SotR is a realisation. A realisation that the rebellion didn’t start with Katniss. That all the people we see supporting her or helping her have all been wanting to fight but they’ve been failing. That there weren’t merely “rumours” of a revolution but there were many active plans playing out and failing.

It’s a reminder that the perfect Hunger Games we saw in the first hg book was an illusion because we had Katniss as our narrator. We didn’t have Haymitch, hell, we didn’t even have someone like Peeta because these people played the games. Katniss didn’t.

Katniss was introduced to us as a mad, simple, naive girl who literally only survived because of others. She didn’t know how much her taking Prim’s place mattered because she didn’t realise what it meant to everyone who came before her. To everyone who had heard rumours of how the last District 12 victor actually fought his games. No, Katniss had just kept her head down, hunting and providing for her family.

See, she grew up way before the Games got to her. She’d already lived through her dad’s death and watched it destroy her once lively mom. Haymitch didn’t have to go through that. Lucy Gray didn’t have to go through that. They were both angry, yes, but at the Capitol. Katniss? She was first and foremost angry at her mom. At her dad. She knew who was to blame but she had too much to do and deal with to think about that. She was already jaded in a way that the Games couldn’t touch.

Peeta? He was Haymitch. He knew what he was getting into and realised he was just on a chess board with no control. So, he adapted. He played the knight, the rook, the king, the pawn. Katniss? She just… did. Changing directions, not playing the piece she was assigned because she didn’t realise that’s what was going on. Remember her surprise at the crown twisting into two after the Games?? She was so oblivious. Until Catching Fire where everything caught up to her. Where everything so many other people had been waiting and working for caught up to her.

SotR is a history book. Rewritten and edited and published as a piece of fact. SotR is a mirror and it’s a reflection of what actually happens vs what ends up being shown. SotR is the playbook of those in control of any and every kind of media that we come in touch with. SotR is a wake up call and I truly don’t know how many will see it as such.

I crouch in front of him, pulling his cuffed hands from his face. «Peeta?» His eyes are like black pools, the pupils dilated so that the blue irises have all but vanished. The muscles in his wrists are hard as metal.

«Leave me,» he whispers. «I can't hang on.»

«Yes. You can!» I tell him.

Peeta shakes his head. «l'm losing it. I'll go mad. Like them.»

Like the mutts. Like a rabid beast bent on ripping my throat out. And here, finally here in this place, in these circumstances, I will really have to kill him.

And Snow will win. Hot, bitter hatred courses through me. Snow has won too much already today.

It's a long shot, it's suicide maybe, but I do the only thing I can think of. I lean in and kiss Peeta full on the mouth. His whole body starts shuddering, but I keep my lips pressed to his until I have to come up for air. My hands slide up his wrists to clasp his. «Don't let him take you from me.»

Peeta's panting hard as he fights the nightmares raging in his head. «No. I don't want to...»

I clench his hands to the point of pain. «Stay with me.»

His pupils contract to pinpoints, dilate again rapidly, and then return to something resembling normalcy. «Always,» he murmurs. /// MOCKINGJAY, CHAPTER 22

Maysilee Donner was the canary.

In Catching Fire, we learn Maysilee had a canary that her parents later gave to Katniss's mother:

Historically, canaries were used in coal mines to detect carbon monoxide. If the canary stopped singing, something was wrong, and the miners needed to evacuate. Beetee says the same thing in text:

Katniss explains further:

"And my mother inheriting her songbird."

Later in Catching Fire, we learn Maysilee died via a throat injury, likely stopping her breathing, just like a canary.

It's telling Collins gave Maysilee Donner, a merchant class girl, a canary, a bird that is "intuitive" and can sense things "before anyone else".

It's also interesting how Katniss's mother, who later "inherited" the canary, stopped speaking when her husband died. It could be that her mother was privy to the things that Maysilee saw long before anyone else. Maybe with the death of her husband, Mrs. Everdeen saw the writing on the wall Maysilee had penned long ago, long before the arena. Maybe that's why she was so grief stricken as opposed to Gale's mother.

As a side note, there's a heartbreaking line about canaries in this Smithsonian magazine article about how "many miners cared deeply for their canary companions" to the point of inventing special cages to get them oxygen immediately after they pass out. I wonder if Haymitch tried to resuscitate Maysilee, even if he knew it was pointless.

Reminder that the majority of characters in the hunger games are canonically minors. Many of the cast members were minors during filming. Saying shit like “why didn’t katniss and Peeta have sex in catching fire?” Is weird af. She was 17 in that book.
