Growing Up In Two Worlds
As the title may seems a little confusing to some of you due to the ‘Two Worlds’ what I mean by that is the good big ‘hearing world’ and a good big world of silence the ‘deaf world’
Of course I am born deaf even though I am mostly part of the ‘hearing world’ where I can speak instead of sign language and be any like person that is around. But there are a few times that I would be in the deaf world where I just use the sign language.
I was born the fifth child from my family with parents who were married for many years. As the first four children in the family had no problem with their hearing until I came along. My mother and father didn’t recognize my deafness until I was a couple of weeks old as they knew I was not reacting to the sounds as was asleep so that is where my parents knew discovered I was deaf so they tried those hearing aids (which you may see elderly people wearing). Sadly those hearing aids were not making a massive difference with my hearing as there are things I still can’t hear, while I grew a bit I still couldn’t be able to speak.
As this made my parents completely worried and they decided to hand me to the doctors to an cochlear implant operation which is another hearing device which gives really advanced hearing. That operation took place around December 1999. Then it took me a month to recover and finally ‘switch on’ the cochlear implant. Well my reaction wasn’t great as you would expect it to be from the videos you may see where babies hear for the first time. I cried as I was scared of the sounds which I never heard before such as the computer fan noise.
I am glad that my parent decided to give me an cochlear implant as I have no idea how life would be like without one as I was be able to attend to a mainstream school, gain qualifications from my GCSEs and A-Levels also of course I am currently attending to my first year of University.
You may ask how was I involved in the deaf world, I got involved in the deaf world by attending to a boarding school just for 2 years which deaf children have attended. It was a great experience to meet other deaf people as it would make me feel less isolated and this is where I picked up the sign language. In my personal opinion I find deaf people more accepting than hearing people as there was less bullying occurring in the deaf school as the mainstream school.
Also keep in mind, cochlear implants are not for every deaf people, not every deaf person HAS to have one. I see a whole lot of deaf people who have their own careers and live their own life like anyone else, it is amazing how they can manage being in a world with a lot of people who have no understanding on deafness.
Just thought it would be interesting to share my personal experience of being deaf and may possibly add more information such as university life and how I manage that.
Literally, I thought that was one of Western dessert.
