Behold - the lyrics from Destiny Child’s song “Cater 2 U”. Bey & Kelly & Michelle are super sexy in this music video, while they sing about taking their care of their men in a rather domestic way. When I heard this song, the lyric “Let me run your bathwater” jumped out me, because it’s one of the harchakot* mentioned in the Talmud. I was like, “Ding ding ding! They’re implying that running a bath for your honey now is a prelude to sexytimes later!” And you know what? This whole juxtapision of sexy song + offering to perform domestic duties is really interesting, and demonstrated to me how some of these caretaking actions can be used as come-ons, in a certain context, which is something I never really thought about before.
*harchakot = distancing practices, i.e. laws found in the Talmud and later halachic works that prohibit certain ‘close’ behaviors between a couple during niddah separation e.g. sharing a bed or drawing a bath
