we now inch closer to the concept of an unempowered mate getting seriously harmed from this whole thing and while i am a seriously worried individual, i am salivating at the thought of a protective alpha david shaw
am i terrified for the pack and their mates now that they have a vamp target on them again? yeah for sure
but having that same feeling i had back when quinn was still around is SO GOOD. i missed it. it’s been a while since we’ve had some angst from the wolf and vamp boys, im so ready
I need to see protective David NEOW
Angel and David head cannons
- Angel loves referring to all the shifters as “Dawg”. They didn’t have this habit until they joined the pack.
- David loves to bite Angel in the exact same spot every single time. He tries to sprinkle a few more bites in other areas, but if he only gets one, it always goes on the side of their neck.
- Over the years, Angel got increasingly worse about stealing David’s clothes. Their at home lounge wear is usually something of his.
- The shifters love to play fight as a way of training for jobs and blowing off steam. Angel, Babe, and Sweetheart are not allowed to participate because their partners get too anxious about their safety. (Sam gets to participate, which all of them are salty about)
- Angel has curls that only come through when they do a very thorough curl routine. Most of the time their hair is just wavy.
- David loves to just breathe Angel in. Loves to stand behind them and hold them and feel surrounded by their scent.
- When the mating bond snapped into place, Angel was unusually cagey about anyone touching them and only wanted David in their space.
- Similarly, David was unwilling to be apart from Angel for long periods of time. He needed to be around them daily.
- Angel had a terrible sleep schedule before they met David. Now they go to bed by 8:00 or 9:00 on weekdays.
- It eats David alive, the things he said to Angel when he first met them. It sometimes keeps him awake at night, just thinking about how mean he was. His only comfort is feeling them curl closer on his chest while they sleep, reminding him that they forgive him.
- Angel was not in the mood to talk to Lasko during the inversion. They wanted nothing to do with anyone who wasn’t David and until Milo gave them David’s jacket, they were raining hell on anyone who got in their way.
Some beautiful quotes hidden within BA spicy times✨
“Shit, Honey. [laughs] Nothing, it’s just… seeing you look down on me like that, it’s so fucking hot. Well, you always look at me so… deep. It actually used to make me really worried back when we were first just flirting and stuff. Yeah, I was always scared you were mad at me or something. Well now I know it’s just you, you think a lot. A lot more than I do. I know that I fill up the silence a lot, cuz that’s just what I’m used to but, with you, silence doesn’t feel bad. You, looking at me, doesn’t feel scary. It feels really good. Feeling seen by you feels good. I love you so much, honey.” (Guy)
“Touch of your skin. The feeling when I press my lips against you. [kisses] Before I met you, I didn’t really ever think about touch as being super important to me. But it’s something that comes naturally with you. And it’s something that has come to mean a lot. Plus it pairs well with quality time. Quality time with tangential cuddling or hand holding or, you know, little back scratches done in passing. Or quality time where the cuddling itself is the quality time. It just feels good. It feels important and I love when we do it. I love just being with you, in every sense. You make bad days good. And good days great.” (Unnamed)
“No, I’m ok. So much better than ok. I just… I can’t… I can’t believe how lucky I am. I never thought I could have a life like this. I mean, maybe when I was a kid, but since everything started to change, when everything started to get real, when I became Alpha, I… I never thought I could have this. I just figured I would be alone. And then even once we got together, I was such a fucking prick most of the time. And I’d have these moments where even after I said something, I was like, I was screaming at myself in the back of my own head like “why would you say that, why can’t you be better at the shit going on inside your head”. But somehow you stayed. And I got my head out of my own ass. I just… I never thought I could be this happy. I never thought I could have a life that was this beautiful. Even for all the shit in it, it is beautiful, what we share is… and I just… I just can’t believe it sometimes. We’re married now. We’re not just mates, I’m your husband. We’ve gotten rings, we’ve got… we’ve got the rest of our lives ahead of us, together.” (David)
“Thank you, baby. Yeah, thank you for trusting me like you do. That’s what makes it all feel so good, knowing that you trust me like that. With that part of you. That you’re willing to give over control to me like that… I know you’re used to holding onto that so tight in your day to day life. The fact that you’re willing to trust me with your control like this… it means a lot. And all I want to do is prove myself worthy of that trust. I love you. And thank you for believing in me when it came to this job. Having you in my corner when it comes to all this, it really meant more than you could know. I wouldn’t be what I am today without you.” (Aaron)
