My favourite incident like this was the Skylab 4 mission, where the crew arrived at the empty station, only to find several people already inside, to their great alarm. Upon investigating, they realized the intruders were wearing the Skylab 3 mission patches⊠and were also just dummies the Skylab 3 crew had made and left there without telling anyone, specifically to fuck with the next team.
Can you imagine entering a supposedly empty space station and seeing this? Fucking terrifying. I love it.
Iâm just impressed that, in an environment where weight and available resources are so carefully accounted for, people still find windows to pull bullshit like this.

Iâm watching that documentary âBefore Stonewallâ about gay history pre-1969, and uncovered something which I think is interesting.
The documentary includes a brief clip of a 1954 televised newscast about the rise of homosexuality. The host of the program interviewed psychologists, a police officer, and one âknown homosexualâ. The âknown homosexualâ is 22 years old. He identifies himself as Curtis White, which is a pseudonym; his name is actually Dale Olson.
So I tracked down the newscast. According to what I can find, Dale Olson may have been the first gay man to appear openly on television and defend his sexual orientation. He explains that thereâs nothing wrong with him mentally and heâs never been arrested. When asked whether heâd take a cure if it existed, he says no. When asked whether his family knows heâs gay, he says that they didnât up until tonight, but he guesses theyâre going to find out, and heâll probably be fired from his job as well. So of course the host is like âŠwhy are you doing this interview then? and Dale Olson, cool as cucumber pie, says âI think that this way I can be a little useful to someone besides myself.â
1954. 22 years old. Balls of pure titanium.
Despite the pseudonym, Daleâs boss did indeed recognize him from the TV program, and he was promptly fired the next day. He wrote into ONE magazine six months later to reassure readers that he had gotten a new job at a higher salary.
Curious about what became of him, I looked into his life a little further. It turns out that he ultimately became a very successful publicity agent. He promoted the Rocky movies and Superman. Not only that, but get this: Dale represented Rock Hudson, and he was the person who convinced him to disclose that he had AIDS! He wrote the statement Rock read. And as we know, Rock Hudsonâs disclosure had a very significant effect on the national conversation about AIDS in the U.S.
It appears that no one has made the connection between Dale Olson the publicity agent instrumental in the AIDS debate and Dale Olson the 22-year-old first openly gay man on TV. So I thought Iâd make it. For Pride month, an unsung gay hero.

the thing about capitalism is that at a certain point a product reaches its maximum audience and cant really be improved (at least not while remaining profitable), but capitalism requires a product provide infinite growth, and at that point the only way to increase profits is to raise prices, cut corners, and in the case of services start adding advertisements. this is just how the system works.

The actual economic term for this parasitic behavior is "Rent Seeking", as in "charging you rent for things that didn't used to cost money just because we can."

TIL that Billy Crystalâs character, Miracle Max, in the Princess Bride was so funny that it nearly stopped the production of the movie. One actor bruised a rib from clenching to try not to laugh.

Fun fact in addition: Cary Elwes wasnât allowed to be part of that scene because he kept laughing. The Westley on the table was dummy.
This is AFTER he broke a toe riding Andre the Giantâs ATV, and got concussed when he and Christopher Guest tried to make the scene where Count Rugen knocks Wesley out more convincing. Mandy Patinkin busted the rib trying not to laugh, and also accidentally stabbed Guest during their fight scene. About the only person who didnât get some form of overenthusiasm-induced injury or illness during filming was Robin Wright, who had to repeatedly get her dress burnt up in the fire swamp scene because Goldman ruined one of the takes by screaming âOh my god, sheâs on fire!â
