HAPPY HANUKKAH! 🕎
when sexism is used against one woman, it is used against all women. the argument that “some women deserve it” really means “men in power should get to decide which women are well behaved enough to be considered human”
Today I saw a pic of a baby cowbird next 2 its nest "parent" and it was so much bigger!!!!! Which is the sort of thing that gets normal people upset about the injustice of nest parasitism but makes *me* worry if baby cowbirds get bird dysmorphia
This (from Cornell Labs via Merlin) is the pic I was looking at. It's just a little baby but it's so much bigger than its "parent"!!!! Do baby cowbirds feel isolated? Do they understand they're a different bird, or are they just a really bad sparrow?
hey, good news! ecologists have been studying this very thing! it seems young cowbirds have some kind of innate sense that leads them to sneak out of their foster nest at night to hang out in grasslands where they—more often than not—meet other cowbirds and learn more about what they really are.
Thanks I am going to cry so hard I throw up ;-;
imagine simping for capitalism this badly
A Christmas Carol never even says that Scrooge gives up anything at all, or even somehow stops being super-rich. He just stops being a dick about it and starts using his wealth to help people. Scrooge isn’t even written as an indictment of rich people, since plenty others appear in the story and are presented as perfectly nice people. Scrooge is a miser. He doesn’t even use his money to help himself, which is called out as the reason he dies within the year. Learning to care for himself is just as much part of the Ghosts’ lessons as learning to care for other people.
how dare Charles Dickens, a man once sent to work in a factory at age 12 while his father was in debtors’ prison, inflict such Wokery upon us as “caring about the poor”
best way I have found to comfort people who are endlessly apologetic of things outside their control (often as a result of shitty relationships) is the jokingly hyperbolic accusation of [gasp] "so you're behind it all!"
like someone giving me directions who starts apologizing profusely when I miss a light as if it's their fault--[gasp] "it was you who petitioned city council to build this intersection in 1893!!" because it snaps them out of it and they laugh like. oh yeah. that's a ridiculous thing to blame someone for. I'm not that guy. you're not that guy. it works.
It does work! I like when people do that because not only am I reassured that they're not mad, I get to respond, "Yes! I did it! You have uncovered my sinister centuries-long plan!" etc.
★ countdown to christmas ★ day 24 of 24: it’s a wonderful life (1946)
“strange, isn’t it? each man’s life touches so many other lives. and when he isn’t around he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he?”
Was just thinking about this earlier today…lol 🙃
