I love when court cases are called things like person vs. state because I like to imagine a single person fighting a whole state on their own out of sheer rage
In the UK it can be ‘Person vs. The Queen’.

Unlisting All My YouTube Videos
I will soon be making the videos on my youtube channel ‘Unlisted’. This means they will not be able to be searched for on YouTube or through Google.
Unfortunately, a member of my immediate family has become aware of a bald patch on my scalp. I fear she may be likely trying to research why I may have it, and I’m simply not ready/don’t want to discuss it. The idea of telling my family makes me feel embarrassed, stupid, pathetic and so very ashamed. I realise when it come to mental health it’s ‘important to talk’ but it is so difficult.
The thought of her finding key words related to my channel mortifies me. I feel she’d likely only think me pathetic. Seeing as my video “How do I know I have Dermatillomania?...” is one of the first to come up when searching for Derma, I’ve decided to Unlist it. Maybe for just a while or maybe indefinitely. Originally I made my vlogs for others with the condition to be able to learn and share in their experiences so knowing that this won’t be visible on YouTube searches is upsetting.
My videos will however be viewable through visiting the ‘Playlists’ tab at the top of my channel and seeing them all through there.
I know this is not practicing what so many preach, but I’m at a time in my life with no job and these conditions help me get through the weeks. I feel they are the only gratification I have left. Ironically: the only thing keeping me sane and feeling alive.
I’m very sorry that I’m not doing what is ‘right’. But for me, right now, I won’t allow those around me to know of these conditions.

I’ll be at tlcbfrb‘s #TLCLondon Conference tomorrow. Looking forward to it!
Hi guys. Hope you’re all doing well. I’ll speak soon! x
Pleease keep posting and updating Millie, your blog and yt channel are awesome :)
Thanks Anon. It means a lot. Especially today.
Lately I thought I had been doing really well. But then yesterday all my good work was undone. Thanks for the kind words. x
I know this is like asking if there is a magical way to cure this...but is there medication? Is there something I can do to stop? I try to tell myself its not so bad..but it is. I know where each scab is and I count them everyday. I use my nails, tweezers, nail clippers, needles, and even my own teeth. I have been doing this for years, and finally had the courage to research. I need help. I don't know what to do.
Hello Anon.
I'm sorry to say, but No. There is no magical cure. Oh if only!It won't go away over night and the road to recovery - like most mental disorders - is not without struggles / relapses.
You can be given medication to help with anxiety - which may relate to other conditions including Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. But this is not a means to an end. It is usually a supplement used with therapy treatment.
Well done for finding the courage.
I remember when I was 14 and I first googled: 'compulsively picking my skin' and was met with an array of images which - at the time - did not reflect how my skin was. So the fact that you have found my blog (and there are many more like it) means there are so many people here who understand, relate, will discuss openly and help you.
From here, keep researching. Get to know more of the people in the community - publicly or anonymously, whatever you feel comfortable with.
Then if you want to seek professional treatment with a doctor, call your local General Practitioners Surgery and ask to make an appointment with a doctor. 99.9% of the time they don't ask what the appointment concerns but if they do tell them: "To talk about my mental heath".Make sure you book a time which you can easily keep to - you don't want to be in a rush and just blurt out a load of un-planned incoherent ramble at the doctor. Take a notebook with important points. Tell them about what you've found out about Dermatillomania. Be aware that this condition is not too well known and you may need a second appointment to recap and answer a few of the doctors questions. If the doctor says it's not Dermatillomania - that's OK! You can follow through with treatment with whatever they have diagnosed. If it works: great! If not: let them know and they'll move on to looking into something else.
Treatment can consist of a number of options. Medication and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) being the most common and effective. CBT is held with a therapist whom you visit on a regular basis.
In the meantime or if you decide not to contact a doctor, I have found journalling, blogging and channeling your emotions into some form of artwork to be extremely therapeutic. Personally I found that it allows you to become more confident with Derma and can relieve any stress and anxiety it brings.
Hope this helps. I'd love to hear how you get along. x
I think I may have dermatillomania. I pick at my skin without even realizing. I have sores/scabs that have lasted months because I stop picking at them. I bite and pick my fingernails until the are like little nubs. Sometimes when I am upset I also pick to self harm although most of the time I'm just picking my skin without realizing it. Should I talk to a doctor about getting tested/diagnosed or is it not worth it?
Hello :) Your second and second-to-last sentences resonate strongly with me.
Yes. Absolutely. If you feel as though you can benefit from support then contact your doctor. Remember: seeing a doctor is not just about getting a diagnosis. There are many people with conditions which are still currently un-named but have contacted their doctor for treatment. It's one thing to be diagnosed, and another to be treated.
From hearing various other people's experiences with diagnosis, Dermatillomania is still fairly unknown/misunderstood by a number of medical professionals. I have a close friend who is a doctor, who has been treating people for 2-3 years now and has only come across Derma twice. Once through looking at a case study at university, where it was expressed as a secondary symptom in young children, and me. I'm not saying that all medical professionals will be in a similar situation, as more experienced General Practitioners may have certainly come across patients with the condition. However if I were you, I would expect to have more than one appointment: one to talk about what you believe you have (i.e. Dermatillomania) and another for them to go away and look into the condition (through case studies/other more knowledgeable medical professionals) and come back to you more informed on it.
So: Yes. If you want it, it is 100% worth it. x
what to do if you see someone picking:
don’t:
point it out
tell them to stop
physically try to stop them from picking
try to guilt them into not picking at that moment (eg. “please dont do this you know it hurts yourself :(“
do:
provide a distraction, physical or verbally
offer them something they enjoy to do
if you acknowledge their picking remind them that it’s ok if they can’t stop and you can help them clean up afterwards
this is all i can think of rn but feel free to add on!

i have picked at my lips all my life til they bleed usually, and in the last year i started picking at my ears. do i have dermatillomania? i thinks so but i dont pick at the rest of my face? its really bad and my ears look so gross and i am super self consious about it. any tips for how i can not do it at work?
Your comment suggests you find it difficult to stop/control and that it makes you feel negative, so yes, I would say you have Dermatillomania.
My best advice is to keep fidget toys at hand! I carry two small bean bags which fit into my palm and I swear by them. :) In the mean time, carry a small tube of antiseptic cream or moisturiser with you. If you have the urge to pick, massage them into the damaged areas and keep your hands slightly greasy so it’s physically more difficult to pick. It may not necessary stop you picking but it will make it more difficult while also aiding healing.
I pick and bite the skin around my fingernails constantly while working too and my best advice would be to keep idle hands busy. x
Thank you so much for everything. You're beautiful, and you've helped me with my derma.
♥
Finally another #SkinUpdate!
I love your tutorial on how to make the little bean bags - will definitely be doing that!
Yay! :D Let me know when/if you make them and if you find them useful. x
