After Saya’s mother is sent to an immigration detention center, Saya finds comfort in listening to her mother’s warm greeting on their answering machine. To ease the distance between them while she’s in jail, Mama begins sending Saya bedtime stories inspired by Haitian folklore on cassette tape. Moved by her mother’s tales and her father’s attempts to reunite their family, Saya writes a story of her own—one that just might bring her mother home for good.
With stirring illustrations, this tender tale shows the human side of immigration and imprisonment—and shows how every child has the power to make a difference.

R&B singer Janelle Monáe released a blistering 6 ½-minute protest song on Friday called “Hell You Talmbout.” The song’s premise is simple, and that simplicity is the source of its power. The lyrics are the chanted names of black Americans killed by police and vigilantes, followed by the phrase “say his name” or “say her name.” The chorus is an anthemic, gospel-leaning repetition of the song’s title. Monáe is joined on the track by a drum line and the members of her Wondaland Arts Society collective: Jidenna, Roman GianArthur, Deep Cotton, St. Beauty and George 2.0. All of the vocals are raw, several to the point of breaking. None of the names are sung.

remind your fellow proletarian bikini bottom analyst to refrain from totalizing their knowledge into a bikini bottom centric locus. rock bottom and new kelp city do not have the same sociohistorical dynamics as bikini bottom, so alter your method of viewing identity politics accordingly. you possess far more cultural capital than those who reside in rock bottom, for example, so do not write their narratives for them and resist viewing them through a voyeuristic lens.

Nine-year-old Jamyla Bolden was shot and killed Tuesday night while doing her homework on her bed in Ferguson, Missouri. A Fox News article Thursday claimed that St. Louis-area demonstrators expressed “no outrage” over her murder. The only issue? That’s not true. The conservative media’s favorite black violence trope goes down again.
