Men should not work in women’s prisons.
Men should not work in women’s prisons
Women and girls have to literally deprogram themselves in order to survive as independent adults.
Our childhood constantly and subtly reinforces that we must be passive, pleasant, unassertive, acquiescent, modest, and dependent. Girls are socially punished when they stray outside these ideals, or are too honest and unapologetic about their views, or if they don’t go along with the crowd.
But this is in total opposition to the skills we need in our careers, and in personal relationships. To succeed in your career, you have to develop the skill of saying “no” with confidence (without feeling the need to explain or excuse yourself), you must be able to lead others without apologizing or second-guessing yourself, and you must be your own best advocate. To stay safe in personal relationships, you have to learn to recognize, value, and prioritize your own opinion on what and who is right for you, you have to learn to trust your own instincts, you must be able to say “no” without feeling like you’re being mean or withholding, and you have to be able to communicate your needs openly, honestly, and unapologetically.
Society gives women and girls the burden of undoing what has been done to us, and punishes us if we can’t.
All of this is so, so true. Being obsessively polite and overly concerned with not disappointing anyone didn’t stop me from getting through college. But now that I’m starting work in the real world, I’m wrestling my socialization every damn day.
some thoughts on self objectification
Holy mother of hell
this is a huge reason why lesbians can go years just not figuring out that they aren’t attracted to men. when your whole understanding of attraction is “objectifying yourself to the point that you understand intimacy as a performance to be the perfect sexual object for a man” then the question of who and what you desire isn’t even being asked- let alone answered.

In case you weren’t aware, deaf people swear just as much as the rest of us - they’re just able to do it a little more discreetly. YouTube channel Cut has helped us all join in on the fun by posting a video in which 7 deaf people show how to say all of your favorite curse words in American Sign Language, and it’s so much more fun than just flipping the bird. This is what a real, qualified OBGYN will tell you about what women feel when they get an abortion
Dr. Willie Parker, who is trained as a gynecologist and OBGYN, is a hero for the pro-choice movement because he’s honest about the undiscussed aspects of getting (or not getting) an abortion. Watch how he gives a consultation.
That last statement about regret is so important, because so many people don’t understand what it is or what causes it. Anti-choicers exploit this by manipulating pregnant people and creating doubt, which only increases the likelihood of regret, no matter what decision the pregnant person makes. You know what is best for you, even if it takes some time to figure it out.