“Thank you for trusting me with that. I mean, for all of it but, even just trusting me enough to ask. I know it took me a long time to show you more of that side of myself. I love my powers, but, I never wanted that to be all I was. To anyone. Least of all you. Thank you for being someone that I can trust that part of myself with. That I can trust all of myself with. I love you very much, Angel. I’m grateful for you. [kisses] My perfect mate.” (David)
“You’re so good for me, Sweetheart. I’m pretty sure my lips are bruised. [laughs, and kisses] Thank you, Sweetheart, for this. For all of it. That trust that you have in me, it means everything. That’s what makes it all feel so fucking good when we do this shit. That control you hand me is such a gift. I hope you know just how much reverence I hold for that. It’s beautiful. It’s vulnerable. And It’s honest. And it’s so fucking hot, Sweetheart.” (Milo)
“Just be with me in this moment. Breathe with me. You turn my brain into a haze in the best way imaginable. [kisses] You are a thing of wonder, my love. Watching your eyes in that moment as you went over the edge, it’s like looking into pure feeling. So beautiful, it almost aches. [kisses] Thank you for sharing this part of yourself with me, and for letting me share myself with you in return. You make me so unbelievably happy. Truly. Like I haven’t been able to believe.” (Gavin)
Wolf David is so calm and in control it’s almost intimidating to the other wolves.
If Angel tries to take a bone he’s chewing on away, he doesn’t growl. He’ll turn his head to look at them, nose gently nudging their hand away, before going back to gnawing. Of course, Angel is a menace and will try again, but David simply coaxes them to cuddle with him and occupy themselves with his fur, leaving him to chew in peace. He always gets his way.
Wolf David does a lot of nuzzling and curling around Angel to keep them close. His possessive side really shines when he’s shifted, and Angel loves it. They feel badass when they walk around with a giant wolf beside them, and they definitely use this privilege to go on late night walks. David is more than happy to protect them.
David never growls around Angel. He knows he’s scary when he does so and bares his teeth. They know they’re safe around him, but he never wants them to fear him even a little bit. The fear that they felt when he first shifted was something he remembers to this day, and he never wants them to be afraid of him again.
When the pack is play fighting in front of him and tensions rise a little too high, all it takes is for David to prowl slowly in between them and stare, and the fight is immediately broken up. He doesn’t even need to say anything.
Someone that’s hot. Really hot. David chuckles internally as he feels Angel’s desire curl around and seep into his core. It’s really easy to get them worked up. He loves that about them.
Is anyone else missing Gavin or is it just me?
As soon as David woke up, it hit him like a semi truck.
The fatigue, the nausua, everything hurting…
Even rolling over onto his back made everything so much worse.
He managed to yank his pillow out from under his head and smack it to his face, groaning out a long sigh. He could already tell the day was going to be absolute hell.
Without looking, his arm plopped over to try and reach for his mate, only to be met with an empty space next to him. That got him to move, albeit sluggish to not stir something up.
The pillow got moved off his face so he could look over, then around. That's… odd…
"Angel…?" He absolutely despised how croaky and dry his voice sounded, it never gets any easier…
Taking it slow, he managed to sit up and drag a hand down his face. His hair was a mess, his skin felt both clammy and sweaty… yeesh…
He didn't even bother getting a shirt on, the effort was not worth it, as he lazily slid himself out of bed, having to catch himself against the nightstand before he fell back over. He's supposed to this big and tough, rough and tumble leader and here he was, being taken out by the fucking Solstice.
Using the walls to his advantage, he got down the hall. The further he went, the louder some music was going and the sound of someone going about the kitchen caught his attention.
The lights weren't on, thankfully, just the little ones under the cabinets and over the stove. He took notice of the curtains being closed, even the patio door.
His eyes narrowed in thought, there's no way they got up this early to do all this just for him, right? It was considerably later than he likes to get up, but hey, cut him some slack here.
"I was wondering where you went off to," he spoke up, his words sounding awful, only emphasizing how he felt.
Angel glanced over their shoulder for a moment, then took a second to do a double take, "Hey! You weren't supposed to get up!!"
The laugh he attempted was promptly cut short with a grimace, "I think I can get up if I so please, Angel, thank you."
