Hi there! An update.
It's been a while, and I hope this note finds you well. I'm doing just fine. Lots has happened since I last checked in. I became an uncle, I lived in another state for most of the last year, I worked on some stuff for Disney that I'm really proud of, and for those who've followed since the Mousetrap days: I've officially dated a face character. I've been noodling on a personal website, which is something I haven't really had before. I've had lots of blogs, but never really a home page. I'm still working on it, but you can check it out at www.adamoco.com. I hope you find it stupid and fun. It's also technically a Tumblr, and I might write there sometimes, so follow me and I'll follow you back, jack. Now I'm going to finish this beer I'm drinking, and hop a train from Anaheim back to Burbank. Catch ya later, skater. --Adam
The last.
I started this Tumblr to write more, and to talk about things I wanted to do when I got older. I picked a list of thirteen things that I wanted to accomplish, some honest, some kind of goofy. Three years later, I have completed none of them. My interest in doing so varies widely by item, between "a lot" and "zero." So by other barometers I got older, but perhaps by this one, I didn't.
I've decided to retire thingsimgoingtodowhenigetolder. As a username, it's long, hard to share, and doesn't fit neatly into my Twitter profile. As a reflection of who I am right now, it's not a good one. Whatever I seek to do "when I get older" should be more aspirational, not a mere to-do list. If I was repicking that list right now, the one item I'd want on it is to be happy. Whatever the means to achieving that is, I'm trying to figure out.
I wrote recently about a depression that's been creeping in over the past couple years, mixed with a good amount of anxiety. I want to assure you of two things: first, retiring this Tumblr doesn't have much to do with that; second, I'm doing OK. Not super, not everything's better, but OK. Some of the challenges I'm facing were a long time in the making. It will take time to overcome them. I'm talking with a therapist every couple weeks now. She's explained some things about how our brains work that clarified things I've been struggling with, identified some feelings and thoughts I was having that I didn't realize I was having, and is helping me break down how I should address all that into some easy, manageable steps. I made a few personal changes that are helping, and I still have others I need to make. I have good days and bad days, but on the whole my outlook has been more positive the last few weeks, and I think I'm making progress. My therapist noted I'm not a weepy, defeated mess anymore when I come in, so that's a pretty good affirmation. It went okay telling my mom I was in therapy. She's been really supportive. I don't want to share that experience here, but I've been writing about all this in a journal, which is a sort of Tumblr that only I can see (mine's even password protected).
So that's all for now. Thanks to the couple of you who've followed me since Mousetrap; I think I've met or know you all in real life now, which is super cool.

Yesterday, I spent 60 dollars on groceries, took the bus home, carried both bags with two good arms back to my studio apartment and cooked myself dinner. You and I may have different definitions of a good day. This week, I paid my rent and my credit card bill, worked 60 hours between my two jobs, only saw the sun on my cigarette breaks and slept like a rock. Flossed in the morning, locked my door, and remembered to buy eggs. My mother is proud of me. It is not the kind of pride she brags about at the golf course. She doesn’t combat topics like, ”My daughter got into Yale” with, ”Oh yeah, my daughter remembered to buy eggs” But she is proud. See, she remembers what came before this. The weeks where I forgot how to use my muscles, how I would stay as silent as a thick fog for weeks. She thought each phone call from an unknown number was the notice of my suicide. These were the bad days. My life was a gift that I wanted to return. My head was a house of leaking faucets and burnt-out lightbulbs. Depression, is a good lover. So attentive; has this innate way of making everything about you. And it is easy to forget that your bedroom is not the world, That the dark shadows your pain casts is not mood-lighting. It is easier to stay in this abusive relationship than fix the problems it has created. Today, I slept in until 10, cleaned every dish I own, fought with the bank, took care of paperwork. You and I might have different definitions of adulthood. I don’t work for salary, I didn’t graduate from college, but I don’t speak for others anymore, and I don’t regret anything I can’t genuinely apologize for. And my mother is proud of me. I burned down a house of depression, I painted over murals of greyscale, and it was hard to rewrite my life into one I wanted to live But today, I want to live. I didn’t salivate over sharp knives, or envy the boy who tossed himself off the Brooklyn bridge. I just cleaned my bathroom, did the laundry, called my brother. Told him, “it was a good day.

