What's the first thing you would go do if you got turned into a theriform of your species right now, where you currently are? What's stopping you from doing it? Make time and effort to indulge in the animal activities you desire, even if your body isn't quite right. If it's something you physically can't do, what is the closest thing to it that you can do? Often we have pretty humble and feasible initial desires.

This is an easy first step in actually doing things to experience your nonhumanity instead of just being a consumer and posting online.

And don't get all defeatist on me about it until you've tried it. I know it likely won't be perfect, be it on account of your body, your environment, or any other factors, but you can still make changes for the better in your life without them being perfect. Doing it part way is better than not doing it at all.

Let the beast stretch its limbs. I believe in you. You are stronger than you know.

Only you can know who and what you are. No one else can tell you. Your process of self discovery is your own and others can't do it for you. It can be hard work. Reminder for nonhumans: quadrobics is not an easy or common thing to do & you do not need to feel bad about not being able to do it.

If you wanna do it- GREAT!! I believe in you, but please don’t beat yourself up for not being able to do it immediately; you really need to build strength and muscle up first

Quadrobics is an extremely difficult workout that combines calisthenics & aerobics- most folk I see doing this with “ease” are very slim & don’t carry much weight on their bones. This makes quadrobics much easier to work towards and perfect as they dont have to lift as much weight

And I need more of my older & heavier weight nonhuman peers to comprehend that.

I need more of us to comprehend & internalize that quadrobics is a complex exercise that requires a lot of physical strength; one that most bodies have to take time to build up to.

If you’re not gonna beat yourself up for not being able to easily lift 150 lbs first try- don’t beat yourself up for quadrobics taking time. And additionally- be nice to your body for its reasonable limits! Not being able to walk on all 4’s doesn’t mean your body is bad; it just means it’s different

Wolf Therians or Werewolf Otherkin?

So, I’ve noticed that a bunch of therian wolves would seemingly be better describe as werewolf otherkin. What do I mean by that? I mean that they identify more with the cultural/psychological figure of the werewolf, rather than an actual wolves. A great example of this is the descriptions of rage. It’s a relatively human emotion. Granted, animals probably do feel rage too, but I’d doubt that it’s as characteristic of them as it is of humans.

However, rage is a very negative emotion, and as usual with negative emotions, we can’t quite accept them as part of ourselves. It plays into the concept of the Jungian shadow; our “negative” side becomes something other than ourselves and risks wresting control of ourselves if not dealt with properly. Thus, the werewolf: a creature that has nothing in common with a real wolf except superficial appearance, and instead has everything in common with our own dark side: bloodthirsty, hateful, enraged, and infectious. 

Especially teenagers might find themselves fascinated by the kind of emotions that the werewolf exemplifies. Didn’t we all have those days (or years) of hating absolutely everyone, when we were at our worst? Wolves, meanwhile, are a relatively calm animal. They rarely attack any humans, and if they do, it’s hardly out of malice. As I said, wolves have little in common with werewolves.

Which brings me to my point: those who describe their therianthropic experiences as more of the former would probably be best described as werewolf otherkin! Certainly, the creature they identify with is not encountered in nature.

…right? Remember to voice your potential disagreements (or agreements), I want to hear them.

Yeah, I guess if you’re thinking of the Hollywood perversion of the Werewolf. There are many Werewolf myths in which the Werewolf is kind and helpful to humans. There are also a few Werewolf myths in which the Werewolf is a human that has been transformed into a normal looking four-legged wolf. The story of “William and the Werewolf” also known as “The Romance of William Palerne” written c. 1200 is a good example of both. A Werewolf isn’t always an angry anthropomorphized creature that’s out of control.

I would also like to briefly mention the online history of the Therianthropy community. It all started in 1993 on a group chat called Alt.Horror.Werewolves which was a werewolf fandom basically. People began to talk about having a more personal and inner connection to werewolves and having the spirits of animals rather than just liking the myths, newer fiction, and movies, etc. The first Therianthropes called themselves Weres and transitioned to calling themselves Therians in the early 2000′s to get away from the vision of the Hollywood monster that came to people’s minds. When people hear or see the word “Therianthrope” or “Therian” most don’t have a preconceived and negative idea. A few older members of the community might still prefer the term Were, but everyone I’ve spoken to agrees that Were and Therian means the same thing.

Whether a person wants to call themselves a Werewolf Otherkin or Wolf Therian or Werewolf Therian or Wolfkin is really up to them. To me, all of those mean a wolf-person, some combination of wolf and human. To me, any were-animal is just some combination of human and animal. We know that magic isn’t needed to be this. I personally use Wolf Therianthrope because therianthrope means “animal-person” or “human-beast”. It personally makes sense to me and feels right.

Other people might think of were-animals differently. It could depend on how well a person knows their inner animal self and how much soul-searching or introspection one has done. Which term a person uses could depend how the animal aspects and human aspects of the self are integrated and work together. That could be how those parts of the self work together mentally, emotionally, and behaviorally. Yeah, it really depends on how deeply one wants to delve into examining it and questioning it to decide which term is best. People can get very specific about why one term is a better fit than the other if they wanted to. A person might choose Werewolf Otherkin because they are specifically a type of werewolf from newer fiction or some Hollywood movie. In that case, Otherkin is the more correct term to use.