"Nope! No, no, no! Get," they turned the heat down on the stove of whatever they were making, and went over to gently pull him back to bed, "your ass back in that bed! Right now! No ands, ifs, or buts about it."
"Was I this pushy when you were sick?" He joked, stumbling a little over himself before Angel caught him.
"No, but I'm going to be this pushy because I've gotten enough experience with this Solstice to know what to do. And you are staying in bed. I'll handle everything."
"Not exactly all that comforting, I won't lie."
"Ye have little faith in your own fucking mate and spouse here, baby," they kept pushing him along, even promptly smacking his ass to get him going faster… which, if he felt any better, would have gotten some karma back at them.
"You're lucky right now, angel," he looked back at them, "but don't think I won't remember this tomorrow when this has passed over."
"Ohh, I'm so scared," they mused, getting him to sit back once he was at the edge of the bed, "you think that's all that much of a threat to me? Hm? Maybe I want that, have you ever thought about that?"
He huffed a breath, an attempt of a laugh, and got back under the covers, "You're insatiable, y'know that?"
"And yet?" They leaned over to kiss his cheek, "You still married me. So who's really to blame here, hm?"
They were about to leave the room, only to have a hand holding their wrist to keep them.
They sighed, looking back, "I'll be back, I'm just gonna be in the kitchen, baby."
"…Do I want to know what you're attempting to make?"
That earned a smack to his arm, a light one since they knew he didn't feel well, "I have gotten better at it, y'know. You're the one teaching me all these recipes, I've picked some up from Milo and his mate too. I'm not that helpless, baby."
"I-" he trailed off as he sighed, "I know, angel… I know. I'm s-"
A kiss to the corner of his lips shut him up.
"I know, Davey, you're just teasing," Angel took the hand that held their wrist into their own hands, running their thumbs over his knuckles, "just let me do this for you, okay? You're not feeling good, you're always helping me when I'm sick, just let me return the favour… please?"
Tired eyes glanced between their eyes and their hands, then back again. He needs to be doing things. He's got some paperwork he needs to get done, he's got the talk with William on his mind and he needs to tell the others… he hates just… sitting.
But that concerned look in his mate's eyes, that flash of determination to care for him the way he's always doing for them… he couldn't tell them no.
"…Okay."
"Thank you," they brought his hand up to kiss his palm before they set it back down, "I'm almost done, okay? I just hope that it's up to your little standards" they mused, giving him one last kiss before they started back.
"What are you even making?"
"You'll see!"
He watched as they rounded the corner. Another breathy laugh, "Not comforting, hope you know that…" He trailed off as he sat back, getting his phone.
Checking with the others, apparently he was the better of them all, he was the most upright one.
Asher had ended up getting sick the second he tried standing up, his mate used to it by now and had prepared the night before apparently.
Milo and Sweetheart were both down for the count, his mate fading in and out of visibility and him unable to even move.
Sam wasn't much better, but the vamp's focus was more of Darlin' than his own discomfort.
David even checked in on Vincent and his partner, both not even bothering to do a damn thing. Lovely was on a better end of it all, given their Electro energetic core fighting against the vampiric one to keep them with nothing more than just a mild headache. Lucky son of a…
A knock on the door frame got David's attention again. He set his phone back on the nightstand as he looked over, seeing Angel holding a little tray of something.
He raised a brow at it, "Ohh, going fancy with it, hm?"
"Hey, this is easier and I'm gonna take advantage of this since I was the one that bought this thing," they teased as they came into the room, "you were the one that got on my case about it, but it's coming in handy now, huh?"
He rolled his eyes, watching them round the bed to sit up on their side, and setting the tray down. That's when he saw what they made. Pancakes on one plate and some sliced fruit in the other.
"Really?"
Angel stuck their tongue out at him, "Hey! I even made them chocolate chip! I know you're not feeling up to much, so I figured this was something simple enough to convince you."
Okay, after that, the gesture seemed sweeter. What did he do to deserve them…
"I got you some water and something that'll help your stomach," they held a water bottle and a little pill bottle over, "I know it's not much but… I hope it'll help at least some."
He reached over to take the offer, giving them a tired smile, "Just you being here doing all this helps more than you know, angel."
