāre silly, forget your hopes because theyāre unrealistic, and shut yourself out from love because it will only slow you down
so the message at the end of the show really is āthe real world sucks; deal with it like the rest of us.ā
I refuse to believe the Stranger Things writers actually believe they gave Steve and Nancy a good ending
Okay, letās start with Steve.
From the beginning of the show Steve is the kinda guy who gets what he wants. He gets the girl, gets the popularity, gets the crown. He doesnāt really deserve all this, though. Not until later seasons.
It makes him selfish, uncaring. But he learns. Nancy Wheeler gives him the biggest thump of his life and he changes for the better.
He knows humility. Knows the pain of rejection. He fills in as a father figure to all the kids, showing that his goals have changed and evolved.
Then we are given s3. Steveās crown has tipped. Heās a loser now, the show says as much. The characters want you to believe Steve peaked in highschool, but the narrative says otherwise. This isnāt like Steve, right?
Heās still caring, funny. Heās still the character we know and love.
Then we have s4. And Steve is lonely. So lonely. He talks to Robin about how he wants to find connection, the type of love he had with Nancy Wheeler. So he dates. And he dates. He has meaningless sex, meaningless conversations. He doesnāt want any of this. He says it himself.
And then a light shines at the end of the dark, dark tunnel. Nancy Wheeler, the girl heās been pining for since season fucking 2. The girl he has a connection with that he doesnāt share with any one else. And she feels the same.
We see it through her body language. Through her lingering looks. Through the way she also gets flustered around him. Through the way she defends him to her boyfriend after no prompting.
Finally, Steve is getting what he has proved to deserve: Love. And no, Nancy isnāt his āprize.ā But does someone who has changed their ways, learned from their mistakes, became a better person not deserve love because of their past actions?
Then we get to season 5. Season 4 set up a reunion that could be so perfect, so beautiful. They built Steveās entire character up to this moment, this wonderful epilogue where he finally gets what heās been longing for for years.
But, oh, wait no.
Thereās no closure.
Thereās no conversation.
Steve is rejected. Again. (Through Nancyās ex boyfriend, mind you.)
Heās just a desperate loser who was searching for love anywhere he can find it, and his victim in s4 was Nancy.
She never loved him. How could a badass woman like her ever be brought down to Steve Harringtons level? A boring one-time jock with a cushy job saving for a house in a cul-de-sac.
So, Steve has given up on the girl heās loved since he was 16. He knows love is not in the cards for him. After all, heās just a glorified babysitter whoās perfectly content dealing with snot nosed, sticky fingered kids for the rest of his life.
Despite longing for it over the length of the entire show, he doesnāt find that connection with anyone else.
When I first heard him say āI donāt know, I think Kristenās the one.ā The Stancy side of me booed, but the Steve side of me cheered.
Finally, something Steve has been craving, after all the humility, after all the rejection is given to him.
But, no. Kristenās just his third girlfriend of the year. Heās throwing himself into meaningless relationships and meaningless sex, hoping one sticks. The thing he was doing in the beginning of season 4.
Steve Harrington, the character who deserves the most, is given the least. Heās given regression and rejection. He truly is just a new Ted Wheeler, with his beige suit that doesnāt fit and his hair that looks like a lego piece.
What a great ending for good olā Steve Harrington.
And then we have Nancy Wheeler.
From the very beginning of Stranger Things, Nancy Wheeler is a beautifully written female protagonist with complex emotions and aspirations. She is curious when others dismiss danger, driven when others hesitate, and ambitious in a town that quietly expects her to shrink herself.
Nancy grows from a rule-following suburban teenager into a fearless investigator with academic and professional aspirations beyond Hawkins. But sheās not just a cold writer just trying to chase a story.
Itās proven with Mrs. Driscoll. She develops a sort of bond with the woman, wanting to help her, to prove that sheās not crazy. Then we see it again with Mr. Munson. Nancy isnāt only hungry for a what a hit piece a pile of broken bones and stolen eyes is. She cares deeply, wanting to help Mr. Munson prove to the world Eddie isnāt some crazed psychopath.
We Stancies have said time and time again, Nancy isnāt just some gun slinging, leather jacket wearing hard ass. Sheās empathetic, emotional, feminine.
