I absolutely love that Kaladin has parents. Like yes, he still has to deal with his dad going “all right mr glowy. Tell me again why you arent a surgeon”, and he gets to mope like the 20 year old teenager he is
''what if my writing isn't good eno--'' what if it's a reflection of your soul. what if it has a place in this world. what if you write it anyway
kaladin and szeth do have a few things in common. for one thing they are both people who, when asked what their "body count" is, would start listing people they've killed
<- OP u can’t hide these in the tags
the silmarillion is wild because you read it and you're like huh okay, and then you read lotr and it turns out everyone's just going around doing their own thing while the surviving elves are living through the final chapters of a post-apocalyptic horror story
rivendell's a pretty chill place, right? everyone gets along splendidly. dream retirement home et cetera. solid chance the guy you're having afternoon tea with has either survived or personally committed war crimes. also the reason it's so chill is elrond has this magic ring that makes it so the whole place exists slightly outside normal time
galadriel's been around since the beginning, like, for pretty much all of middle-earth's history you understand, she has Seen it all and despite what you may have been led to believe is at all times this close to snapping. also the reason lothlorien is so chill is she has this magic ring that makes it so the whole place exists slightly outside normal time
i can't emphasize enough how much of a post-apocalyptic horror story thranduil lives in. homeland destroyed and half his people massacred. has fucken sauron in his backyard and the spawn of the primordial beast that eats light puttering about on his lawn. a dragon lives next door. does NOT have a magic ring and is therefore obliged to rule over his murderforest in normal time
just so we're all on the same page here, legolas' day job before joining the fellowship was to hunt the spawn of the primordial beast that eats light and it's not like, a big deal or anything. he just has to do it. he's used to it.
'elves are leaving middle-earth and it's so sad :(' they have ptsd samwise.
“Jesper Hendriks” “Wylan Fahey” “Kaz Ghafa” “Inej Rietveld” all possibilities make me giddy. They all sound beautiful.
My reply to @deedoesstuff kept evolving so now I’m just adding to the post. From the comments:
…they’re both so good. But I do actually have a favourite scenario:
I’m such an angry feminist so I do on principle love configurations of “woman keeps her name” for a lot of couples. Beyond that, there is something about Kaz taking “Ghafa” in any way he can—(it’s a historical setting, they’re an international couple, we don’t have good evidence of Suli custom? I do not know how taking her name might go legally or socially in either of their countries). This especially works in a world where they either move to join her family in Ravka for some reason—I do not think this makes sense for either of them—or they have her empty nester parents move to Kerch—which does potentially make a lot of sense: there’s canonically a large Suli diaspora in Ketterdam and I imagine they’d be as clingy as they can manage after their miraculous reunification with Inej. “Ghafa” nominally ties Kaz to other living family members for the first time in…so many years. There’s a new network for him. Inej’s world doesn’t change, it just finally gets to fold him in. So, other than maybe being more impractical for them, I do still like this.
However. There’s something I’m always leaning towards in Inej taking “Rietveld”—(especially if they stick with Kerch as homebase, which is, unfortunately, the only thing that makes sense to me, even independently for Inej)—because that’s kind of like the most sentimental victory lap for her; He’s more than taken down his “armour” for Inej. He trusts her with a part of his identity that he buried forever ago because he couldn’t even handle it himself. And now she gets to assert she wants to take it to celebrate how far he’s come for her and everything he’s done for her and himself. She’s sort of giving him something—full support, her own bit of sacrifice, her own trust—in return for all the trust and gifts he’s given her, like “you made it, it’s safe now. You have a family: you have me.”
Tangent: I do think gift giving is central to Kanej and that that is significant. Gifts stand in opposition to transaction, and I think the literal scarring (Inej) and cultural scarring (Kaz) from the everything-and-everyone-is-transactional view obviously makes that relevant. Gift giving is also what I mean by sacrifice; when you don’t have it all, when you’re stuck in survival-mode, it doesn’t make any sense in a transactional/competitive worldview to give without receiving. It is radical and sacrificial to care to give. And, last, of course, there is the crow of it all. Crows presenting shiny objects as gifts and whatnot. So it’s part of the symbolic identity that ties them together to.
And I think “Rietveld”—(unless Kaz switches to using it over Brekker publicly beforehand for some currently unfathomable reason)—is a new start for both of them. “Brekker” is what could read as Inej shoved into Kaz’s identity and “Ghafa” is what could read as Kaz shoved into Inej’s. But “Rietveld” means Kaz reconstructing identity along with Inej, even though, yes, it is/was his name, and I really like that mutual discovery. They’re (re)building something at the same time, as a team. Using “Rietveld” means Kaz got to the point of all-walls-down with Inej. And it means Inej got to the point of feeling safe and whole in Kerch and with a (*her) Kerch man. So them both taking “Rietveld”—even if it remains a very private thing—is part of Kanej’s happiest ending to me.
Hey…. Hey… Characters covered in blood, okay? You remember characters covered in blood?? You used to love characters covered in blood
"Her mind refused to accept what it was seeing, because it could not be Kaine Ferron. His hair had been dark, now it was colourless. While the pallor of his skin didn't come from age, he looked as if he'd been bleached in moonlight."
This profile has been neglected for a while. Recovering with an Alchemised illustration, my High Reeve boy Kaine Ferron.

one thing i hate about the soc fandom is the amount of people who act like jesper and his father have a healthy relationship; i know a lot of these posts are joke posts but it just irks me so bad.
colm fahey was NOT a good father and he did not have a healthy relationship with his son whatsoever. in fact it's literally stated that the primary cause of jesper's gambling addiction stems from his father because he instilled fear and shame within jepser just for being grisha. even in his childhood, aditi had to teach jesper to use his powers as a fabrikator in secret. a father who fears his son cannot have a healthy relationship with his child because no matter how much he hides it, that fear will always be apparent through his actions.
what primarily makes colm a better father than most is that he's trying, he listened to jesper's outburst and he's trying to remedy his relationship with his son even if it's so late.
This.
Colm Fahey is such a realistic character. Jesper’s father-child dynamic is so realistic. It’s fucked up, he needs therapy, but it’s painful and growing because at the end of the day, Colm tries and cares. Who doesn’t relate to a parental figure anxiously doing something “for your own good” or “for your safety” that really imparts a lot of damage?
I’m so glad she included him. Not a shiny perfect one-note father/authority to balance out figures like Van Eck, Brum, Haskell, Heleen, etc. Just a decent human person. Because I think one of the main arguments the duology makes with all its characters is that trying and caring and working on yourself are the things that make a person good. And that you can—and should—try no matter how many shitty mistakes you’ve made and how much harm you’ve caused. You can always learn to care better.
