like the episode opens and Elena is overworking herself and Mateo is like *slams hands on the table* she needs rest!! and Elena is eventually like ok fine :( and everyone leaves and she immediately goes back to work. but she finds ash so she goes and gets Mateo and he's working too like bro c'mon you were just yelling at Elena about this, and he doesn't comment on the fact that she must have been working again he's just raring to go right then. it is nighttime. neither of them thinks to get backup. they tell no one they're leaving. like no Gabe, no guards, no nothing. and in fact the topic of backup doesn't come up until they are already at Takaína at which point they send the jaquins, currently the only backup they have, away to get backup. they go in after Ash alone. Mateo gets yeeted through a table, Elena falls down a well. Elena flies back out of the well. their biggest concern about this is that her dress sparkles now. Mateo gets head trauma. but they catch ash right when their backup actually gets there and Gabe is like woah! you got her! and they're like lol yeah but check out Elena she sparkles now!!! they both almost died. multiple times. it is now morning. neither of them has slept. they go back to the palace and Elena creates Life, she can Do That now, and when she brings it to Mateo he is mostly concerned about said Life messing up his bed, which I don't know why he's worried bc we know he wasn't in it at any point last night, but eventually he figures out that oh you have super magical powers now because you fell in the well of super magical power! duh!
like they just have so little perspective. their priorities are all kinds of all over the place, they have no sense of self-preservation, they have both outsourced their self-control to the only other person in their party whose restraint is actually worse. they're each other's best cheerleaders. they're each other's worst enablers. they're college kids that still think they're invincible. they're so fucking funny.
