Hi everyone! I’m redoing my introduction post since it’s been awhile since I used this account, and so that it’s a bit more formal! 

The Basics: 

My name is Mcafee (but most people just call me Mac)

I use she/her pronouns

I just graduated from college (ahhhh!!!)

Academics:

I went to a small liberal arts school in the pacific northwest 

I majored in History and minored in French

I studied abroad in Dijon France (yes, like the mustard!) for a semester. It was a wonderful experience, and I would be happy to answer any questions about studying abroad in general or in France specifically (even if study abroad is on hold for awhile) 

Most of my history research focused on 19th century American tourism in the Caribbean but I also did a lot of research on comic book history, specifically Captain America! 

I really love research and hope to apply to History PhD programs in a few years.

Personal Life:

In my free time I like to bake and cook, listen to podcasts, go bouldering or running, and talk to my friends. I’m pretty extroverted and a real busy body so having to stay at home all of the time has been a bit of an adjustment, but I’ve been trying to lean into the chance to slow down a bit

I don’t watch a ton of TV, but I do have a soft spot for The Bachelor (most of the podcasts I listen to center on it so soft spot might be an understatement). 

My friend and I had a show on our college radio station where we talked about rewatching Glee as queer women and played music from the show. It was one of my favorite things I did in college!

I am super into personality tests! I am an ESFJ in Myers-Briggs and a 3w2 on the enneagram! If you know of any other cool personality tests, please send them my way!

Studyblr:

I have never had any sort of tumblr account that I have used consistently, so my main goal is just to be active! 

Most of my studying right now will focus on brushing up on my French skills in preparation for (hopefully!) going to Martinique to work as an English language assistant for a year! I am also going to start studying for the GRE :/

In 2006 a high school English teacher asked students to write a famous author and ask for advice. Kurt Vonnegut was the only one to respond - and his response is magnificent: “Dear Xavier High School, and Ms. Lockwood, and Messrs Perin, McFeely, Batten, Maurer and Congiusta:

I thank you for your friendly letters. You sure know how to cheer up a really old geezer (84) in his sunset years. I don’t make public appearances any more because I now resemble nothing so much as an iguana.

What I had to say to you, moreover, would not take long, to wit: Practice any art, music, singing, dancing, acting, drawing, painting, sculpting, poetry, fiction, essays, reportage, no matter how well or badly, not to get money and fame, but to experience becoming, to find out what’s inside you, to make your soul grow.

Seriously! I mean starting right now, do art and do it for the rest of your lives. Draw a funny or nice picture of Ms. Lockwood, and give it to her. Dance home after school, and sing in the shower and on and on. Make a face in your mashed potatoes. Pretend you’re Count Dracula.

Here’s an assignment for tonight, and I hope Ms. Lockwood will flunk you if you don’t do it: Write a six line poem, about anything, but rhymed. No fair tennis without a net. Make it as good as you possibly can. But don’t tell anybody what you’re doing. Don’t show it or recite it to anybody, not even your girlfriend or parents or whatever, or Ms. Lockwood. OK?

Tear it up into teeny-weeny pieces, and discard them into widely separated trash recepticals. You will find that you have already been gloriously rewarded for your poem. You have experienced becoming, learned a lot more about what’s inside you, and you have made your soul grow.

When I was 15 I spent a month working on an archeological dig.  I was talking to one of the archeologists one day during our lunch break and he asked those kinds of “getting to know you” questions you ask young people: Do you play sports?  What’s your favorite subject?   And I told him, no I don’t play any sports.  I do theater, I’m in choir, I play the violin and piano, I used to take art classes.  

And he went WOW.  That’s amazing!  And I said, “Oh no, but I’m not any good at ANY of them.” 

And he said something then that I will never forget and which absolutely blew my mind because no one had ever said anything like it to me before: “I don’t think being good at things is the point of doing them.  I think you’ve got all these wonderful experiences with different skills, and that all teaches you things and makes you an interesting person, no matter how well you do them.”

And that honestly changed my life.  Because I went from a failure, someone who hadn’t been talented enough at anything to excel, to someone who did things because I enjoyed them.  I had been raised in such an achievement-oriented environment, so inundated with the myth of Talent, that I thought it was only worth doing things if you could “Win” at them.

here’s a gentle reminder to accept that some bad things happened this year. maybe you were heartbroken, maybe you failed a test, tried your best to no avail, lost someone, made some bad decisions, said things you didn’t mean. some weren’t within your control, some things you can learn from, that’s ok. accepting them means you can move on and begin the new year with a new slate. don’t carry this weight with you into next year and blame yourself forever for little mistakes everyone makes. you don’t deserve this. you’re only human. focus on good things that happened, they’re easy to overlook. you did better than you think, met new people and overcame many challenges. be proud of yourself this year.

for as much as studyblr may have its faults, it’s a pretty sizable online space that tells young girls that the absolute coolest thing you can do is be smart and work hard and believe in yourself and i think that’s pretty great

I say this literally all the time, but when it comes to getting work done, starting is truly the hardest part.

today I was so discouraged to get any work done because of the overwhelming amount of studying I have to do this weekend for two midterms this upcoming week. just the idea of having to study for these exams left me feeling hopeless. sometimes your body/mind tells you that you cannot push yourself any further.

after scribbling into my planner and shuffling notes around, I decided to take a walk into the city and grab some pizza for dinner. when I came back, I was in a better mental space to make some real progress. after stepping back, taking a breath, and setting some broad goals, I was able to take things one baby step at a time. and baby steps really do go a long way.

so, if you’re feeling stressed, anxious, overwhelmed, and hopeless tonight, please remember to take a step back. taking a break is never a waste of your time. clear your mind, and find even the smallest entrance into a positive headspace.

i’m tired of the dark academia aesthetic being co-opted by the humanities students. where are the dark academia stem mayors? give me a group of physics kids going insane whilst trying discover the secrets of the universe, chemistry kids doing experiments with questionable substances in abandoned laboratories, biologists trying to discover the secret of life. there’re so many possiblilities

life isn't stagnant. if you're in a bad spot right now, it'll pass. things are always changing and growing and that's good. it can seem scary, but change is inevitable, and it can be positive. the future is uncertain, but good things are coming for you.
