Staring down at the little device in front of her, Emma felt a rush of cold heat sweep through her body, filled with a deep set panic taking up residence in her chest.Â
Eyes prickling with tears, and quickly wiped them away and let out a quiet,Â
âOkayâŠokayâŠthis isâŠoh shitâ.
A loud knock on the door of the PTMC bathroom jarred her out of her thoughts.Â
âYou doinâ alright in there kid?âÂ
Emma had been feeling light headed the last few shifts, and the smell of Danaâs morning coffee, which Emma normally loved, made her vomit into the trash just outside the nurses station.Â
Placing a hand on her tummy she called back,Â
There was a long pause before Dana said in a lower and very maternal tone,Â
âI'll check back in a few. âÂ
That's when the tears fell. She had one hour left in her shift. She would get through it, and then figure out what she was going to do, how she was going to tell him.Â
She and the infamous Park the Shark had become entangled in some kind of situationship over the course of the past year.Â
It started with a power outage and one orthopedic surgeon and one nurse stuck in an elevator for 3 hours.Â
Emma had been transporting the last of the paper patient files after the cyber attack, and Park had just been trying to go home, when the elevator went dark and the ground lurched suddenly. Emma lost her balance, falling into Park, strong arms steading her as the patient files slipped from her arms, scattering on the floor as her cheek collided with a deliciously strong pectoral muscle.Â
The red emergency light clicked on, luckily hiding the flush Emma assumed was blooming across her cheeks.
âI-Iâm so sorry Dr. ParkâŠâ
He just let out a deep sound from his chest and replied,
âItâs fine Nurse Nolan.âÂ
It was then she realized their proximity, looking up into his eyes, his warm hand steading her waist, the other wrapped gently around her upper arm.Â
Carefully she stepped back, and with an embarrassed sigh, knelt down.Â
It was Brendon's turn to flush, he slowly dragged a hand down his face and sighed.Â
He felt like a dirty old man as Emma began to carefully sort through the scattered files.Â
There was no denying her beauty, but her kindness was something that drew his interest, even though she deserved far better than a middle aged orthopedic surgeon with the reputation of being as cold and calculating as a shark. Looking for prey.Â
Emma deserved better than that.Â
He knelt down as well, drawing Emma's curious gaze, as he too began to help her sort through the patient records.Â
She smiled gently at him, fingers brushing as they got everything sorted within minutes.Â
Just as they were finishing up a voice came over the emergency speaker.Â
Help was on the way, but a power generator had been taken out in the area and previous water damage had impacted their emergency supply.Â
They were stuck, at least for the next little while.Â
It was during this time that an easy banter began between them, they talked about why they got into medicine, childhood pets and it was the first time in a long while that Brendon felt truly seen by another person.
After the elevator they seemed drawn to each other, their meetings at work didn't increase in frequency, but intensity.Â
The tension built over a few months, before Emma took the leap and pressed a kiss to his lips after he drove her home one day.Â
She thought the Shark moniker he earned at work was fitting in a way she would never tell him.Â
Not for his cold precision and intuition that saved countless lives in the ER.Â
But in the way his body seemed to know her body, as a shark does the ocean.Â
Encompassing in all things that she had never known she needed from a lover.Â
She had moved into his place about 3 weeks ago. Her little apartment building had been condemned after the discovery of a mold colony living in its walls and ceilings.Â
Emma was venting to Park one night and he just casually suggested she stay with him, while she figured it all out.Â
When she left the hospital tonight, she would be going home to him, the man she was admittedly in love with, and whose DNA lived inside the small bundle of cells growing in her body.Â
The reality of her pregnancy was a shock to her system, but not completely unlikely with howâŠpassionate and attentive her lover was.Â
They took precautions, but sometimes biology finds a way.Â
Splashing some cold water on her face Emma slips the pregnancy test into her scrub pocket, and exits the bathroom.
If Dana is a little more attentive and gentle with her the rest of the shift, she doesn't complain. Her reassuring presence and support has always given Emma strength in tough moments. She would be okay.Â
An hour and a half later Emma makes her way into a dark condo.
Brendon's surgery must have run later, which wasn't unusual. So she settled into her regular routine, aside from the pregnancy test burning a hole in her work bag.Â
Slipping on some pajama bottoms and one of Brendon's shirts after her shower, she then turns her gaze to her work bag.Â
Deciding the test should instead burn a hole in her pyjama pocket while she waited for Brendon to get home.Â
Emma begins the task of trying to figure out dinner when she hears the front door open.Â
Pausing for a moment before looking behind her, she can't help but appreciate the handsome, albeit exhausted looking form of her lover.Â
He shot her a look before a gentle smile worked its way onto his handsome face.Â
He held up a plastic bag of takeout containers, shouldering his work bag.
âFigured we both had long days, you okay with Thai?âÂ
Smiling she nodded, Thai actually sounded fucking perfect to Emma right now.
Brendon approached her with unhurried but deliberate steps, placing the food on the counter before wrapping his strong arms around her, she accepted the embrace, burying her face into his chest.
She felt warm lips pepper kisses along her forehead before turning her lips up to meet his.Â
He pulled away reluctantly, insisting he shower before joining her for the evening.Â
She dishes up the food and in about 20 minutes he joins her as they settle down on the couch for the evening.Â
Park clocked early into the evening that Emma, while not being completely distant tonight, seemed quieter than normal. He could tell she had something on her mind, but had long learned not to pry.Â
She always came to him when she was ready, and he learned she just needed him to be a safe space for her, which he could do.
Park loved her in a way that shook the foundations of his world, but he tempered it to not overwhelm her with his dedication.Â
He knew that he wanted to marry her one day, see her round with his children, should she want that, he could be happy with just the two of them forever if that's what would make her happy.Â
The credits of the show came to an end and Emma tentatively reached for the remote, turning it off without a word.
Brendon raised an inquisitive eyebrow at her, and ran a comforting hand down the length of her side as she snuggled into him.
She asks in a quiet but inquisitive tone.Â
His response comes with a small smile that she meets with a nervous one of her own.
âUmâŠhow would you feel, if I were to tell you I was pregnant?â,
Her eyes flickering between his and the seam on the neckline of his shirt.Â
Brendon leans towards her, gently encompassing her cheek with his paw of a hand, guiding her gaze to his own.Â
Emma's eyes are watery, and the tip of her nose begins to redden, as it does when she becomes upset.Â
He kissed the tip of it before responding.Â
âWell, I would start by asking what you would like to do? It's not my body, but it's my responsibility to be there for you. I love you Em, and any child you chose to give me will be cherished and loved"Â
For the second time that day tears make their way down Emma's face, quiet sobs beginning to make her slight form shake, he wraps her in a hug before asking her,
âAre you telling me you're pregnant Em?âÂ
She nodded against his chest, finally pulling the test from her pocket, and handing it to him.
âWe are having a baby Brenâ,
She confirms as he smiles, his dimples showing as he pulls her against his chest. Pressing kisses to her lips and any available skin as he whispers words of reverence and promises against her skin.
She secretly hopes their baby gets his dimples.Â
Halfway into the new year, they welcome a little girl, who has her mother's eyes and her father's dimples.Â
