...When you can’t say both “pretty” and “black” in the same sentence without some of your male friends having to have to interrupt. I am sorry that I find other people who aren’t Asian or White (or a mixture of both) to be pretty.

It is extremely taxing to feel that black women always get the short end of the stick...I need more black friends.

The Token Black Girl #7

I need to quit my job.

My boss is extremely manipulative and actually calls me and my other co-worker “stupid” and “an idiot” for minor errors. I haven’t been to work in a month and half of our menu changed. This means that I am not familiar with anything thus I will make errors. I was working with my boss on my first day back and I made two errors (note: the store wasn’t busy).

She then grabbed the equipment out of my hand, told me to stand in the corner of the store and not move one footstep. Not only did this feel humiliating, but even the customer gave me a look that they knew what my boss did was unnecessary. After she finished making the drinks, she started quizzing me on the new items when I am not familiar with them at all. When I got them wrong, she told me this specifically:

“This is why I don’t trust you to work at the bar area. If you keep being stupid, how can I put you to work?”

I don’t want  my boss’ business to crumble because she is a very hardworker, but she is extremely stressful to work. It doesn’t help that she makes stereotypical “black jokes” which do not fly with me at all...it doesn’t matter if she is another POC, she tells us to be more cautious of our black customers...and I’M BLACK! Ridiculous.

Completely dismissing something that someone is clearly excited to show you, in my opinion, is one of the lowest things a person can do.

The Token Black Girl #6

I really believe one of my “friends” has grown to hate me. She gives me the worst cold shoulder and it is very noticeable. She doesn’t look me in the eyes anymore but will always have something negative to say to me. Due to that, I avoid her. Anytime there is a gathering, she always tries to blame me for things (some which I have never done, so she just blatantly lies to make me feel like an idiot) or give me unnecessary attitude. I don’t understand why she is like this to me, but I am fed up.

I have known this for a while but I really feel that I should leave my group of “friends”. Either they are very ignorant towards issues regarding mental health, black issues, or just each others feelings...or they will falsify a story to make the rest hate on one particular person in the group or make fun of them unnecessarily.

Now, I just ignore certain people. They consider it me “choosing favourites” when really...I have serious mental health issues and do not need particular people causing me to have a panic attack every encounter I have with them. I am tired of that lifestyle.

I can’t believe that this kid actually told me in a serious tone, “did you know it is easier for black people to get into university?” Oh great, yeah, let’s tell that to the only black person (not to mention the only female) in that group call.

Wow, I need to drop some “friends” and fast. I am tired of my efforts in anything being downplayed because I am black.

I don’t understand how my so called “male friends” can just call women “ugly” if they are considered too thin or a little on the heavy side. Preference is one thing, but being crude is another.

I also get riled up when they only deem white and Asian women beautiful. Sure, they are very beautiful, but the anti-blackness I get from them just screams “self-esteem dropper”.
