Salvete Omnes! Thought I’d make a latin masterpost as I wasn’t sure how many resources there were on tumblr for latin…? Just some tips and resources for ppl starting out! Any questions, feel free to ask me! 

THIS IS A POST for ppl starting out, currently learning click here (once i get round to it eep sorry EDIT : I’m sorry but I don’t think I will be able to get round to it any time soon :( ! If you have any questions though as a current learner, send me an ask like ‘yo i’m learning latin, any tips’ and i’ll pop down a few pointers! I just don’t have much time to make a proper master post sorry <3 

Some tips and resources for you lovelies 

Cambridge Latin course (the main textbooks I used in my five years of Latin) have some free online resources here that complement their course but might be worth checking out as a taster! Stories and such for translation! (all words have a translation so that saves time for ppl just starting though I don’t recommend relying on it if you want to build up your vocab) 

You don’t have to learn how to speak it [no speaking exams i think if you wanna take it for a qualification] but general tips: C is said like a K eg. cepit (he/she/it threw) is not said sepit , it’s said kepit (this is actually really annoying because julius caesar = see-zerr in my mind yet technically it should be more like kaiser i know weird) 

Harry Potter cool stuff! Like ‘Expecto Patronum’ = I wait for/expect a patron/protector and it’s v. cool because patronus is the normal form and patronum is the accusative form as the ‘waiting’ is being done to it. Languages are cool. [Sibyls were oracles so Sibyll Trelawny makes sense!] [Also there’s a latin version of HP so.]

No capital letters expect for names!! So that makes them easy to recognise!! :) 

Tenses and declensions are v. important in latin!! Word order doesn’t make a great difference in terms of translation (though verb tends to go at end of a sentence) so you gotta know and learn your tenses and declensions. 

[O   S   T   MUS   TIS    NT] reciting tenses out loud is very useful for remembering! We had to recite the present, imperfect, perfect tenses at the start of each lesson 

Declensions are these cool things that sort things into families (bit like french but easier tbh) - you can recognise which declension from the ending of the word most times (gen rules : 1st declension female, 2nd male, 3rd the whatever they want pot)

Derivations are your friend! e.g. canis = dog aka canine, hortus = garden aka horticulture! Helpful for remembering vocab! Make links in your brain and the meaning will follow! 

A website that I found that seems legit and a good starting point for ppl who have need some structure as to where to start ALSO THEIR REFERENCE CHARTS!!! IMPORTANT!!! 

If you know a romance language, like spanish + french, then you might see links between the languages! like the verb être in french has a similar pattern to esse (to be) in latin. Useful for reinforcing both languages (and latin is the root of these languages so… :D) 

As with any language, practice practice!!! 

Another website that links some good resources [not all of them work as bit outdated – with this though as long as links work, the stuff won’t be ‘incorrect’ because it’s old… like latin is v. old language lol don’t worry]

Handouts on grammar, vocab etc that I wish I had had… the exercises (scroll down!!!!) may be interesting for self learners!!

Also, don’t worry about ë / ē (dots and lines over words) they’re mainly to help with speaking and you don’t need to consider them when trying to learn to read latin 

ALSO WRITING LATIN IS RATHER COMPLICATED (easy sentences are manageable, just don’t try to write essays XD) STICK TO TRANSLATING TEXTS  FIRST to build up your vocab and get your grammar good!!

Latin wiktionary  This is in latin and kind of intimidating but you can always just bathe in the beauty that is the latin language.

A very neat website (linked to main page because it also has also ancient languages resources if you are interested) that has resource lists [way better than any i could make and also gives a description of the resource ] that you should check out!! [again where WAS THIS when i was learning latin…? obviously didn’t use all the resources i could have had access to *grrrr*]

What to do if you suddenly find yourself homeless

FOOD

Find your nearest food bank or mission, for food

grocery stores with free samples, bakeries + stores with day-old bread

different fast food outlets have cheaper food and will generally let you hang out for a while.

some dollar stores carry food like cans of beans or fruit

SHELTER

Sleeping at beaches during the day is a good way to avoid suspicion and harassment

sleep with your bag strapped to you, so someone can’t steal it

Some churches offer short term residence

Find your nearest homeless shelter

Look for places that are open to the public

A large dumpster near a wall can often be moved so that flipping up the lids creates an angled shelter to stay dry

HYGIENE

A membership to the YMCA is usually only 10$, which has a shower, and sometimes laundry machines and lockers.

Public libraries have bathrooms you can use

Dollar stores carry low-end soaps and deodorant etc.