"You're just saying that, I know you are," they muttered, moving the tray over closer to him so they could get up and sit with him.
"I'm not just saying that," he set the water bottle over in the nightstand after taking some of the medicine, "I… know it can't be the easiest thing to deal with when I'm stuck like this every year-"
"David," they cut him off. "I would do anything for you, you know that. You've put up with my bullshit for years, you dealt with me when I'm sick-"
"That's because I fucking love you."
"And I'm doing the same thing, that's where I was going with this. I love you, you know that. Just let me help you the way you've done for me. Okay? Please? I don't have magic, I know, I can't heal you the way Marie or Sam could — though they're in the same damn boat anyway — so I can't do much, but…"
Their words trailed off when he reached over to cup their cheek with his palm, "Hey… this is perfect, okay? I'm more than grateful. I…" a long sigh as he leaned over to laid their forehead against his "Sometimes it's just… hard to show it. I got used to doing everything myself, being the leader after…" His words got choked back, "after Dad died… I still have to get used to this- to having someone to care for me in return. Even after the years with you, I just… it's not my thing, I guess."
They laid their hand over his, moving it so they could kiss the back of it, "Everyone has their vices, baby. There's nothing wrong with that. But you've got to allow yourself this, allow yourself overall to let that so-called weakness show, or you'll break under that pressure. I don't ever want that to happen to you, baby… I just want to help… please?"
As much as he kept wanting to protest it, the energy wasn't there. He sighed, giving in as he kissed the back of their hand in return. "You're lucky you're cute."
"One of my shining attributes," they grinned with a playful bobble of their head.
"Among other things," he added, though trying to sound flirtatious when his voice is stuck like a broken squeaky toy, all it did was make him groan in annoyance and them laugh in amusement.
"Okay, okay, enough of that," they mused, still grinning like a goof, "get your breakfast or I'll get it for you."
"I'm not a child, angel, I'm capable of feeding myself, thank you so very much. I'm not that decrepit like this."
"Ah-ah, you promised to let me take care of you, baby."
"I don't think I formally agreed to anything-"
"Shush," they booped the tip of his nose, "accept it, Davey."
He sighed dramatically but let them still, even if he thought this was dumb. He probably looked like a fool, the only saving grace was that the others weren't there to see it. He'd threaten to kill them if Milo or Ash found out about it.
It wasn't… much but he handled the fruit a tad better. There could always be leftovers to be reheated later, Angel had a few doubts that he'd be having all that much today. After the years of experience and him going into detail of what it felt like for him and the others, they had a decent idea on how the day was going to go.
The way he had them lay when they were sick, he ended up laying back against them, their legs on either side of him, as they held their arms loosely around his waist. They had offered to start up one of his games but he didn't feel up to it.
A few quiet minutes passed by. Every time he asked what they had planned later, they passed by the question with a vague answer. They had something planned but they wouldn't tell him what.
"You're acting weird," he commented, looking up at them, "what's going through that pretty head of yours, hm?"
"Well I was going to wait until tonight to give you this," they began as they leaned over to their nightstand, "but since you're so insistent on it…"
What they brought out was something wrapped, even with a little bow. What do they have planned…
He sat up a little when they held it to him. He gave them a confused look but they didn't move it other than holding it closer to him. They gave him a light nod, telling him it was okay.
He mumbled a quiet, "O…kay…" before he took it and carefully tore the paper off. He got to the back of whatever it was, seeing a stand on the back. More paper off to see it was a frame, a black one with scrolling on the sides…
And a picture of his father behind the glass.
As soon as he saw it, he could feel tears welling up in his eyes, his thumb lightly brushing over the glass.
His face scrunched up in confusion, "I… don't remember this picture of him."
"I know," Angel leaned down to prop their chin on his shoulder, "I asked Ash to get his dad to go through some pictures and send a copy over that Ash knew you didn't have…"
"Ash, you son of a…" The words got choked out by a held back sob, the tears fully flowing down his cheeks. "So he's in on it too?"
"It was Milo's idea, really. We all kind of came together to get something, and Milo suggested this. So it just took off from there."
He didn't know what to say, he couldn't say anything. "Is that… is that why you cleared that space off on the mantle?"
They hummed, "Yeah… I was hoping you didn't notice that before I gave you this."
Through the tears, he managed a soft laugh, "You… are such a brat…"
"I know."