To catch you up on current events, the House Republicans are currently lying on the floor, holding their breath, and turning blue, in a last ditch effort to get someone to make the Affordable Care Act (A/K/A Obamacare) go away. What terrifies them is not the idea that the program will fail, but that, in fact, it will succeed. And the thought of working people, children, and the poor having health coverage makes them panicky for some reason.
To that end, the Tea Party noise machine has done everything it can to spread misinformation about the law, prevent it from being implemented, and block the government from providing basic information about how the Affordable Care Act works. This is a familiar tactic from other recent political battles: frantically cut the legs out from under the law at the legislative level, then scream that it obviously doesn’t work, and try to have it eliminated.
Here are the facts the hissy-fit crew don’t want you to know:
If you have insurance, you keep it. Nothing changes.
If you apply for insurance, and you have a preexisting condition, most insurers can no longer deny you coverage.
If you can’t afford insurance, the government will help you pay.
Your insurance coverage, whatever it is - whether it is supplied by your employer, or you go and get it yourself in the new health insurance marketplaces - will help pay for everything from preventative care, to doctor’s visits, to prescriptions. Because working people shouldn’t be one accident or illness away from bankruptcy. This is a simple matter of decency and social fairness. I am confused why anyone thinks otherwise.
Some people worry if they don’t get insurance, they will go to jail. This is a falsehood. However, in 2014, if you do not have health insurance, you have to get some, or pay a fee. And you say: but why do I need health insurance?? I’m not sick and I don’t need medical care! But if you get hit by a drunk driver, you will need care. Or if you slip on the ice. Or if you’re diagnosed with a malignant tumor. Everyone is in the health care market… ill health is an inevitable part of the human existence.
Don’t worry signing up will be hard! Help finding a plan is available.
The ACA means your insurer cannot drop you just because you get sick. It also means insurers cannot set arbitrary limits on how much they will spend on your care each year. Need more care? Get more money.
The ACA protects your choice of doctors, and makes sure your children can stay on your health plan until they’re 26. It guarantees your right to appeal if your insurer tries to dick you out of your fair coverage.
Guess what else? The money you’re spending on insurance? The insurance companies now face an 80/20 requirement, meaning that they have to spend 80% of what they make on health care, not on marketing, or administration, or other happy-crappy. Now they have to do less selling, more doing.
There’s a lot more to learn, if you want - all the facts are right here - but there is no reason to be afraid of the law. The goal is to protect families from the worst: the debilitating illness that wipes them out financially and closes the door to opportunity.
For creative people, the ACA is probably the best thing to happen in decades. I can’t tell you how many comic book creators are one sickness from having everything swept away. The creative class has been one of the great engines of the American economy, and in that way, the Republican attack on the Affordable Care Act is an attack on what America does best: invent and create.

Rather, as EJ Dionne writes, the real fear is that the law will succeed. Once Obamacare begins delivering health insurance to millions of Americans it will become effectively impossible to repeal. That’s what’s happened in every other country that’s introduced a national health-care system. That’s why the right needs to stop Obamacare before it begins. The irony of their strategy, though, is that shutting down the federal government won’t stop Obamacare. It might even help it.”

Yep. I’ve been saying all along that the reason conservatives have been going after the ACA so hard is because they’re afraid of just how successful it will be. Once it’s fully implemented, there will be no going back.

Accurate. A friend of mine just got her insurance quote for the post-Obamacare world. Her monthly premium? $116. Republicans are right to be scared. Once we have universal healthcare (or at least, the privatized American version of it), they won’t be able to take it away from us.
