his name is stephen mader and not only did he refuse to shoot, he actively wanted to help the man (ronald ‘rj’ williams) because he could tell that he was only acting out because of mental illness. rj williams was suicidal and holding an unloaded gun and, while mader didn’t shoot him, a fellow officer (ryan kuzma) did and murdered him on the spot. here is the source and here’s to hoping rj williams gets justice

Can neurotypicals let neurodivergent people have our own dang words and language? Like seriously I'm tired of seeing NTs use language originally meant specifically to describe aspects mental illness and other forms of neurodivergence in ways that they weren't intended for and don't mean.

I'm not even talking about crud like "Make sure to wipe your shoes before you come in cuz I'm like so OCD!! Lol!!"

because that's another discussion altogether.

I'm talking about "triggered" becoming a meme and meaning "angry over something" and becoming derisive. When it originally meant "I'm having flashbacks(emotional or sensory) to trauma."

"Intrusive thoughts" is used to refer to any wacky, impulsive thoughts one may have. When it was originally intended to refer to "disturbing thoughts that one cannot control" that are a symptom/result of some form of mental illness.

"Hyperfixation" is used to mean any kind of intense interest or passion. In reality hyperfixations can lead to such intense focus that people forget to eat, use the bathroom, sleep, etc.

This misusage of language is not harmless! It makes it more difficult for NDs to talk about our experiences. Before we might have had to define these terms but now we have to actively fight against these wrongful connotations before we can start a conversation.

Furthermore, it can be even more othering than not having the language at all. Seeing that other people's """intrusive thoughts""" are "pet the polar bear" can make those who actually do have intrusive thoughts and are just starting to educate themselves feel worse. Because not only do they have horrible thoughts, apparently the other people who have the "same problem" aren't even like them.

And honestly this problem isn't just with neurotypical folks. Neurodivergent people also misuse language that was intended to describe the experiences of other forms of neurodivergence.

So yeah, stop using neurodivergence language incorrectly challenge 2019.

If someone says something to you about it- even if they aren't "polite" or ""an ass"- listen to them.

Here's a little update on things going on in my life.

I'm still in grad school and working full time providing services for pre-k to 1st grad students in my district.

My grandfather just passed away last week, which has been hard to process being so busy.

I didn't mean for my hiatus to become as long as it has but know I miss you guys and I miss Crona a lot.