He got up enough to turn and give them a hug, burying his face against their neck. He tried to hold the tears back, but when they started rubbing over his back, he gave up on it.
"I know it's not much, but-"
He shook his head, holding them tighter.
"It's more than you'll ever know…"
Angel sobbing over breakup songs while their husband reads his book next to them in bed.
They crawl into his arms when they’re finished, eyes red and puffy.
“Was it good?”
“Mmhmm.” They blow their nose.
“I’ll buy you the vinyl tomorrow.” He rubs their back and kisses the top of their head.
David melting into a smile when Angel catches his gaze from across the table and gives him a little wave. It’s like the spark returns to his eyes and he looks a few years younger again. Angel can’t help but stifle a giggle at how obviously in love he looked, heart melting into a puddle at his reaction.
It doesn’t matter that they’re in a pack meeting.
Life is too short to try and hide the love they have for one another.
—-
The pack definitely exploits the fact that David is incredibly soft for Angel.
They’ve learnt to choose days when Angel is present to notify David of any bad news, like a financial mistake or a scheduling cancellation. Although David never gets mad at anyone in the pack, having Angel nearby somehow makes the mood less stressful for everyone involved.
So cue Asher hiding behind Angel as he pushes them to David’s office before announcing that he forgot to phase out of his clothes before shifting and ripped his uniform to shreds again, and that he needed a replacement.
David was about to reprimand him, but Angel’s amused giggles had him softening up. The sound never ceases to make his core light up.
Asher got away with a sigh and a “be more careful next time”.
I feel like if any of the redacted couples were to have a child, the child would think their listener parent’s name was the nickname from their partner.
I.e.
“What’s daddy’s name?”
“Elliot!”
“Good, and what’s my name?”
“Sunshine!”
Angel made David so much more approachable since getting together.
Before Angel, getting David to open up was like pulling teeth. He didn’t do small talk, his RBF was the only expression anyone ever saw, and overall he was a scary person to talk to.
However, after meeting Angel, he began to soften up. Don’t get me wrong, David can still be terrifying when he has to be, but he also lets more of his carefree side show. It’s hard to be scared of the big bad Alpha when people see him smiling at Angel. It’s hard not to want to talk to him when people see him laughing with his mate. It’s hard to stop staring when people see him dancing with his partner at the club.
Pack members realize now that David isn’t a stone wall who only cares about Pack business. He cares for his family, and he wants to help them. Seeing him with Angel reminded his pack of his human side. The side that smiles and lets loose and wants to hear what people have to say.
Now, they go to him for everything. They ask him how he’s doing and about his hobbies. They are honest with him about their choices regarding the pack and their future. They tell him drama and make him smile.
Everyone still misses Gabe deeply, but when they see their Alpha happy, they know Gabe isn’t too far away.
"And if you ever come in here again with a god damn opinion, I will shove it so far up your ass, it'll never see the light of day again"
How i imagine angel sounds when they get angry. They go beat red when they're actually mad, usually it ends in alot of yelling and wild hand gestures, and then angry crying once they've made it back to David.
One argument with darlin ended in darlin getting pelted with their own pillows as angel yelled at them over something dumb. It wasn't even an actual thing to get mad over, angel was just overly tired and stressed because of the stuff with quinn and their own job being an ass so they got off work later and later. Darlin made some quipped joke about angels office job being a safe option and angel just started throwing stuff at them. It wasn't even malicious so Sam and David just let them take it out on darlin, it's not like the pillows would do any harm to darlin or the house so they just kinda let the rampage tire itself out
It ended with angel crying because they were so tired and then promptly falling asleep on the couch. Darlin was fine just a little bamboozled about what just happened
Angel becomes especially clingy after an aerobic night, David noticed.
The first time it happened, there was a sense of desperation, interrupted by some hesitation. It felt like they wanted him to stay in bed, but something told them they shouldn’t. He didn’t miss the disbelief in their eyes and the sigh of relief when he cuddled them, prompting them to rest their head on his chest. It took them a few moments to truly rest against him, their body was on edge, not quite sure if they were really allowed.
