Re-reading Lucky Day to tide me over until my preorder of @drchucktingle's Fabulous Bodies drops, and also because his work really helps sustain me when my own body is being weird.
I cannot overstate how much I appreciate that Vera is not okay. Her mother was rotten to her and she still felt so much pain at losing her that it broke her, and everything that happened after drove her deeper and deeper into nihilism. She went through horrific trauma and she's actually traumatised. Our hero is a mess, because deep down she's the kind of person who buys cat food for a stray even when she's determined to collapse into nothingness.
Whereas our villain, Agent Layne, is able to be incredibly positive and bright and cheerful and happy, because he doesn't actually give a shit. He killed people in the Low Probability Event and it doesn't bother him. It got him out of his rut. He's pleased he has no oversight because it means he gets to do whatever the hell he wants to get results. Every kindness he shows to Vera is for the purpose of making her a more useful tool. Because that's ALL people are to him.
And damn if I don't just love that. That the nihilist is actually full of compassion and empathy even when she hates it. That the optimist only cares about himself and his own experiences. Because it resonates. I struggle with depression and anxiety and ASD and ADHD and there are times when the blackness would be so easy to slip into. But it's always little acts of kindness that become the rope I drag myself out by.
Love is real. Love is so real.

Important research for a story I'm writing! Not real life, never real life.
You are transported back in time and into the body of a young noblewoman in the 1400s. Your parents have married you off to an awful, abusive, rapist husband whom literally no one else would marry despite him being very high nobility because he's that terrible. You successfully produce a baby boy and then plan to murder this man for the good of everyone and yourself. Here is the question: do you think you could murder him in a way that is undetectable to the historical people around you? Note: they aren't stupid, you are the prime suspect as the battered wife AND you can't just say poison. Where are you going to buy poison? Do you know anything about poison actually? NO GOOGLING! You were sent back without a plan!
Do you think you could murder someone in the 1400s and get away with it with your modern know-how?

Edit: to clarify about the poison, you can use poison if you actually know how to identify it, I'm saying you can't just go "Poison!" with no knowledge about poison. Buying it probably means they know that poison and you're caught. Your personal knowledge when you read this post is all you have.
Another point of clarity: You went through all that trouble to have a baby without modern medicine so you could get the sweet house after your husband died. That's why you can't be caught. No disappearing.
More information: this is a fan fiction based on a Chinese novel/drama called The Sword and the Brocade/The Concubine-born Daughter's Stratagies, and concerns a minor character, the female lead's older sister. After marrying the awful husband, she has a bad time for about half a year, miscarries because of him and then he's murdered.
The fic is about someone coming in from the future knowing the story and trying to successfully have a baby in order to stay in control of the household as the wife raising the heir. Very unfortunately, she changes enough that he doesn't end up getting murdered and then she has to try to off him herself. She wants to keep her position and not get caught.
I don't know if I'll post this story, it's very dark. It would require so many warning tags. I just got to the murder part and realized that I, a modern person, had no idea how to knock this guy off without getting caught, even with all my future knowledge! The main character is an actor/dancer, so she's not up on poison unless it's a hobby of hers (I cannot personally identify hemlock or foxglove). I didn't specify a country, just a year, because I was having trouble coming up with anything at all, much less something area specific.
Anyway, this has confirmed my two ideas, which were cause an alcohol-related accident or cause sepsis by infecting a wound. But I'm enjoying reading all the ideas.