Wet wipes are all purpose and a life saver

Local beaches, go for a quick swim

Some truck stops have showers you can pay for

Staying clean is the best way to prevent disease, and potentially get a job to get back on your feet

Pack 7 pairs of socks/undies, 2 outfits, and one hooded rain jacket

OTHER

How I study for a big test!

this year is my first one at university, so i think it would be really nice to share with all of you the steps that i follow when i have an importan exam!

first thing that i need to tell you is that is very importan to have enough time to study for your exam because otherwise you are going to be more stressed than normal!

so here i leave you the steps that i follow to study for a big test, i hope you find it helpful!

first of all i read all my notes and then i underline the most importants parts

when i underline everything, i do a list of the most importants topics of the subject (that helps me to have a mental guide of the important things to write down on the exam)

 i read everything over and over again till i fully understand everything!

if there is something i don’t  fully understand i try to ask someone from my class or my teacher

once i understand everything, or almost everything, i do mind maps. In this link you can learn how to mind map :) 

if the subject requires memorize, i use the blank sheet method which involves taking out a blanck sheet and writting down everything you need to know about a topic without looking at your notes. i found this method really useful

once a know everything i make flashcards (only i do it if i need to learn definitions) 

and finally, to revise the topic a just read all my notes, mind maps, flashcards, etc. that i have done 

and that’s everything i do to prepare myself for a big exam! i hope that you find it useful! and remember that exams are important but you also need time for yourself so if you are feeling stressed just relax a little bit, watch your favourie show, talk with some friends, listen to music or just go for a walk!!!

🌄Morning Witchcraft☀️: how to connect to the elements

These are some of my tips for connecting to the elements in the morning before school, work, busy days, or just a day at home. It’s also handy for witches like me who prefer to work in the morning and daytime 🌞

☁️Air-

💨wake up at dawn if you can (dawn is the time that correspondes with air)

💨pick a perfume that correspondes with your intent for the rest of the day

💨listen to some music to set intent for the day and energize yourself

💨get some fresh air and let the crisp morning air invigorate and center you

💨light incense that correspondences with your intent of the day

💨enjoy the morning bird chirping

💨do a daily divination reading to get a feel for what to expect for the rest of the day

💨incorporate almonds, honey, strong scented herbs like dill, or eggs in your breakfast

Water🌊-

💧have a cup of tea or some water when you wake up

💧take a shower or bath and let it cleanse you

💧take a morning swim if you can

💧moisturize with lotion that correspondes with your intent for the day

💧make a water bottle of infused water (with the herbs/fruits of your intent) to carry around and keep you hydrated for the day

💧collect morning dew

💧pick a seashell that correspondes with your intent for the day to carry around with you

💧sing! (to connect to mermaids and warm up your voice for the day)

💧incorporate apples, berries, salt, fish, or avocado in your breakfast

Earth🌳-

🌿take a walk or jog

🌿do some yoga

🌿pick a crystal that correspondes with your intent for the day to carry with you

🌿ground yourself

🌿take care of your plants (water them, talk to them, etc.)

🌿do a prosperity spell for the day

🌿spend time with your pets

🌿use plant based products or make your own if you can (like shampoo, soap, makeup, etc.)

🌿incorporate nuts, beans, roots (like ginger), and greens (like spinach and kale) in your breakfast

Fire🔥-

🕯light a candle to set your intent for the day

🕯enjoy the morning sunshine, feel it’s warmth

🕯do some makeup or fashion magic when you’re getting ready

🕯meditate with the Sun

🕯take vitamins and/or medications

🕯stay warm with hot teas, hot showers, blankets, etc. (the morning can be a bit chilly)

🕯use the sunshine as a positivity and happiness spell and let it charge you for the day

🕯carry a tealight with you (you never know when you’ll need one)

🕯incorporate citrus and spices (like cinnamon, peppers, etc) into your breakfast

- I am productive

- I am intelligent

- I pass all of my tests perfectly

exaggerate the affirmations as much as you can

Light those candles when you study. This is your time. So get as comfy as you want and with enough determination you will do great!

Magical School Tips

•Draw memory sigils on your supplies or yourself on test or quiz days •Enchant pencils and pens so you don’t lose them, or they don’t run out of lead or ink quickly •Put glamours on uniforms so they look good, don’t wrinkle, etc. •Doodle study sigils on study guides, notes, or even textbooks if you bought them or get to keep them •Put speed, agility, etc. spells or sigils on gym uniforms or shoes •Put good herbs for memory in a sleep sachet the night before exams, test, or quizzes •Enchant student IDs so you don’t lose or damage them •Bring potions for energy, memory, focus, etc. in water bottles, travel coffee cups, thermoses, etc.