The second time, his grumpiness got ahead of him and he pushed them off lightly, saying they insatiable and that he was done for the night. He meant it as a joke, even though the tone of his voice didn’t communicate it that way. (Why do I always say it like that?) What confused him was when Angel let go without a word and shuffled to the far edge of the bed with a quiet “sorry”. Like it was instinct. Like they’ve been pushed aside before. He could tell they’ve shut down a little, arms wrapping around their still naked body and curling in on themself.
“Wait, no. I, uh… didn’t mean it like that.”
“It’s ok.”
They dismissed him almost immediately.
David frowned, heart aching to right this wrong somehow. He hated how vulnerable and small they looked, and he hated sitting idly and doing nothing to protect them, even if it’s from him.
The wolf in him was snarling at himself.
“Angel?” He started, a hand reaching out to them.
Angel tensed, and then looked back a little as if acknowledging him.
Slowly, he brushed his hand on their shoulder, noting with relief they didn’t flinch. He took it as a sign to pull the blankets over them, a hand lingering on their skin, not quite sure if he could do more just yet.
“Can I hold you?”
He hated how Angel looked surprised at the question. He hated how they hesitated, eyes searching in his as if they were waiting for him to change his mind, to say he doesn’t want to touch them again.
They nodded, just the slightest bit, and David wasted no time to spoon them, tangling their legs together and pulling them against him with his arms around their waist. He leaned his forehead on their shoulder, taking a deep breath.
“I didn’t mean it like that, I’m sorry.”
“You don’t have to pretend. I know some people would rather not touch after…”
Their pained expression flashed in his mind again, squeezing his heart painfully.
“I do. I always want to hold you.”
“…really?”
He kissed their neck. “I do.”
David smiled slightly when he noticed their tense body relaxing in his arms.
A silent question hung in the air. Angel answered before he could figure out how to ask.
“He’d always leave. Made me feel like he just wanted me there for the fun.” They muttered, not wanting to say it too loud, not wanting to give their past any more room to breathe.
David’s hold on their waist tightened.
“You’re so much more to me, Angel. I love you. I know I’m… prickly with my words sometimes but it doesn’t change the fact that I love you… so much.”
Angel nodded.
“I promise I’ll be better.”
They shuffled and turned around in his arms to face him, a smile on their face making his heart leap.
“You’re perfect the way you are, Davey.”
“No. I’m not, and I know it. I want to change. For you.”
Angel buried their face in his chest, arms tightening around him. He felt his core glow warm with appreciation, a sign from his mate.
From then on, Angel still reached for David after an aerobic night. And David softened, welcoming them and holding them against him, kissing the crown of their head.
He got better at letting go of his gruff front too. He never meant to hurt Angel, but Angel accepted all of him. He didn’t need to pretend anymore.
David lying down and letting Angel straddle his waist because his lap isn’t close enough. His hands trailing down their back as they talk about everything under the sun. He stares at them through half-lidded eyes, a soft smile on his face.
This is what days off are for.
David always pushes it just a little too far.
Not in a mean way, never cruel, but in that smug, knowing way where he tilts his head and says something just to see your reaction.
You’re standing in the kitchen, arms crossed, trying very hard not to smile while he recounts your dramatic reaction to something minor earlier.
“I did not sound like that,” you snap.
“Oh, you absolutely did,” he replies, dropping his voice into an exaggerated imitation of you. “David, this is unacceptable.”
Your jaw drops. “You’re so annoying.”
He grins. That’s the problem. He looks entirely too pleased with himself.
You huff, cheeks warm, and turn on your heel. “I’m done talking to you.”
“Mm-hm,” he hums, amused.
You make it two steps.
Two.
Before his hand hooks gently around your wrist and he tugs you back toward him.
“Davey-”
You don’t even get to finish because suddenly you’re pulled flush against him, his hands settling firmly on your hips. Not rough. Not aggressive. Just certain.
“Don’t walk away from me like that,” he murmurs, smiling down at you.
You try to look offended, but the way his thumbs press lightly into your sides makes it difficult to maintain the pout.
“I’m mad at you,” you insist.
He leans down slightly, brows lifting. “Are you?”
“Yes.”
“For teasing you?”
“Yes.”
He studies your face like he’s examining evidence.
“Don’t be mad.”
It’s unfair how gentle he sounds after being insufferable thirty seconds ago.
You try to twist away, but his grip on your hips tightens just enough to keep you in place. His thumbs rub small circles, grounding, soothing.
“You love when I tease you,” he adds quietly.