And Steve sees that. He sees her empathy, how she digs deeper when no one else would. Sheās not miserable like the rest of Hawkins, because she actually cares. He sees it and Jonathan doesnāt. Itās said to us multiple times in season 4. Thrown in our faces.
Season 4 sets up the idea that Nancy has strong career ambitions. She wants to go to college, become a big time writer. But sheās still craves connection and love. She wants Jonathan to come with her, to support her on her journey.
But he doesnāt.
The narrative has set up Steve being this support system and connection she craves. He would follow her to the ends of the earth, heās proven as much in earlier seasons.
Season 4 tells us that Nancy can go to college, she can have a career, while also having love. Having connection with a partner.
But season 5 flushes that all down the toilet.
She canāt have love, canāt have connection. Sheās Nancy Walk Emā Down Wheeler, not an icky feminine woman who just like every other human wants love.
I mean seriously, strong women canāt have love. Youāre stupid for thinking otherwise.
Oh, also, Nancy has given up. Shes dropped out of her dream college with barely any explanation whatsoever. Sheās lost, floating and wandering through life hoping sheāll find what sheās been searching for.
You cannot convince me that Steve or Nancy are happy.
You cannot convince me Nancy is seriously ONLY just a strong badass who shoots at things.
You cannot convince me Steve Harrington WANTS to stay in Hawkins. That he doesnāt want to follow his best friend Robin in her travels. That he wants to stay in the town that tormented him for years.
The Duffers have ruined two of their best characters, regressed them into a ball of mush and for what?
So they can say theyāre feminists and women donāt need men?
violet: heās probably thinking about other girls
xaden: I need to figure out a way to attach the tiny dragon to the big dragon
Reposting these two for the gifs bc Ilya is adorable in these
idk Nancy I'll believe you when you say that as soon as you stop sharing a brain with Steve.
Also, with they way Nancy can instantly translate Steve speak - she would understand that he wasn't talking about literally getting her flowers for the hospital. She would know that he was just spitballing ideas because he wanted to be there for her.
I love how petty Xaden is. He has multiple staring contests with people in the new bonus chapter, and literally just spends most of the briefing glaring at Dain across the table.
Itās the āI winā when Dain looks away for me, tbh.
Not to mention sitting in between Violet and Liam because, and I quote, āhe can back the fuck up when Iām aroundā. Xaden, Liam has given you absolutely no reason to think heās even interested in Violet, you can CHILL.
One of the core parts of Ilyaās identity is that he knows heās hot, he knows heās sexually desirable and heās incredibly sexually literate.
What holds him back is he doesnāt believe heās desirable romantically. He especially doesnāt believe that he deserves Shane. That insecurity and that low self worth given to him by his family, the one group of people who are supposed to love him unconditionally, is what drives their miscommunication.
Heās staring himself down in the mirror, disgusted with himself for needing Shane so much. Of course Shane doesnāt want him outside of sex. Thatās all heās good for. Of course Shane found a nice, sensible, beautiful woman.
Shane is a āgood boyā. Heās going to settle down and get married and do all the things a professional hockey player should be doing.
Ilya is so deeply hurt and embarrassed that he thought for even a second he could be something more for Shane. Embarrassed that he wanted that.
He opened himself up for the first time in his adult life and got a knife through the heart- because of course he did. Thatās what always happened when he was a kid. When he played a game and expected his father to be proud of him, only to be dismissed and belittled at every turn.
His brother calling him a āwhiny faggotā for expressing even the most surface level emotions.
Iām sick about this sad bisexual Russian man.
Couldnāt leave this in the tags.
Early in the book, Ilya describes all the things he hates about Shane, except we know that what heās actually describing is what he loves and respects about Shane. One of them, obviously, is him being boring. So this is soooo correct.
Spoilers for the HR epilogue:
Thereās a moment where Shane and Ilya have Hayden and Jackie over for dinner, and Ilya spills something on his shirt and Shane wordlessly hands him a towel without thinking, and itās such a tender moment for Ilya. Itās a tiny detail, but he views it with so much domesticity and love. Also the fact that they cook together
I love my boys so much

I'm legitimately curious what Tumblr Staff would've done had Heated Rivalry come out during the height of the porn ban. That smut was funded by the Canadian taxpayers. You gonna ban the officially funded smut?
