I want to believe people can change and grow from doing horrendously bad things. I don't want everyone to be stuck in their 14 year old 4chan nazi phase if they truly want to do better, if they're truly trying to do better.

But also I don't want a "past" neonazi to be elected into the senate. And that shouldn't be a difficult difference to make.

There is a difference between a hypothetical alternate universe Graham Platner who publicly apologizes and doesn't make excuses and just does his thing farming oysters and the real life Graham Platner who covers it up, makes excuses when that doesn't work, and lies about those excuses to pretend to be a changed man to run for the United States Senate.

I want Graham Platner to change. I don't think he currently has, but that's a different topic. But even if he has or will change, I don't want him in the Senate. If the US government has decided that simply being born outside of the US is enough to disqualify someone from running for Presidency, then getting hate symbols tattooed on your body should be enough to disqualify someone from winning a Senate seat.