“I do not.”
“You do.”
You glare up at him, but your lip is still stuck in that little pout he knows too well.
He dips his head closer, voice lowering. “You’re cute when you’re grumpy.”
“I hate you.”
He smiles. “No, you don’t.”
Your resolve starts crumbling when he rests his forehead against yours, hands still steady at your hips, anchoring you there like you belong.
“C’mon,” he murmurs. “Look at me.”
You try not to.
You fail.
The second your eyes meet his, the teasing is gone. He’s just… there. Warm. Fond. Completely unbothered by your dramatics.
“I’m sorry,” he says, though he’s clearly not that sorry. “Didn’t mean to push it too far.”
You squint. “You absolutely did.”
He chuckles softly. “Maybe a little.”
Your shoulders relax despite yourself.
His thumbs slide slightly higher along your waist, reassuring. “I like when you come back to me.”
“I wasn’t coming back,” you mutter.
He raises an eyebrow. “You always do.”
And that’s the worst part.
Because he’s right.
You let out a quiet sigh, resting your hands on his chest instead of pushing him away.
“Stop being smug,” you mumble.
“Stop being cute.”
“I’m not cute.”
He smiles down at you. “Sure.”
You try to stay mad.
You really do.
But when his hands stay warm and steady on your hips and he leans in just enough to brush his nose against yours, the pout melts into something softer.
“Okay,” you grumble. “Maybe I’m a little less mad.”
He grins like he’s just won something.
“There my angel is,” he says gently.
And just like that, you’re exactly where he wanted you, dragged back, hands on your hips, and no longer walking away.
Angel wanted to try out that TikTok trend where you blindfold your partner and have him kiss you to see if he knows your height.
And of course David knew
“Ok now go.” Angel bit their lip in anticipation.
David smirked, hand pulling them closer by their waist, and leaned down, even dipping them a little, his lips meeting theirs in perfect harmony. The kiss was passionate as he licked their lips, prompting them to open their mouth and allow him entry.
By the time he was done, Angel was breathless and in a daze. They pretty much forgot what they were even doing.
“Was that meant to be hard?” David said, holding them up to support their jelly legs, a victorious smirk on his shiny lips. He removed the blindfold, using that hand to lean against the door frame and tower over them.
“I, uh… think I need you to do that again. For um, research purposes.”
“Mmm… research purposes.” He leaned down once more, lips ghosting theirs. His arm around their waist pulled them up into him so that they were on their tip toes.
And he sealed their lips once more in a kiss.
Angel with a fever being upset by everything.
This sickness was particularly bad, and while they rarely got sick, they were definitely taken out this time around.
Their body ached and was simultaneously cold and hot. They couldn’t sleep because they couldn’t breathe, and if they did, a fever dream would wake them up shortly after.
David knew they were miserable, but there wasn’t much he could do. The doctor said to let the medicine do its job and make sure they were resting. David wanted to yell in that doctor’s face. How the hell could his mate rest if the medicine wasn’t working and existing felt like agony?
He clacked away at his laptop, the door to his office cracked open to listen for Angel’s coughs and tired mumbling. He furrowed his brow at the computer screen, trying to get the plans together for their next gig, when sniffling brought his attention right back.
Angel stood in the doorway, tears running down their cheeks. David was instantly up.
“What? What happened?” He asked, cupping their warm face in his hands.
“I had another dream,” they sniffled, “I don’t know what’s real anymore- I can’t sleep and I feel horrible and-“
David smoothed their hair down. They looked so tired. He scooped them up with ease, bringing them back to his desk and sitting in his chair. He knew his mate didn’t want rest anymore, they wanted a solution.
“This is real. You’re awake, Angel,” he assured them finally.
It didn’t settle them, “I don’t feel awake. Everything hurts but I can’t sleep and the medicine isn’t helping-“
David let them continue talking, large hands continuing to rub circles on their back and arms. Angel eventually tired themself out, and busied themself with the dog tag necklace David wore. They pushed the tags around on the chain, the sound and motion distracting the sick parasite in their body. David sighed with relief as Angel settled down in his arms and toyed with the necklace. Their tears dried on their cheeks, and they eventually fell limp against his shoulder. He refused to move, not wanting to wake them and risk another feverish episode.
Angel would kick this sickness eventually, but for now, they simply needed their mate.
